ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure used to address knee conditions, including osteoarthritis, that cause persistent pain and impaired joint function. While total knee arthroplasty is effective, misconceptions and knowledge gaps exist among the general public, particularly in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, utilized an online survey to assess public perception of total knee arthroplasty. A questionnaire was developed, validated, and administered to participants aged 18 and above with a history of chronic knee pain. Data were analyzed for associations between knowledge and perception scores and sociodemographic factors. RESULTS: Out of 704 participants, the majority exhibited poor knowledge (74.1%) of total knee arthroplasty. Factors influencing knowledge included age, education, income, knowing someone who had total knee arthroplasty, hearing about total knee arthroplasty, receiving total knee arthroplasty information, and awareness of total knee arthroplasty indications. Sociodemographic characteristics such as gender, marital status, and perceptions about total knee arthroplasty prevalence did not significantly impact knowledge scores. CONCLUSION: This study reveals a significant knowledge and perception gap among the public in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, regarding total knee arthroplasty. Tailored education initiatives for patients with chronic knee pain are urgently needed to dispel misconceptions and provide accurate information about total knee arthroplasty. Collaborative efforts between policymakers, healthcare providers, and public health authorities are essential for improving public understanding, enhancing healthcare decision-making, and reducing the burden on healthcare systems.

ABSTRACT

Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis worldwide and is characterized by the gradual loss of joint cartilage, leading to stiffness, discomfort, and restricted movement. This research aims to assess the knowledge of obese women in the Aseer region regarding OA and its associated risk factors. OA predominantly affects the knees, hands, and hips, with knee OA being particularly significant due to its high incidence rate and early onset in obese women. In Saudi Arabia, there are varying levels of awareness among the population, but no study has focused on obese females. This study seeks to address this gap and enhance the understanding of OA in this demographic. Methodology A cross-sectional research design was employed using a self-administrated questionnaire collected by a group of trained data collectors who distributed the questionnaires throughout the clinics of Aseer central hospital. The questionnaire was divided into two sections. The first section collected demographic data about the participants, and the second section was a 20-item questionnaire about OA and its related risk factors. The study was conducted in the Aseer region. A total of 278 subjects (female) were included in the study. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 27.0.1.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results This study analyzed the sociodemographic characteristics of 278 participants. All participants were female, were young to middle-aged adults, and had a collegiate education. On average, participants were overweight, with varying knowledge levels about OA. While some correctly identified symptoms and risk factors. Many participants responded with "I Don't Know" regarding joint stiffness as a symptom (37.7%). Comparing knowledge among different body mass index groups revealed no significant differences, except for misconceptions about the cause of OA among overweight individuals (39.06%). Conclusions This study's findings underscore the practical implications for patient education and healthcare strategies. The varying levels of awareness among obese women in the Aseer region regarding OA emphasize the need for increased education and targeted health promotion interventions. Addressing misconceptions and improving knowledge can enhance treatment plans and contribute to better patient outcomes. Understanding these knowledge gaps is crucial for improving patient education, healthcare strategies, and OA management.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The goal of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance of 5 heat-treated nickel-titanium files in reciprocating movement with the same tip size and different cross sections. METHODS: Five groups (WaveOne [Dentsply, Ballaigues, Switzerland], WaveOne GOLD [Dentsply], RECIPROC [VDW, Munich, Germany], RECIPROC BLUE [VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany], and TF [Sybron Endo, Glendora, CA] Adaptive) of 24 files each of the rotary files were examined. Cyclic fatigue resistance was compared between groups by determining the time needed to fracture and the number of cycles to failure in a cyclic fatigue testing device with 2 different curvatures, the first with a 5-mm radius of curvature and a 60° angle and the second with a double curvature, coronal curvature of 60° angle and a radius of 5 mm, and an apical curvature of 70° angle and a 2-mm radius. Scanning electron microscopic evaluation was performed at the fracture sites to investigate the types of fracture. RESULTS: RECIPROC BLUE group had a higher mean time to fracture followed by RECIPROC and WaveOne GOLD for both single and double curvature. WaveOne had a higher mean time to fracture in a single curvature canal than TF Adaptive, whereas the opposite was true for a double curvature canal. Both RECIPROC groups were significantly greater in cyclic fatigue resistance in comparison with all other groups (P < .05). WaveOne GOLD was significantly greater than the WaveOne and TF Adaptive groups (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: RECIPROC BLUE files exhibited significantly greater cyclic fatigue resistance compared with other files tested in an S-shaped artificial canal.
