ABSTRACT

Analyze the influence of deep-degree burns on the quality of life (QoL) of women at treatment in ambulatory after hospital discharge. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a reference public hospital for burns in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, from August 2017 to May 2018. Fifty adult women over 20 years old who suffered deep burns and were in outpatient rehabilitation treatment were included. The variables studied were biological, sociodemographic, and clinical. The dynamometry and goniometry tests and the instruments to verify the QV Burn-Specific Health Scale-Revised were included in the analysis. Multiple linear regression models were fitted to identify factors associated with the six domains of the QoL instrument. The results identified a greater negative influence of burns on the QoL of women when associated with the variables: dark-black skin color, low levels of education, low income, motion impairment in right upper limb and lesions less than 6 months in the face, head and neck region. It should be noticed that the overall QoL score presented a median of 92.0, a score considered high, revealing an important QoL impairment. Deep-degree burn victims had a great impact on physical, emotional, and psychological abilities, acting harmfully on their self-image and causing difficulties in the execution of their daily and professional life activities, which are reinforced by aspects such as social position, level of education, and extent and duration of injury, resulting in a low QoL.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity of areas that received skin grafts on the upper limbs of burned patients and their perception of how the sensitivity is related to their quality of life. METHODS: Thirty individuals with burns on the upper limbs, treated with grafting, were evaluated. Personal data and history of the injury were obtained. The Vancouver scale was applied to assess the sensitivity of the grafted area and it was measured. The tactile sensitivity was assessed by means of a stoichiometer, whereas the thermal sensitivity was assessed by means of a test tube with water at 40°C, with water at room temperature and ice was applied. Through the use of TENS, in the conventional way and with varying intensity and frequency (VIF), itching sensation and nociceptive sensitivity were evaluated, respectively. Quality of life was assessed using the BSHS-R. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Burns in the upper limbs treated with a skin graft need stimuli of greater intensity to arouse sensations when compared to healthy areas. Thermal sensitivity tends to return faster. Sensitivity changes in the graft area interfere with patients quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Background: The treatment of burns has always been a challenge in terms of their seriousness, as the multiple complications that usually occur in proportion to the time needed to cure the lesion. The therapeutic laser is a monochromatic and coherent light that has been used to induce the healing of wounds indolent. Objectives: The study aims to describe the effects, the mechanism of action and application parameters of therapeutic laser on the healing of burns. Methods: A bibliographic survey was carried out through books and publications indexed journals (MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, CAPES) that address the issue in question. Results: This review shows that the laser therapy accelerates the proliferation of reparative cells and increases the organization of collagen, but there is a lack of studies using burns as an experimental model, lack of standardized criteria and application information on the depth of the lesion. Conclusion: Laser treatment can be a valuable resource in the treatment of burns by its ability to induce rapid healing and organized.
