ABSTRACT

Subjective aspects such as oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and depression are important aspects in the periodontal care. The objectives of the study were to test a predictive model of clinical attachment loss and OHRQoL in a pooled sample of dental patients with periodontitis and mental health patients with depressive symptomatology, and test the invariance of the model across both types of patients. Three self-report scales were applied to assess depression, OHRQoL and oral hygiene habits, saliva samples were collected for three proinflammatory biomarkers, and the clinical attachment loss was measured in 35 patients with periodontitis and 26 patients with depressive symptomatology. Data were analyzed through structural equation modeling. The one-group analysis revealed a psychosomatic complaint model of disagreement between the complaint and the clinically observable. In the multi-group analysis, the model was not invariant. It was necessary to introduce a singularity in relation to depressive symptomatology for each population. Thus, a good and equivalent fit was achieved between the six nested models in constraints, as well as equivalent parameters between both types of patients. The study of a dental population in conjunction with a mental health population with a psychosomatic risk factor reveals interesting and unexpected results.

ABSTRACT

Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease, characterized by the presence of hyposalivation and xerophthalmia, which in addition to other factors is diagnosed by the presence of rheumatoid factor in blood. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the presence of rheumatoid factor (IgG-IgM) in the saliva of patients with primary and secondary Sjögren's syndrome. Materials and methods: Forty samples from patients with primary and secondary Sjögren's syndrome previously diagnosed by the Arthritis and Rheumatism Specialist Center of the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon were analyzed. Samples were taken from the saliva using the Carlson-Crittenden device to evaluate the IgG-IgM immunocomplex using the ELISA method. Results: No significant difference was found between the presence of IgM in primary (0.099±0.016) and secondary Sjögren syndrome (0.098±0.017), however, a high presence of IgG was found in the group of patients with secondary Sjögren's syndrome (0.134±0.054). Conclusion: The search for diagnostic tools using salivary biomarkers has come with economic and clinical advantages, however, in the present study no significant changes were found in salivary rheumatoid factor between both groups.


El síndrome de Sjögren es una enfermedad autoinmune crónica, caracterizada por la presencia de hiposalivación y xeroftalmia, la cual además de otros factores es diagnosticada por la presencia del factor reumatoide en sangre. El objetivo del presente estudio es evaluar la presencia del factor reumatoide (IgG-IgM) en saliva parotídea de pacientes con síndrome de Sjögren primario y secundario. Materiales y métodos: Se analizaron 40 muestras de pacientes con síndrome de Sjögren primario y secundario previamente diagnosticados por el Centro de Especialistas en Artritis y Reumatismo de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, a los cuales se les tomó una muestra de saliva parotídea mediante el dispositivo Carlson-Crittenden para evaluar mediante el método ELISA el inmunocomplejo IgG-IgM. Resultados: No se encontró diferencia significativa entre la presencia de IgM en el síndrome de Sjögren primario (0.099±0.016) y secundario (0,098±0,017), sin embargo en cuanto a la presencia de la IgG se encontró elevada en el grupo de pacientes con síndrome de Sjögren secundario (0,134±0,054). Conclusión: La búsqueda de herramientas diagnósticas mediante biomarcadores salivales ha traído consigo ventajas económicas y clínicas, sin embargo en el presente estudio no se encontró un cambio significativo en el factor reumatoide salival entre ambos grupos.

ABSTRACT

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are well known for their beneficial effects on human health in the intestine and immune system; however, there are few studies on the impact they can generate in oral health. The aim of this study was to test and compare in vitro antimicrobial activity of L. reuteri on pathogenic bacteria involved in the formation of dental caries: S. mutans, S. gordonii, and periodontal disease: A. naeslundii and T. forsythia. Also, we determined the growth kinetics of each bacterium involved in this study. Before determining the antimicrobial action of L. reuteri on cariogenic bacteria and periodontal disease, the behavior and cell development time of each pathogenic bacterium were studied. Once the conditions for good cell growth of each of selected pathogens were established according to their metabolic requirements, maximum exponential growth was determined, this being the reference point for analyzing the development or inhibition by LAB using the Kirby Bauer method. Chlorhexidine 0.12% was positive control. L. reuteri was shown to have an inhibitory effect against S. mutans, followed by T. forsythia and S. gordonii, and a less significant effect against A. naeslundii. Regarding the effect shown by L. reuteri on the two major pathogens, we consider its potential use as a possible functional food in the prevention or treatment of oral diseases.

ABSTRACT

In this review we cover the biological control of insects, bacteria and fungus that affect different crops. Using different microorganism as bacteria viruses and fungus can do the biological control of these important problems. In this work we describe with detail the mode of action of the different microorganisms used to control insects and plant diseases. We also present novel strategies to improve the efficiency of these microorganisms against their targets and we present the development and production of several formulations to be used in the fields for the biological control of some plant problems.
