ABSTRACT

The degree of endogenous intoxication and the activation of lipid peroxidation products (LPO) were studied in patients with enteric parasitoses. The findings suggest that the expression of medium-molecular-weight peptides in relation with the values of LPO is of importance in the pathogenesis of parasitoses.

ABSTRACT

The functional state of a thiol disulfide link of the antioxidant system was evaluated in 322 patients with brucellosis (160 and 162 with its acute and chronic forms, respectively), including the patients with that involving the cardiovascular systems (120 and 92 with acute and chronic forms, respectively). Examination of the blood antioxidant system indicated that in brucellosis patients, cardiovascular involvement was accompanied by a reduction in SH groups and thiol disulfide coefficient and by an increase in the content of SS groups, which indicates the predominance of the oxidant system over antioxidant one. At the same time, the functional insufficiency of the blood antioxidant system was more evident in patients with acute brucellosis.

ABSTRACT

Brucellosis remains a most common disease of animals and humans in cattle-breeding regions of Russia. The cause of unfavourable outcome of brucellosis in a 49 year-old patient was the development of infectious endocarditis (IE). This complication in patients with brucellosis is relatively rare compared with previous years. Hence, probability of its erroneous diagnosis and treatment. Modern diagnostic tools, such as EchoCG makes it possible to avoid mistakes in diagnosis of IE.

ABSTRACT

The plasmid profile of 25 hospital strains of Gram-negative bacteria that are known to be originators of neonatal sepsis was studied by the authors. Of these, E. coli, Enterobacter spp., and Citrobacter spp. proved to be the most frequently seen causative agents in the above health problem, with 13, 5, and 7 strains respectively having been recovered in the studied material. There have been isolated 26 plasmids from the studied 25 bacterial strains. Of these, fifty percent were classified as Citrobacter spp. The molecular mass of the plasmids recovered has been found to vary among 30 and 120.

ABSTRACT

Particular features have been studied of the clinical course of present-day abdominal typhoid caused by Sp. typhi 61-0 polyresistant strains. The clinical analysis performed has shown that Sp. typhi 61-0 polyresistant strain-associated enteric fever runs a moderately severe and severe course. There is an increased frequency of complications such as intestinal hemorrhage, perforated intestine, pneumonia, in the above patients. In the time-related course of the disease, Widal's reaction is not considered to be expedient for use in the diagnosis of Sp. typhi 61-0 strain-associated abdominal fever.

ABSTRACT

The examination of 62 pregnant women with acute viral hepatitis B has established in them inhibition of interferon genesis and the presence of secondary T-cell immunodeficiency. The most pronounced and long-lasting was a fall of gamma-interferon. A simultaneous lowering of alpha-, gamma- and serum interferon was indicative of complicated pregnancy or premorbid condition. A persistent deficient production of gamma-interferon and T lymphocytes, imbalance of their subpopulations promoted long-term course of hepatitis and persistence of HBsAg.

ABSTRACT

The work deals with the results of the study of cell-mediated immunity factors (T and B lymphocytes, 0 lymphocytes, T helpers, T suppressors) and phagocytosis in pregnant women with viral hepatitis B, depending on the duration of pregnancy and the severity of the disease. The authors suggest that the severe course of viral hepatitis B in pregnant women may be regarded as the consequence of secondary immunodeficiency.

ABSTRACT

The first serological survey of the human population of Tajikistan was carried out with the purpose of detection of antibody inhibiting hemagglutination of rubella virus. As a result, in over 2500 persons high intensity of formation of the herd immunity was established. A greater portion of the population (66%) acquired antibody in preschol age. The formation of the immune portion completed by 10--14 years of age. Among women of the child-bearing ages about 8--15% had no antibody to rubella virus. This value in combination with intensive spread of rubella among children indicates that in this republic the epidermiological situation with rubella appears to be unfavourable for adult women.
