ABSTRACT

Background Antibiotic resistance is a critical global health concern, intensified by public misconceptions and inconsistent antibiotic use. Misunderstandings about antibiotics and their improper use contribute to the acceleration of resistance, making it harder to treat infections effectively. Previous research has identified knowledge gaps in the public, yet there is limited understanding of how these gaps translate into attitudes and practices across different demographic groups. This study aimed to assess the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antibiotic resistance among various demographic groups and to determine the influence of demographic factors on these variables. Methods A descriptive study was conducted using a structured online questionnaire distributed through social media and health forums. The questionnaire targeted adults aged 18 years and older from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 (Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) for descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression analysis. Results The study included responses from 1,561 participants, revealing that 75.72% had knowledge of antibiotic resistance, but only 68.23% understood its public health implications. Attitudes toward antibiotic use were generally positive, with 90.14% recognizing the importance of completing antibiotic courses. However, 32.16% admitted they would stop taking antibiotics once feeling better, even if the course was not finished, highlighting a significant gap between knowledge and practice. Regression analysis identified awareness of prevention measures (coefficient=2.06) and knowledge of antibiotic resistance (coefficient=1.38) as strong predictors of awareness. The chi-square test showed a significant association between gender and awareness of prevention measures (chi-square value=15.19, p-value=0.000097). Conclusions Despite a high level of knowledge about antibiotic resistance, gaps in attitudes and practices persist. These findings underscore the necessity for tailored educational campaigns that not only inform but also engage and alter behaviors across all demographic groups to combat antibiotic resistance effectively.

ABSTRACT

Background The significance of vitamins in maintaining health necessitates a comprehensive understanding among the population, which is critical for making informed decisions pertaining to diet and vitamin supplementation. Nevertheless, there is a notable deficiency in research regarding the mechanisms through which individuals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) acquire and utilize vitamin-related knowledge, marking a considerable void in public health and nutrition education. Methods This study proposes a quantitative, cross-sectional analysis to evaluate vitamin literacy and information-seeking behaviors within KSA's diverse demographic sectors. Survey instruments will be utilized to ascertain the primary sources from which individuals derive vitamin information and to analyze the factors that influence the integration of this knowledge into daily health practices. Results Analysis showed significant variance in vitamin literacy with age and education acting as key differentiators. Kruskal-Wallis tests indicated significant differences in self-rated vitamin knowledge across age groups (p < 0.001), and Chi-square tests confirmed the association between education level and supplement use (p = 0.0022). The majority of participants demonstrated moderate knowledge of vitamins, yet a discrepancy exists between this knowledge and dietary application. Trust in information sources emerged as a significant predictor of dietary change (Chi-square, p < 0.001), although a substantial portion of participants did not actively incorporate vitamin knowledge into their daily diet. Conclusion The enhancement of vitamin literacy is paramount for the formulation of effective public health strategies. Our findings suggest that targeted educational programs, especially for younger and less-educated populations, are crucial to bridge the gap between vitamin knowledge and its application in daily diet. In addition, efforts should focus on improving the credibility of information sources, as this significantly influences dietary changes. These initiatives can lead to more informed decision-making regarding diet and vitamin supplementation, ultimately fostering healthier living practices and reducing the occurrences of vitamin-related health issues within the KSA populace. This research contributes substantively to the development of tailored educational initiatives and informed policymaking, guiding future efforts to advance nutrition guidelines and public health in the region.

ChatGPT, with its advanced natural language processing capabilities, leads the way in providing personalized mental health support and improving chronic condition management. Gemini Advanced extends the boundary of AI in healthcare through data analytics, facilitating early disease detection and supporting medical decision-making. Co-pilot, by integrating seamlessly with healthcare systems, optimizes clinical workflows and encourages a culture of innovation among healthcare professionals. Additionally, the review highlights the significant contributions of AI in accelerating medical research, particularly in genomics and drug discovery, thus paving the path for personalized medicine and more effective treatments. The pivotal role of AI in epidemiology, especially in managing infectious diseases such as COVID-19, is also emphasized, demonstrating its value in enhancing public health strategies. However, the integration of AI technologies in healthcare comes with challenges. Concerns about data privacy, security, and the need for comprehensive cybersecurity measures are discussed, along with the importance of regulatory compliance and transparent consent management to uphold ethical standards and patient autonomy. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Medication errors significantly impact patient safety and healthcare costs. This study investigates the influence of interprofessional communication on medication error rates, with a focus on identifying actionable strategies to improve communication efficacy among healthcare professionals. METHODS: Utilizing a quantitative approach, this research distributed a detailed online questionnaire to a broad cohort of healthcare workers in various settings within Saudi Arabia. The survey encompassed sections on demographics, the frequency and quality of interprofessional communication, perceived barriers and facilitators to effective communication, and personal experiences with medication errors. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS to derive descriptive and inferential statistics, alongside thematic analysis for qualitative responses. RESULTS: The survey attracted 1165 respondents, predominantly aged 20-30 (68.58%) and female (65.49%). Pharmacists constituted the largest professional group (40.34%). We identified a notable positive correlation (r = 0.16) between high-quality interprofessional communication and employment in hospital environments or having 5-20 years of experience. In contrast, negative correlations were observed with employment in non-traditional healthcare settings (r = -0.19) and professionals with less than five years of experience (r = -0.13), indicating communication challenges. The analysis also highlighted a concerning frequency of prescription and dispensing errors, with 52.70% of participants reporting prescription errors as the most common issue encountered. CONCLUSION: Effective interprofessional communication is pivotal in mitigating medication errors within healthcare settings. The study illuminates specific areas for improvement, including the need for targeted communication training, particularly for less experienced professionals and those in non-traditional settings. Enhancing communication channels and fostering an environment conducive to open, interdisciplinary dialogue are essential steps towards advancing patient safety and reducing medication errors.

ABSTRACT

Introduction Teledentistry has emerged as a promising solution to enhance dental healthcare accessibility and quality. Understanding public awareness and attitudes toward teledentistry is crucial for its successful implementation, especially in regions like Saudi Arabia where digital health initiatives are rapidly expanding. This study aims to assess the level of awareness, attitudes, and perceptions toward teledentistry among the Saudi Arabian population, as well as examine the demographic factors influencing its acceptance. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 474 participants, employing a structured questionnaire to collect data on demographics, awareness, knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes toward teledentistry. Statistical analyses, including correlation and chi-square tests, were performed to analyze the data. Results The majority of respondents (64%) reported awareness of teledentistry, primarily through the Internet (44.5%) and healthcare providers (36.3%). The average self-assessed knowledge score was 3.04 out of 5, indicating moderate familiarity with teledentistry concepts. Attitudes toward teledentistry were generally positive, with 54% expressing belief in its effectiveness. However, a significant portion of the sample showed reluctance toward using teledentistry for routine dental check-ups, with only 45.1% showing willingness. High technological accessibility was reported, yet 55.9% of participants preferred traditional in-person consultations. Correlation analysis revealed a moderate positive relationship between knowledge and belief in effectiveness (r = 0.21), but a negligible correlation with willingness to use teledentistry (r = 0.016). A strong positive correlation was found between belief in effectiveness and willingness for routine check-ups (r = 0.673). Educational level significantly influenced teledentistry acceptance, with higher education correlating with greater receptiveness. Conclusion While there is a moderate level of awareness and a generally positive attitude toward teledentistry among the Saudi population, hesitance remains regarding its use for routine care. The findings highlight the need for educational initiatives to improve knowledge and perceptions of teledentistry, potentially enhancing its acceptance and integration into the healthcare system.

In the digital era, the seamless integration of electronic medical records (EMR) stands as a pivotal milestone in transforming healthcare delivery, with Saudi Arabia at the forefront of this revolution in the Middle East. This literature review comprehensively explores the challenges and opportunities associated with adopting EMR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in alignment with the nation's Vision 2030 healthcare objectives. The review synthesizes research from various scholarly sources, utilizing databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and regional databases, and focuses on literature published between 2010 and 2023. Our methodology included a strategic combination of keywords and a stringent selection criterion to ensure a focus on relevant EMR adoption studies within KSA. The review addresses key aspects of EMR adoption, including technical challenges, financial constraints, human factors, cultural and organizational barriers, privacy and security concerns, and policy and regulatory challenges. It also explores the integration of EMR with other digital health initiatives like telehealth, personal health records, and community pharmacy services. The findings reveal a complex interplay of factors influencing EMR adoption, highlighting the need for comprehensive strategies that address technical, financial, cultural, and policy-related barriers. The review concludes that while significant challenges exist, strategic approaches and solutions tailored to the specific context of Saudi Arabia can effectively facilitate EMR integration, thereby enhancing healthcare quality and efficiency in line with the nation's Vision 2030 goals.

ABSTRACT

Health and higher education ministries in Saudi Arabia recognize the need for a highly qualified workforce specializing in health informatics and information management (HIIM). Therefore, KSA colleges and universities offer HIIM programs, health information systems, and health information technology. It is critical to investigate the HIIM professions and education in Hail City due to differences in these educational programs. This study examined HIIM professions and education in Hail City, Saudi Arabia, and provided strategies and recommendations. Based on a qualitative research approach, we interviewed 39 academicians, health informaticians, and other stakeholders in Hail City. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) framework was used to explore HIIM status and make recommendations. According to participants, HIIM Saudi professionals in Hail City have been growing and motivated, as have the university's undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Informants indicated several weaknesses, but many opportunities were found, including Saudi Vision 2030 and a new HIIM faculty at the University of Hail. According to our findings, relevant specialties control HIIM leadership while unspecialized academicians provide instruction. The extraordinary transmission of digital health in Saudi Arabia promises to enhance HIIM professions and education strengths and opportunities and reduce their weaknesses and threats.

ABSTRACT

Introduction In the evolving landscape of healthcare, the emergence of digital technologies has brought digital health literacy to the forefront. This is especially pertinent given the vast amount of health information available online and the diverse capabilities of individuals to effectively use this resource. Focusing on the Saudi Arabian context, where digital health practices are increasingly integrated into daily life, our study aims to investigate the competencies in digital health literacy and the patterns of online health information seeking among the Saudi population. Methods A quantitative research design was adopted for this investigation. Data were collected through online surveys from a diverse cohort of 2,184 Saudi residents, all above the age of 18 years. The survey was designed to evaluate the participants' ability to find, understand, and use health information obtained from digital platforms. Results Analysis indicates that 63% of the population is proficient in using search engines for health information. However, 37% face challenges in formulating precise health-related inquiries. Additionally, the study identified significant variations in digital health literacy across different genders and age groups, with younger participants generally showing higher literacy levels. Conclusion The results of our study highlight the critical need for specialized educational initiatives in Saudi Arabia aimed at bolstering digital health literacy. This is particularly essential in bridging the gaps observed in different age groups and between genders. By enhancing these key competencies, we can significantly empower individuals to make well-informed health decisions. Such advancements are instrumental in nurturing a society that is both more informed and proficient in managing health-related information in a digital context.

Self-medication, the unsupervised use of drugs, is a common global behavior with potential adverse health outcomes. This study explores the prevalence and patterns of self-medication in Saudi Arabia, focusing on factors such as drug availability, economic constraints, and public trust in healthcare systems. Particular emphasis is placed on self-medication with antibiotics and prescription drugs due to their significant public health risks. Our comprehensive, quantitative, cross-sectional study surveyed 1,671 individuals across Saudi Arabia's diverse regions. We found that 75.5% of respondents engaged in self-medication, primarily on an occasional basis. While 59.8% of participants perceived self-medication as safe, 17.5% reported experiencing adverse effects. Respondents strongly advocated for increased regulatory measures (87.7%) and a pressing need for enhanced public education (92.6%) to address the associated risks. The study highlights the widespread practice of self-medication in Saudi Arabia, influenced by various factors, and underscores the need for targeted health policies and educational campaigns to mitigate these risks.

ABSTRACT

Introduction The integration of technology in pharmacy education has led to significant changes, making it essential to examine its impact on student learning outcomes. With the rise of emerging technologies, such as game-based learning and augmented reality, new pedagogical approaches have been introduced. However, these technologies also bring challenges that necessitate well-thought-out responses from educational institutions, especially considering the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on learning formats. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with pharmacy students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, utilizing stratified random sampling for data collection. The study employed a validated questionnaire to gather information on students' use of technology, their preferences, and their perceived learning outcomes. The analysis was carried out using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS, version 29) (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Armonk, NY), ensuring adherence to the ethical standards set by the institutional review board. Results The study, involving 508 pharmacy students from Saudi Arabia, revealed that a significant majority regularly use technology in their education, particularly online learning management systems and virtual labs, indicating a shift toward more accessible and efficient learning methods. A notable portion of the students acknowledged the beneficial impact of technology on their learning, with 86.3% reporting improved knowledge retention, 92% noting enhanced skills, and 87.1% observing better academic performance. However, the study also uncovered challenges, with about half of the students facing issues mainly related to distractions while finding technological complexity less problematic. The support from educational institutions in addressing these issues was found to be moderate. These findings underscore the crucial role of technology in enhancing pharmacy education while highlighting the need for more comprehensive institutional support and strategic planning to address the challenges faced by students. Conclusions Technology plays a vital role in the modernization of pharmacy education, significantly aiding in knowledge retention, skill development, and academic performance. Despite the widespread use of technology, the varied experiences and challenges encountered by students underscore the need for increased institutional support and strategic planning. Education must adapt alongside technological advancements to cater to the diverse needs of learners, highlighting the importance of further research into the long-term effects and optimal strategies for technology integration in pharmacy education.
