ABSTRACT

Unlike wh-question questions in Standard Arabic (SA), which received much attention in the past decades in different approaches within generative grammar, question particles (yes-no questions) in SA have not yet been studied thoroughly in minimalist syntax, and less attention has been paid to them. There is a need to analyze SA question articles and explore their syntactic behavior within minimalism. The reason why this topic has been selected for study is that SA question particles have not been investigated in detail yet in Chomsky's Phase Theory; it has not been analyzed how question particles are derived and represented morpho-syntactically in a clause structure. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the morpho-syntax of SA question particles and provide satisfactory answers to the following questions: (i) Do question particles in SA undergo any syntactic movement to [Spec-CP] in the derivation of yes-no questions? If not, why?, (ii) Are question particles based-generated in [Spec-CP]?, and (iii) How can question particles be accounted for neatly in Chomsky's Phase-based Theory? The paper adopts Chomsky's Phase Theory to examine the interaction between the assumptions of this theory and the SA data on question particles. The study findings reveal that, unlike English, question particles in SA do not undergo any syntactic movement while deriving yes-no questions and are assumed to be base-generated in [Spec-CP]. Such question particles are not part of the verb morphology and are merely morphological affixes used as devices to mark interrogativity in the syntax; they do not carry any agreement and tense features that trigger syntactic movement to the clause-initial position.

Writing as a productive skill is extremely challenging for EFL students. To promote their writing effectiveness, students' intrinsic motivation must be enhanced by allowing them to self-assign writing topics or write about topics of interest. Therefore, this study describes how EFL students become motivated by self-assigning their writing topics and identifies students' attitudes and writing skills in topic-based interest in the EFL writing context. A descriptive-diagnostic method was applied to achieve the study objectives. A sample of 200 EFL students responded to a closed-item questionnaire on intrinsic motivation based on topic-based interest in writing. In addition, 20 students participated in semi-structured interviews on their attitudes toward topic-based interest. The study sample showed a high level of intrinsic motivation based on their self-assignment of writing topics. Furthermore, female students showed higher intrinsic motivation if they could self-assign their writing topics than male students. In addition, students with higher GPAs exhibited higher intrinsic motivation. Moreover, the interviews revealed that intrinsically motivated students most enhanced their writing skills in ideas, vocabulary, and choice of words. The researchers suggest that students' self-assignment of writing topics be considered in teaching writing as it contributes to improving intrinsic motivation.

ABSTRACT

The Mehri Language is an endangered language spoken in eastern Yemen, a sub-group of the Semitic language family, and a Southern Arabic language. The syntax of Mehri wh-questions has not been explored within minimalism; hence, there is a morpho-syntactic need to provide a modern analysis of wh-questions in order to show how the interrogative structures can be derived. This study aims to examine the syntax of the wh-question movement in Mehri's unaccusative/ergative and unergative structures and answer the following questions within Chomsky's (2000 and 2008) Phase-based Theory: (i) Does the Mehri language allow fronting of wh-phrases to [Spec-CP]? And (ii) how can wh-movement in Mehri unaccusative and (un)ergative structures be accounted for? This work presents a novel analysis of wh-question movement in unaccusative/ergative and unergative structures in Mehri; it demonstrates that the source head C triggers the movement of wh-adjunct and wh-subject phrases. In wh-adjunct extraction, two strategies are employed: overt wh-fronting and wh-in-situ; when the head Foc inherits an edge feature from C, wh-adjunct overtly undergoes movement from its original position within v*P to the left peripheries of [Spec-FocP] and subsequently to [Spec-CP]. When the lexical wh-adjunct remains within v*P, its question features covertly move to [Spec-CP], because the head Foc does not inherit an edge feature from C. In wh-subject extraction, the wh-subject overly undergoes movement to [Spec-CP] because C obligatorily inherits the edge feature to the head Top, which triggers movement of the illogical subject in unaccusative/ergative structures and the logical external specifier in unergative structures to [Spec-CP]. Moreover, Mehri obeys the Phase Impenetrability Condition of Chomsky, where wh-subject and wh-adjunct phrases must pass through certain phases until [Spec-CP].

ABSTRACT

This research project bridges the gap between Saudi Vision 2030 and labor market needs by strengthening English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' critical thinking skills. The increasing unemployment rates may not be due to insufficient vacancies in the labor market, but graduates' lack of the general abilities deemed vital to meet the labor market needs. With employability in mind, this study reiterates that graduates should ideally be advanced specialists, critical researchers, creative initiators, and active communicators to be more competitive and contribute to the prosperity of their nation. Therefore, this research employs a quasi-experimental design (time series design) to investigate how effectively students' critical thinking skills are enriched using a video-mediated self-study program through Telegram. Studies in this respect, regarding the Saudi EFL context, are limited. Therefore, this research employed a video-mediated self-study program through Telegram on learning critical thinking skills for EFL students majoring in English or Translation. The data collection included a pre-and post-test on critical thinking skills and a semi-structured interview. The findings showed that students improved their critical thinking skills due to the training program compared to their performance before the treatment at a low level. Besides, the participants evaluated learning critical thinking skills from thinking ways, feelings, benefits, motivation, challenges and problems, and suggestions. In light of the findings, recommendations were presented.

ABSTRACT

Studies and reports indicate that some graduates struggle to find jobs, in part because they lack the key presentation skills and competencies the labor market needs. Thus, this research investigated the effectiveness of a Blackboard-mediated intervention program in strengthening English as a foreign language (EFL) students' presentation skills. The research followed a quasi-experimental (time series) design, delivering workshops on presentation skills and collecting data from the students (N = 30) using a set of instruments: a pre-and post-assessment checklist and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the students' presentation skills improved significantly post intervention. Also, the participants reported positive attitudes concerning the intervention. Drawing on these findings, recommendations and suggestions are presented.

ABSTRACT

The acute abdomen is a life threatening condition, its proper diagnosis and treatment is a great challenge until today in surgery. The authors aim to present the diagnostic difficulties in four cases of acute abdomen caused by large benign ovarian tumors. Vast majority of benign ovarian tumors are recognized accidentally through physical examination, X-ray and ultrasonography of the pelvis, abdominal operation is carried out for other reasons or investigations for acute abdominal pain. The case history, physical examination and radiological procedures do not always lead to the correct diagnosis. The authors diagnosed the disease through laparotomy, and an adequate operation was carried out subsequently. Following the operation, all four patients left the hospital in good condition.

ABSTRACT

Primary malignancies in the small intestine are relatively rare. There are no specific methods to find these tumours in early stage. The authors report a case of a primary T-cell lymphoma in the small bowel that caused diagnostic challenges. A 66-year-old woman presenting with abdominal pain and and a palpable mass in the left upper quadrant of her abdomen was admitted into the hospital. Blood tests, endoscopic examinations, ultrasonography and CT scan could not reveal a definitive diagnosis. While a small bowel follow through examination demonstrated an entero-enteral fistula, its exact position could not have been determined. Consequently, an exploratory laparotomy was carried out, and a tumour was found involving the small bowel loops. The involved portion of the small intestine (with the fistula) was resected, and a side-to-side small bowel anastomosis was performed. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses revealed a primary T-cell lymphoma of the small bowel. There was no evidence of metastatic disease at the time of surgery. The patient received adjuvant chemotherapy, but three months later multiple lung metastases were detected. Small bowel malignant tumours cause significant diagnostic difficulties. Therefore, diagnosis and adequate treatment are usually delayed for some weeks. In the future, capsule endoscopy could help in the diagnostic work-up. Nevertheless, surgical exploration and resection of the tumour will be necessary for the correct diagnosis and treatment.
