ABSTRACT

An experimental campaign aiming at investigating the ion acceleration mechanisms through laser-matter interaction in femtosecond domain has been carried out at the Intense Laser Irradiation Laboratory facility with a laser intensity of up to 2 × 10(19) W/cm(2). A Thomson parabola spectrometer was used to obtain the spectra of the ions of the different species accelerated. Here, we show the energy spectra of light-ions and we discuss their dependence on structural characteristics of the target and the role of surface and target bulk in the acceleration process.

ABSTRACT

In laser-driven plasma, ion acceleration of aluminum with the production of a quasi-monoenergetic beam has occurred. A useful device to analyze the ions is the Thomson parabolas spectrometer, a well-known diagnostic that is able to obtain information on charge-to-mass ratio and energy distribution of the charged particles. At the LENS (Laser Energy for Nuclear Science) laboratory of INFN-LNS in Catania, experimental measures were carried out; the features of LENS are: Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with 2 J laser energy, 1064 nm fundamental wavelengths, and 6 ns pulse duration.

ABSTRACT

An experimental campaign aiming to investigate the effects of innovative nanostructured targets based on Ag nanowires on laser energy absorption in the ns time domain has been carried out at the Laser Energy for Nuclear Science laboratory of INFN-LNS in Catania. The tested targets were realized at INFN-Bologna by anodizing aluminium sheets in order to obtain layers of porous Al2O3 of different thicknesses, on which nanowires of various metals are grown by electro-deposition with different heights. Targets were then irradiated by using a Nd:YAG laser at different pumping energies. Advanced diagnostic tools were used for characterizing the plasma plume and ion production. As compared with targets of pure Al, a huge enhancement (of almost two order of magnitude) of the X-ray flux emitted by the plasma has been observed when using the nanostructured targets, with a corresponding decrease of the "optical range" signal, pointing out that the energetic content of the laser produced plasma was remarkably increased. This analysis was furthermore confirmed from time-of-flight spectra.

ABSTRACT

The Versatile Ion Source (VIS) is a microwave discharge ion source installed at INFN-LNS and here used as test-bench for the production of high intensity low emittance proton beams and for studies on plasma physics. A series of measurements have been carried out with VIS in order to test the source with light ions. In particular a He(+) beam has been characterized in terms of plasma discharge parameters. The experiment has been triggered by the observation of X-radiation emission from the plasma for some configuration of the magnetic field profile. The plasma electron energy distribution function is in fact modified when in some regions of the plasma chamber under-resonance discharge takes place, fulfilling the condition that allows the electromagnetic wave to electrostatic wave conversion. These tests allowed obtaining more than 50 mA of He(+) beams.

ABSTRACT

An experimental campaign aiming to detect X radiation emitted by the plasma of the CAPRICE source - operating at GSI, Darmstadt - has been carried out. Two different detectors (a SDD - Silicon Drift Detector and a HpGe - hyper-pure Germanium detector) have been used to characterize the warm (2-30 keV) and hot (30-500 keV) electrons in the plasma, collecting the emission intensity and the energy spectra for different pumping wave frequencies and then correlating them with the CSD of the extracted beam measured by means of a bending magnet. A plasma emissivity model has been used to extract the plasma density along the cone of sight of the SDD and HpGe detectors, which have been placed beyond specific collimators developed on purpose. Results show that the tuning of the pumping frequency considerably modifies the plasma density especially in the warm electron population domain, which is the component responsible for ionization processes: a strong variation of the plasma density near axis region has been detected. Potential correlations with the charge state distribution in the plasma are explored.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Patients with cryptorchidism can have such short spermatic vessels that it is impossible to place the testicle in a satisfactory scrotal position using conventional orchiopexy. In these cases the most commonly used operation is 1 to 2-stage Fowler-Stephens orchiopexy. We present our surgical experience using staged inguinal orchiopexy without section of the spermatic vessels in patients with short spermatic vessels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used 2-stage inguinal orchiopexy in 38 children with intra-abdominal testis or testis peeping through the internal ring and short spermatic vessels (7 bilateral). Spermatic vessels were not sectioned, but were lengthened through progressive traction of the spermatic cord wrapped in polytetrafluoroethylene pericardial membrane (Preclude). In the first stage we mobilized the spermatic cord in the retroperitoneal space and then wrapped it in the polytetrafluoroethylene membrane. We subsequently attached the testis to the invaginated scrotal bottom. At 9 to 12 months we performed the second stage, which involved removing the polytetrafluoroethylene membrane. RESULTS: From the first to the second stage we observed progressive descent of the testicle toward the scrotum. At 1 to 8-year followup after the second stage all 45 testicles were palpable in a satisfactory scrotal position with stable or increased testicular volume. CONCLUSIONS: This technique represents an alternative to Fowler-Stephens orchiopexy, which can be associated with a greater risk of testicular ischemia.

ABSTRACT

Clinical trials have firmly established that 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins) can induce the regression of vascular atherosclerosis and reduce cardiovascular-related morbidity and death in patients with and without coronary artery disease. It is usually assumed that these beneficial effects are due to the ability of statins to reduce cholesterol synthesis. However, because mevalonic acid is not only the precursor of cholesterol but also of many non-steroidal isoprenoid compounds, the inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase may lead to pleiotropic effects. As shown by the data reported in this review, some statins can interfere with major events involved in the formation of atherosclerotic lesions, regardless of their hypolipidemic properties. The relevance of these effects in humans remains to be established (particularly in view of the high statin doses required to produce a direct vascular action), thus their contribution to the reduction in cardiovascular events observed in clinical trials has become one of the major challenges for future studies aimed at clarifying the anti-atherosclerotic benefits of statins.
