ABSTRACT

Background: The internet serves as a vital health information resource, yet the quality of data on specific health conditions, especially in Arabic, is often overlooked. This research assesses the quality of Arabic online information about cleft lip and palate (CLP) and proposes avenues for enhancement. Methods: From July to August 2022, a systematic evaluation of Arabic articles on CLP was performed using the DISCERN tool for quality assessment. Searches on Google and Bing resulted in 119 articles that met the study's criteria. Results: The quality of available Arabic information on CLP displayed substantial gaps. Commercial sources dominated (49.6%), followed by private (32.8%) and nonprofit entities (17.6%). The average DISCERN score was 2.26 of 5 (SD = 1.06), indicating the need for enhanced content, particularly concerning treatment risks. Conclusions: The study underscores the subpar quality of Arabic CLP information online, which might mislead patients and impede access to accurate advice. Nonprofit organizations should bolster their online footprint, offering refined health content. A deep dive into DISCERN scores reveals pinpointed improvement areas. Clinicians should direct patients and their families to reliable information sources. Addressing these gaps promises improved CLP knowledge in Arabic, fostering superior patient education and outcomes for those with this condition.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused a global pandemic with long-lasting economic and cultural impacts. International governments have attempted to scale up vaccine production to mitigate this crisis. However, vaccine hesitancy, particularly among healthcare providers, remains an understudied subject that may hinder vaccine effectiveness. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study to evaluate vaccine hesitancy among medical students using a pre-validated survey based on the 5C model of psychological antecedents, which includes confidence, complacency, constraints, calculation, and collective responsibility. RESULTS: The majority of medical students had high scores for confidence (79.7%), non-complacency (88%), and not having constraints against receiving the COVID-19 vaccine (97.4%). Surprisingly, students had low scores for calculation (38%) and collective responsibility (14.7%). Many predictors of the psychological antecedents included in the 5C model have been reported, including academic year and gender. CONCLUSION: We observed moderate levels of vaccine hesitancy among the medical students included in our study. We urge medical students to be more aware of community public health concerns. We recommend that authorized institutions lay out urgent reforms to increase awareness of COVID-19 and available vaccines.

ABSTRACT

Natural killer cell deficiency (NKD) occurs when decreased levels of such cells lead to major immunological deficiency in the patient. NK cells participate in tumor cell surveillance, viral infections, and immunoregulation in the body. We report a case of a nine-year-old female child, a known case of neuroblastoma amplified sequence (NBAS) gene mutation in the variant c.2819A>C (p. His940Pro), which causes infantile liver failure syndrome type 2 (ILFS2). The patient had been treated at four years of age for a three-day history of vesicular skin rashes in the L2 dermatome of the left leg, with pain and without swelling or redness, ear discharge, low appetite, and decreased activity. Also, she had already had multiple admissions due to different types of infections like viral hepatitis, urinary tract infection, Salmonella bacteremia, gastroenteritis, recurrent hepatitis, follicular tonsilitis, pneumonia, mastoiditis, and varicella-zoster infection. Flow cytometry revealed low levels of CD56+ and CD16+ (2%). Recently, she has shown improvement by gaining weight and appetite following interferon-beta 1a injection.
