ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to analyze mycelial growth under different culture conditions and antimicrobial activity of Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.: Fr.) Kumm. (DPUA 1533) and P. ostreatus (Jacq.: Fr.) Kumm. cv. Florida (DPUA 1534) against fungi and bacteria of medical importance. The growth of Pleurotus species was evaluated in natural and complex media, with and without light, at 25°C and 28°C for 8, 15, and 30 days. Candida albicans (DPUA 1336), Cryptococcus laurentii (DPUA 1501), Aspergillus flavus (DPUA 1836), Escherichia coli (DAUPE 224), and Mycobacterium smegmatis (ATCC 607) were used to test antibiosis. Under all growth conditions in vitro, Pleurotus species evidenced growth and high density of mycelia on potato dextrose agar and Sabouraud agar with yeast extract; mycelial growth but lesser mycelial density was observed on rice bran extract agar. Organic mycelial extracts of Pleurotus species exhibited potential antibacterial and antifungal activity, and were selective for the tested microorganisms.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to analyze the mycelial growth under different culture conditions and the antimicrobial activity of Lentinus citrinus Walleyn & Rammeloo DPUA 1535 and Neolentinus lepideus (Fr.) Redhead & Ginns DPUA 1536 against some fungi and bacteria. The growth of Lentinus spp. was evaluated in natural and complex media, with and without light, at 25°C and 28°C for 8, 15, and 30 days. To test antimicrobial activity, we used Candida albicans DPUA 1336, Cryptococcus laurentii DPUA 1501, Aspergillus flavus DPUA 1836, Escherichia coli DAUPE 224, and Mycobacterium smegmatis ATCC 607. L. citrinus showed strong growth in potato dextrose and rice meal agars in the absence and presence of light, at 28°C, and over 8, 15, and 30 days. N. lepideus grew well in Sabouraud agar in the absence and presence of light at 25°C for 8 and 15 days. L. citrinus evidenced mycelial growth and high density in potato dextrose agar, although lesser mycelial density was observed in rice bran extract agar. N. lepideus showed less abundant mycelial growth and density in the 3 culture media. Organic mycelial extracts of Lentinus species demonstrated a potential antibacterial and antifungal activity, with selectivity to the test-microorganisms under in vitro growth conditions.

ABSTRACT

Phosphorus fertilization and ways of phosphate fertilizers application are important factors considering crop management. This study aimed at assessing the effect of phosphorus rates and phosphate fertilizers application forms on growth and phosphorus uptake of cowpea plants cropped on cerrado soil in the State of Roraima, Brazil. An experiment took place under field conditions, on a Yellow Latosol, at Cauamé Campus of Roraima's Federal University, located in the municipality of Boa Vista/RR. The experimental design was split-plot, in a completely randomized blocks, with three replicates. The plots consisted of the following phosphoric fertilizers application forms: a) broadcasting; b) single furrow and c) double furrow. Sub-plots corresponded to phosphorus doses: 0, 0,5; 1,0; 1,5, and 2,0 times the recommended dose for cowpea maintenance fertilization (60 kg ha-1 of P2O5). There was a significant effect of P rates over plant growth and plant uptake. Application of fertilizer in double furrows promoted higher plant growth, grain yield, and plant phosphorous uptake.

ABSTRACT

The clinical case of a 39 years old female is reported, with the diagnosis of tumor of the right kidney extending into the infra-hepatic vena cava, assuming the shape of a floating thrombus. The patient underwent right radical nephrectomy, followed by resection of the intra caval tumor. Both the procedure and post operative course were uneventfull. Histopathological evaluation of the specimens, associated to specific imunohistochemistry studies, confirmed the diagnosis of angiomyolipoma of the kidney. A review of the literature concluded that this is the 27th case published of a kidney angiomyolipoma extending into the inferior vena cava, thus justifying its presentation and divulgation.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the clinical condition of a 56 year old male patient is reported, with the diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma, complicated by a tumoral thrombus, extended from the renal vein into the vena cava and right atrium, who underwent surgical treatment. The operation consisted in the radical nephrectomy associated to the vena caval thrombectomy, under extracorporeal circulation, utilizing a multidisciplinary team composed by urologists, vascular and cardio-thoracic surgeons. The main features related to the diagnosis and surgical management of this case are described and discussed, according to data taken from the most recent publications of the literature on the subject.
