ABSTRACT

Among the most studied semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), WS2 showed several advantages in comparison to their counterparts, such as a higher quantum yield, which is an important feature for quantum emission and lasing purposes. We studied transferred monolayers of WS2 on a drilled Si3N4 substrate in order to have insights about on how such heterostructure behaves from the Raman and photoluminescence (PL) measurements point of view. Our experimental findings showed that the Si3N4 substrate influences the optical properties of single-layer WS2. Beyond that, seeking to shed light on the causes of the PL quenching observed experimentally, we developed density functional theory (DFT) based calculations to study the thermodynamic stability of the heterojunction through quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations as well as the electronic alignment of the energy levels in both materials. Our analysis showed that along with strain, a charge transfer mechanism plays an important role for the PL decrease.

ABSTRACT

The knowledge of the phonon coherence length is of great importance for two-dimensional-based materials since phonons can limit the lifetime of charge carriers and heat dissipation. Here we use tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) to measure the spatial correlation length Lc of the A1g1 and A1g2 phonons of monolayer and few-layer gallium sulfide (GaS). The differences in Lc values are responsible for different enhancements of the A1g modes, with A1g1 always enhancing more than the A1g2, independently of the number of GaS layers. For five layers, the results show an Lc of 64 and 47 nm for A1g1 and A1g2, respectively, and the coherence lengths decrease when decreasing the number of layers, indicating that scattering with the surface roughness plays an important role.

ABSTRACT

Occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been reported among patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Our aim was to evaluate the presence of occult HBV infection in patients with HCV-related liver cirrhosis (LC) with or without HCC in São Paulo, Brazil. Serum and liver tissue samples from 50 hepatitis B surface antigen-negative patients with HCV-related LC who underwent liver transplantation at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine Hospital from 1993 to 2004 were divided into groups with LC only (N = 33) and with LC plus HCC (N = 17). HBV DNA was assayed for serum and paraffin-embedded liver tissue (tumoral and non-tumoral) using real time PCR and only 1 case with HCC had HBV DNA-positive serum. All liver samples were negative. HCV genotype 3 was detected in 17/39 (43.7 percent) cases. In conclusion, using a sensitive real time PCR directed to detect HBV variants circulating in Brazil, occult hepatitis B infection was not found among HCV-positive cirrhotic patients and was rarely found among HCV-positive HCC patients. These results are probably related to the low prevalence of HBV infection in our population. Furthermore, we have also shown that HCV genotype 3 is frequently found in Brazilian cirrhotic patients, particularly when they also have HCC. More studies involving a large number of cases should be carried out to confirm these data and to further characterize Brazilian HCV genotype isolates to elucidate genetic features that might be related to its carcinogenic potential.
