ABSTRACT

Characterization of the profile of goat and sheep production in Sergipe enables better understanding of the main barriers linked to low productivity, generating important information for the development of this sector. The objective was to identify and characterize the production of goats and sheep in Sergipe. From 2011 to 2014, 41 goat properties and 60 sheep properties were analyzed, located in 25 municipalities in the three mesoregions of the State (Leste, Agreste, and Sertão). The information was obtained through application of a structured questionnaire to the farmers addressing topics such as: characterization of the property, herd, facilities, sanitary, nutritional, and reproductive management, and socioeconomic aspects of the farmer.  The results demonstrated that 58.5% (24/41) of goat farms had an area less than 30 hectares (ha), reared predominantly mixed breed animals (SRD), with low use of technologies, aiming at family consumption, and complementing income through local marketing. On the sheep properties, 58.3% (35/60) were over 100 ha and used for the production of Santa Inês sheep and crossbreeds together with cattle. Significant flaws were also observed in feed, sanitary, and reproductive management, emphasizing the non-use of preserved foods and forages typical of the region, factors that contribute to the low level of productivity and ustainability of production in a viable and homogeneous manner. The findings led to the conclusion that more organized production is necessary, mainly through investment in technologies and qualified and continuous rural extension, aiming at improving the production, productivity, income, and quality of life of the breeders.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Ophthalmic disorders have become increasingly frequent in the clinical practice of large animals, epithelial defects are frequent and they also present some risk in the daily ophthalmologic clinic. The dermoid, the presence of cutaneous tissue, consisting of the dermis, epidermis, hair follicles and ectopic hairs, originates during the embryonic period of the animal and in ruminants. Its etiological mechanism involved in the pathogenesis is not yet sufficiently elucidated. As treatment, surgical excision is used, however, post surgical treatment with antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapies are necessary. Used as a substitute for antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops, autologous serum (SA) has gained more and more space in substitution to alternative treatments. A 10 months of age calf, resenting a protuberance of ectopic tissue in the periocular region, was addimited in the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural Semi-Arid Federal University (HOVET /UFERSA). The procedure for the removal of the dermoid was performed at the surgical center of HOVET and as a post surgical treatment to elucidate the autologous serum activity in the bacterial control, the use of 1 drop of autologous serum was recommended four times a day during 30 days. Treatment with 100% autologous serum was shown to be an efficient bactericidal agent in post-surgical treatment.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Over the years, the national sheep industry obtained an increase in its population, even with the climatic adversities such as drought that consequently cause a shortage of food, thereby increasing the intoxications by toxic plants. Each year the discovery of toxic plants is increasing, having a great importance in veterinary medicine, for the diagnosis of certain disorders that may come to affect the equines, cattle, sheep and goats. The present work reports the poisoning by Tephrosia cinérea in a sheep, with the purported diagnosis, treatment to recovery of the animal.

ABSTRACT

The navicular syndrome is a high relevance pathology. It is one of the chronic disease that most attacks equines 4 to 15 years. Several factors as faulty genetic predisposition in the blood circulation for the region of the navicular, biomechanical factors, imperfect resignation and instability of the hoof are proposed like as etiological actors. The aim of this study was report a case of navicular bone syndrome in equine and bring forward the discussed therapeutic conducts. In the physical exam, the animal presented accented claudication on step and the illness was diagnosed through the x-ray and from there, neurectomia was carried out. After the surgical treatment, the animal was treated and discharged for not demonstrating painful signs. There is no remedial treatment for the illness, therefore when the first clinical signs appear, it must be taken the proper steps so does not compromising the life of the animal.
