ABSTRACT

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption to healthcare access worldwide and has impacted basic childhood immunization services. A decline in immunization coverage can cause immunity gaps and lead to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. Our study evaluated the association between mothers' knowledge, attitude, and behavior regarding immunization and child immunization status during the COVID-19 pandemic in Medan, Indonesia. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from April to November 2021. Mothers with children aged 0-12 months were interviewed about their knowledge, attitude, and behavior regarding immunization, and their child's immunization status. Results: Of 196 participants, 46.5% had low knowledge on immunization, 41.3% had a negative attitude, and 20.4% had negative behavior. Only 62.8% of participants had children with a complete vaccination status, and mothers with moderate knowledge (OR 2.65, 95% CI 1.08-6.61), negative attitude (OR 5.33, 95% CI 2.71-10.59), and negative behavior (OR 7.88, 95% CI 3.36-19.47) were more likely to not vaccinate their children. Conclusion: Mothers' attitude, behavior, and educational background were associated with child immunization status. Recovery efforts to improve immunization coverage are urgently needed, and should include efforts to reduce mothers' hesitancy regarding child vaccination during the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Indonesia stands as one of the nine malaria-endemic countries in Southeast Asia with a total of 443,530 cases in 2022. Eastern Indonesia is listed as an area with high malaria endemicity and the Indonesian government has set a target of eliminating malaria by 2030. From 2010 to 2014, the number of malaria cases decreased but stagnated until 2020 and have continued to increase. Stagnation may occur as a result of many non-medical treatment-seeking behaviors. The aim of this systematic review was to provide a summary and overview of malaria treatment-seeking behavior among communities in several regions in Indonesia. The searches were conducted through four databases (Cochrane, PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect) using medical subject headings (MeSH) "treatment-seeking behavior" OR "health-seeking behavior" AND "malaria" AND "Indonesia". This systematic review was limited to studies conducted in Indonesia that were published between 2013 and 2023 using either a quantitative or qualitative approach. Out of 2831 studies, a total of thirteen studies were included. The pattern of seeking malaria treatment varied between doing nothing or no action, self-treatment (purchasing drugs at pharmacies and consuming leftover medicines), traditional medicine, and medical treatment (public health facilities or malaria control clinics). Those behaviors are attributed to education level, socioeconomic level, occupation, distance from home to health facilities, geographical conditions, and people's perceptions of malaria and antimalarial medicines. There is still a range of malaria treatment-seeking behavior outside of recommended medical treatment in communities in several regions in Indonesia. The phenomenon of medical pluralism and syncretism requires approaches from various sectors in order to achieve a malaria-free Indonesia by 2030.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Technology has provided a type of facility in the world that currently makes the world like a virtual globe. One of the technologies currently used by humans is gadgets. Generally, children and adolescents nowadays often use gadget excessively. They use it excessively which may affect their social and emotional functions. AIM: This study aims to determine the relationship between the duration of playing gadget and mental-emotional state of elementary school students. METHODS: This study uses Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) which contains 25 questions that can be used for children aged 8 to 16 years. This research was conducted in August 2018 with fourth-grade students of Public Elementary School and Private Elementary School Medan as respondents. This study uses a cross-sectional study method with the chi-square test as a statistical hypothesis test. The number of respondents in this study was 103 students consist of 73 students of Public Elementary School and 30 students of Private Elementary School Medan. RESULTS: The results of this study found a relationship between the duration of playing gadgets on mental-emotional at elementary school students with a probability value of 0.0001 (p < 0.05) and the relationship between the frequency of using gadgets and mental-emotional with a probability value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant relationship between mental emotional and the duration of playing gadgets and the frequency of using gadgets elementary school students.
