ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate Pinus halepensis Mill. seeds oil as well as methanolic-aqueous extract on fatty acid and phenolic's composition as well as antioxidant activities with regard to the cones drying methods: convection and sun methods. The highest amounts of total phenols (14.63 ± 0.05 mg GAE/g DW), flavonoids (3.3 ± 0.02 mg QE/g DW), and condensed tannins (0.36 ± 0.05 mg CE/g DW) were showed in the seeds obtained by sun-dried method. Methanolic-aqueous seeds extracts were subjected to LC-ESI-MS analysis in order to identify and quantify the phenolic composition. This technique allowed us to identify eleven phenolic compounds: two phenolic acids and nine flavonoid compounds such as cirsiliol, catechin (+), luteolin, and luteolin-7-O-glucoside, which were present in the two studied samples while apigenin, naringenin, and cirsilineol were only identified in the extract obtained from sun-drying method seeds. The chemical components of the oils were analyzed using GC, and significant differences were found between the two studied seeds oil (p < .05). Furthermore, the antioxidant activities were investigated using DPPH and ABTS.+ assays. The results showed that the methanolic-aqueous extract from seeds dried by sun method had the highest antioxidant activities (0.08 and 0.05 mg/ml, respectively). This study could provide useful information for industry to produce potentially bioactive plant extract.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: For Down syndrome (DS), traditional epidemiological studies to determine the prevalence, cause, and clinical significance of the syndrome have been conducted over the last 100 years. In Tunisia, the current work is the first in-depth study in epidemiology of DS from fetopathological data. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this epidemiological study was to determine the impact of some feto-maternal characteristics in occurrence of DS and to search the frequency of associated congenital malformations with this syndrome. METHODS: Our retrospective study was realized for 144 fetuses with DS among 9321 autopsied fetuses in embryo-fetopathological service between 1994 and 2011. RESULTS: In our study, the majority of mothers (72.91%) were 35 years and older, with a statistically significant difference (p<10-6, OR=16.7, CI=8.7-32.4). The abnormalities of extremities (31%) were the most common fetal abnormalities followed by facial (23.51%) and digestive abnormalities (19.63%). CONCLUSION: One of the main conclusions of this research is that the most common risk factor for DS is maternal age. On the other hand, the type and the frequency of associated congenital anomalies with DS are still controversial.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the effects of novobiocin, a gyrase inhibitor, on the growth, survival, motility and whole cell proteins of S. Typhimurium dam and/or seqA strains. Our results showed that the dam and seqA/dam mutants are the most sensitive to novobiocin, compared to wild type and seqA strains. Surprisingly, the motility of seqA mutants increased after exposure to novobiocin only in stationary phase cells. All the other strains showed a significant decrease in their motility. The analysis of protein profiles of all strains demonstrated several modifications as manifested by the alteration of the expression levels of certain bands. Our work is therefore of great interest in understanding the effects of novobiocin on S. Typhimurium and the involvement of DNA methylation.
