ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between the mandibular foramen (MF) and the inferior occlusal plane (IOP) of anatomic specimens, in order to guide clinicians in the inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB). METHOD: Eighty-two dry mandibles (totally or partially toothed) of Brazilian adults were selected, totalizing 66 left and 66 right antimeres. A flat plate of rigid PVC plastic was placed on the occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth and pressure was then manually applied to simulate the IOP. Following, the perpendicular distance from the IOP to the lowest point of the MF was measured by the use of a digital caliper, adopting negative values inferiorly and positive values superiorly. RESULTS: Regarding the antimeres, the majority of the lowest limits of the MF was below the IOP (right: 86.4%, left: 81.8%) with a mean of -4.2mm (±4.8) in the right and -4.1mm (±4.8) in the left ones, without any statistical significance. Considering both sexes, no statistically significant difference was obtained between them. CONCLUSION: The IOP seems not to be a good anatomical landmark to localize the MF and, its turn, to guide clinicians during the IANB for Brazilian adults, given the marked topographic variations.

ABSTRACT

During beer production, the mashing process is fundamental for extraction of the main sugars from the starch. The quantification of these fermentable sugars during the process provides a measure of the alcoholic content of the final beer. Therefore, monitoring of the sugar composition during beer production is very important for obtaining a quality product. This paper demonstrates the potential of white light interferometry (WLI) for monitoring the extraction of sugars in different mashing processes, by observing the refractive index of the mixture. All the mashings presented linear increases of the refractive index during the temperature steps, which were influenced by the concentrations of sugars produced in each step. Cauchy parameters obtained by refractive index interpretation showed the influence of carbohydrates on absorption in the infrared region, and amino acids on absorption in the ultraviolet region. Strong correlation was obtained between the refractive index and °Bx values, indicating that the WLI technique is a potential analytical method for monitoring the mashing process during beer production.

RESUMO Os fitoterápicos à base de leite de janaguba (Himatanthus drasticus (Mart.) Plumel), usados para o tratamento de câncer, úlcera gástrica e outras doenças, são muito vendidos em mercados públicos de Fortaleza (CE). No entanto, registros mencionam que é comum a troca deste leite por látex de mangabeira (Hancornia speciosa Gomes). O trabalho objetivou avaliar a qualidade físico-química, química e microbiológica de amostras comerciais do leite de janaguba. Dez amostras comerciais foram adquiridas de um mercado de Fortaleza; quatro amostras autênticas de látex de janaguba foram obtidas da chapada do Araripe e uma amostra de látex de mangabeira foi obtida em Paracuru (CE). Foram determinados o aspecto geral, densidade, pH, resíduo seco, volume de sedimentação, perfil cromatográfico e qualidade microbiológica das amostras. Os resultados mostraram elevada contaminação microbiológica nas preparações comerciais e adulteração em seis destas amostras, o que aponta a urgente implantação de uma efetiva farmacovigilância dos fitoterápicos a fim de tornar seu consumo mais seguro e racional.


ABSTRACT The herbal medicines made from janaguba milk (Himatanthus drasticus (Mart.) Plumel), used to treat gastric ulcer, cancer and other diseases, and arewidely sold in the public markets of Fortaleza (CE). However, records mention that it is common to make fake copies of the milk by using mango tree latex (Hanconia speciosa Gomes). This study aimed to evaluate the chemical, physical-chemical and microbiological quality of commercial samples of janaguba milk. Ten commercial samples were purchased from a Fortaleza market; four authentic samples of janaguba latex were obtained from the Araripe plateau, and one mango tree latex sample was obtained in Paracuru (CE). We determined the general appearance, density, pH, dry residue, sedimentation volume, chromatographic profile and microbiological qualities. Results showed high microbiological contamination in the commercial preparations and evidence of tampering in six of these samples, which indicates the need for an urgent implementation of an effective pharmacovigilance strategy for herbal medicines in order to make its consumption more secure and rational.

ABSTRACT

This study details 13 novel polymorphic microsatellite loci in the armoured catfish Hypostomus ancistroides, and assesses their utility for population genetic studies. The analysis of 30 individuals revealed a total of 99 different alleles (ranging from two to 15 alleles per locus), with an average of 7·62 alleles per locus, with observed and expected heterozygosities ranging from 0·103 to 0·931 and from 0·102 to 0·906, respectively. One of the 13 loci showed significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, probably due to the presence of null alleles, inferred from the excess of homozygotes.

ABSTRACT

Quantifying and classifying ichthyoplankton is one of the most effective ways of monitoring the recruitment process in fishes. However, correctly identifying the fish based on morphological characters is extremely difficult, especially in the early stages of development. We examined ichthyoplankton from tributaries and reservoirs along the middle stretch of the Paranapanema River, one of the areas most impacted by hydroelectric projects in the Neotropics. Matching DNA sequences of the COI gene (628-648 bp) allowed us to identify 99.25% of 536 samples of eggs (293) and larvae (243) subjected to BOLD-IDS similarity analysis with a species-level threshold of 1.3%. The results revealed 37 species in 27 genera, 15 families and four orders, some 23.8% of documented fish species in the Paranapanema River. Molecular identification meant that we could include data from egg samples that accounted for about 30% of the species richness observed. The results in this study confirm the efficacy of DNA barcoding in identifying Neotropical ichthyoplankton and show how the data produced provide valuable information for preparing plans for conserving and managing inland waters.

ABSTRACT

Fourteen polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for the Neotropical cichlid Geophagus brasiliensis and tested on 30 individuals belonging to a single population. Among the 14 loci described, four showed potential presence of null alleles, inferred from the excess of homozygous genotypes, and three of these loci showed significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Fifty-nine different alleles were detected (ranging from two to eight alleles per locus), with estimates of observed and expected heterozygosity ranging from 0·167 to 0·700 and from 0·269 to 0·825. Cross-amplification of primers was successful in five other cichlid species.

Twenty-three Bacillus cereus isolates from food poisoning outbreaks associated with a diarrheal-type syndrome, fourteen foodborne isolates not associated with food poisoning and fifteen isolates from Brazilian soil samples were analyzed for the presence and genetic diversity (by RE-PCR) of the virulence genes ces (emetic toxin, cereulide), plcR-papR (pleiotropic regulator PlcR and peptide PapR), nheA (a component of the NHE complex), bceT (diarrheal enterotoxin bc-D-ENT), gyrB (B subunit of DNA gyrase), cytK-2 (necrotic enterotoxin cytotoxin K-2), and plcA (phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipase C). Additionally, these isolates were phenotypically characterized for motility, hemolytic and lecithinase activities, as well as HBL enterotoxin production. The group of isolates associated with food poisoning had the highest occurrence of the phenotypically analyzed factors and the most frequent occurrence and highest genetic diversity of the plcR-papR, nheA, bceT, cytK-2, plcA, and gyrB genes. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), in which all loci were analyzed, demonstrated that the genetic variation intragroup of isolates (92%) was significantly higher than that intergroup (8%) (P<0.05). These results were corroborated by an analysis of the genetic differentiation between the groups, which was low/moderate, the result of a high degree of allele sharing. Our results suggest that B. cereus isolates with the potential to cause food poisoning outbreaks do not have a specific genetic profile characterized by the presence of a particular gene or allele among the genes assessed. On the contrary, different combinations of genes encoding virulence factors may be present in different isolates of B. cereus that potentially cause food poisoning outbreaks.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The swine is an essential model for carrying out preclinical research and for teaching complex surgical procedures. There is a lack of experimental models describing anatomical and surgical aspects of total pancreatectomy in the pig. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experiments were performed on 10 white male swine weighing 27-33 kg. The animals were premedicated with midazolam (0.4 mg/kg, i.m.) and ketamine (4 mg/kg, i.m.). Anesthesia was induced with propofol (1-2 mg/kg, i.v.) and was maintained with propofol and fentanyl (0.3 mg and 0.1 µg/kg/min, respectively, i.v.). The surgical period ranged from 44 to 77 min. The pancreas anatomy, and the main arterial, venous and pancreatic duct anatomy were assessed. RESULTS: The pancreas anatomy was composed of 3 lobes, the 'splenic', 'duodenal' and 'connecting' lobe which is attached to the anterior portion of the portal vein. The splenic artery and the junction of the splenic vein and portal vein were divided. The left gastric artery was dissected and separated from its origin at the splenic artery. The head of the pancreas is disposed in a C shape. The pancreas was dissected and liberated from the right portion of the portal vein and the infrahepatic vena cava. The pancreas was separated from the duodenum preserving the pancreaticoduodenal artery, then we performed the total pancreatectomy preserving the duodenum, common bile duct and spleen. CONCLUSION: Total pancreatectomy with duodenum, bile duct and spleen preservation in the pig is feasible and an important instrument for research purposes and teaching surgical technique.
