ABSTRACT

In this study, the effect of oral ciprofloxacin on the structure of the thoracic aorta in rats was investigated. Twenty four male albino rats were divided into 4 groups (6 rats/group): group I (adult control), group II (adult rats treated with ciprofloxacin), group III (senile control), and group IV (senile rats treated with ciprofloxacin). Rats in groups II and IV received ciprofloxacin via oral gavage in a daily dose of 3.5 mg/kg/d for 14 days, while control rats received equivalent amount of distilled water used to dissolve the drug. After 2 weeks, all rats were sacrificed, thoracic aortae were dissected, and half of the specimens were processed for paraffin sections and examined by light microscopy. The other half of the specimens were prepared for scanning electron microscopy. Sections from rats treated with ciprofloxacin showed evident damaging effect on aortic wall particularly in (group IV). Aortic intima showed, focal desquamation of the lining epithelium. Tunica media exhibited loss of the normal concentric arrangement and degeneration of the smooth muscle cells. Immune staining for alpha smooth muscle actin showed muscle damage. Interestingly, some sections in (group IV) showed out-pouch (aneurysm like) of the aortic wall. There was dense collagen fibers deposition. Scanning electron microscopic observations of (group IV) revealed uneven intima, adherent blood cells and fibrin filaments to damaged intima, and out-pouch formation. It was concluded that oral ciprofloxacin caused deleterious structural changes in the thoracic aortic wall of rats explaining clinical observations of fluoroquinolones induced risk of aortic dissection and aneurysm.

ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many educational institutions followed the blended learning system. Using the participants' opinions, we evaluated the Blackboard (Bb) collaborate platform for online team-based learning (TBL) sessions for undergraduate students from different medical programs in the KSA. The participants were students on the MBBS Program (157 year two and 149 year three), together with 53 students in year one of the Nursing Program, 25 in year two of the Doctor of Pharmacy Program, and 11 in year two of the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program in Fakeeh College for Medical Sciences, (FCMS) KSA. To assess students' recall, engagement, and satisfaction with the sessions, an online TBL plan was designed and reviewed by the Medical Education Department. The students completed an online survey at the end of each session. All responses in this study showed a statistically significant positive difference from the neutral mid-point response (p < 0.05), reflecting high satisfaction. In the MBBS Program, the survey was completed by 40 students in year two and 76 in year three. The mean responses were 4.1 ± 0.3 and 3.9 ± 0.2 respectively (mean ± SD). In the BSN Program, 19 students completed the survey. The mean response was 4.6 ± 0.2. In the Pharm D Program, 10 students completed the survey. The mean response was 4.9 ± 0.12. In the MLS Program, eight students completed the survey. The mean response was 4.8 ± 0.12. It was concluded that online TBL using Bb collaborate is a successful anatomy-learning tool among FCMS students on different programs.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the protective effect of spirulina on corneal injury after formaldehyde (FA) exposure was assessed. Thirty adult male albino rats were divided into four groups. Group I: 12 rats were divided into two subgroups: I-a (negative control) and I-b (positive control). Group II (spirulina group): six rats received spirulina via an oral gavage feeding needle at a daily dose of 400 mg/kg b.w. Group III (FA exposure group): six rats were subjected to 10% FA inhalation for 2 h per day for 2 weeks (5 days per week). Group IV (FA exposure group treated with spirulina): six rats were exposed to 10% FA as in group III, with co-administration of spirulina as in group II. After 2 weeks, all the rats were sacrificed; the corneas were dissected and processed for paraffin sections. The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson's trichrome (MTC), or avidin-biotin peroxidase, and examined by light microscopy. The sections of rat cornea exposed to FA (Group III) showed disorganized and compressed epithelium with erosions. Subepithelial mononuclear cell infiltration and invasion of blood vessels were also evident. Stromal collagen fibers were disorganized and widely separated. All these changes were ameliorated by administration of spirulina (Group IV). Corneal thickness was nearly normal in Group IV, statistically significantly less than in Group III. ABSTRACT

Although the traditional didactic lecture is considered to be efficient for presenting information and providing explanations, it usually does not provide adequate time for deeper learning activities. So, traditional lecture is one of the most widely criticized educational methods. Virtual learning environment (VLE) is a specially designed environment that facilitates teachers' management of educational courses for their students, using computer hardware and software, which involves distance learning. In this study, we evaluated the experiment of online teaching of General Embryology for Egyptian undergraduate medical students using WizIQ learning management system. A total of 100 students were invited to submit an online survey at the end of the course to evaluate delivery of instruction, creation of an environment that supported learning, and administrative issues. Most of the students reported that they were strongly satisfied with the efficacy of the instructional methods and were strongly satisfied with the degree of clarity of the course material. They strongly accepted the page format and design of the virtual classroom and strongly agreed that the learning environment supported the learning procedure. The item of easy logging into the virtual classroom had aberrant variable responses; it recorded the lowest mean response; this variation in responses was due to technical factors as the students used different devices with different speeds of internet connections. Ninety percent of students have strongly recommended the course attendance for their fellow students. These results demonstrate that online Anatomy teaching using learning management systems appears to be a successful additional learning tool among Egyptian medical students.
