ABSTRACT

Background The Covid-19 pandemic caused a rapidly evolving and confused situation. Health sciences students (HSSs) are not immune to depression, anxiety and stress during such a pandemic. We aimed to assess the relation between depression, anxiety, stress and resilience among undergraduate HSSs during the Covid-19 lockdown. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional, online survey at a rural tertiary healthcare centre in Maharashtra. Data were recorded from study participants on sociodemographic details using the 21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). Data were analysed using SPSS software version 15.0. Results A total of 381 students participated in the online survey. The prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress were 7.6%, 6.3% and 1.0%, respectively. There was a positive correlation between all three sub-scales of DASS-21. On BRS, 5 (1.3%) participants had high resilience, 216 (56.7%) had normal resilience and 160 (42.0%) had low resilience. Those respondents who had high resilience had lower rates of depression, anxiety and stress on DASS-21 sub-scales. Conclusion A proportion of HSSs had anxiety, depression and stress during the Covid-19 outbreak and lockdown. Respondents with high resilience had less frequent depression, anxiety and stress. In the long run, strengthening resilience of HSSs may be useful.

ABSTRACT

Introduction Menstruation is an essential phenomenon in an adolescent girl's life. In India, females who are menstruating are considered impure and teenage girls are not allowed to undertake home chores or engage in religious or cultural events during their period. Up-to-date knowledge about menstruation, beginning in early adolescence, would improve safe practices and relieve the distress of millions of women. Material and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescent girls (10-19 years) residing in a tribal area of Nagpur District from January to March 2022. Three tribal residential schools (Ashram Shala) were selected from a total of six in Hingana Taluka of Nagpur District, using simple random sampling to fulfill the required sample size of 272. Demographic details, age at menarche, awareness of menstruation, sources of information about menstruation, menstrual hygiene practices, and restrictions observed during menstruation were assessed. Results The average age at menarche was 13.04+0.96 years (range 11-16 years). Only 45.17% of girls were aware of the menarche and menstrual cycle before its onset. The duration of the menstrual cycle ranged from 21-35 days in most of the girls (90.69%), and it was regular in 85.86% of girls. Duration of bleeding was two to six days for the majority of the girls (87.93%). Around 73.79% of girls were using sanitary pads, while 26.21% of girls were using clothes. The most important restrictions imposed on the girls during menstruation were not being allowed to attend religious functions (97.93%), followed by not being allowed to attend classes (65.86%). The use of sanitary pads was significantly more in late adolescent girls than in early adolescent girls (ꭓ2=14.97, p=0.0001), girls who have literate mothers than girls with illiterate mothers (ꭓ2=5.17, p=0.02), and girls belonging to higher socioeconomic classes (class I, II, III) than lower ones (class IV, V) (ꭓ2=44.23, p<0.0001). Conclusion The tribal adolescent girls still don't exercise proper hygiene throughout their periods. During menstruation, the majority of girls are still subjected to various restrictions.

ABSTRACT

Emerging and re-emerging viral infections pose a constant threat, especially in healthcare settings. Viral infections can be thought of as an ecological system, like a forest or a pond, with different species competing for resources. Pandemics tend to occur when there is a disruption to this ecosystem, such as introducing a strain of virus into humans or animals that they have no immunity against. Around 60% of human infectious diseases and 75% of emerging infections are zoonotic, with two-thirds originating in wildlife. There is an ongoing risk of viral diseases as the human population continues to grow and the rate of urbanization increases. The emergence and re-emergence of viral diseases are influenced by a variety of virologic and environmental factors. These factors can be roughly categorized as affecting humans, the environment and/or ecology, and viruses. The spread of zoonotic diseases among humans can be prevented by reducing the transmission risk associated with wildlife and exotic pets through education, legislation, and behavioral change programs that target individuals at risk for exposure.

Background Diabetes is a long-term metabolic condition that results in high blood sugar levels from either reduced insulin production or diminished tissue sensitivity to insulin. Peripheral neuropathy is the most frequent consequence of diabetes. In this research project, with the aid of neurophysiological measures, we conducted a cross-sectional study to examine the impact of glycemic management on the physiological functioning of nerves, regardless of the duration of diabetes. Objectives The main objective of the study was to investigate the association between the degree of glycemic control and the severity of neurological changes. The study also aimed to clarify whether glycemic management, independent of the duration of diabetes, acts as an independent risk factor for the emergence of diabetic neuropathy. Methodology A total of 150 type 2 diabetic patients visiting the diabetic outpatient department were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups: group A consisted of 90 subjects with HbA1c levels <10 and group B comprised 60 subjects with HbA1c levels >10. In the neurophysiology lab, an electrodiagnostic exam was conducted on the sensory (sural nerve) and motor (tibial nerve) parameters. Data on the neurophysiological parameters of the two groups were analyzed and compared. Results When the neurophysiological parameters of the two groups (group A having HbA1c <10 and group B having HbA1c >10) were analyzed, it was observed that group B had lower conduction velocity (CV) and amplitude potential than group A, with a significant statistical difference (p<0.05). It was also observed that sensory parameters were more affected than motor parameters. Conclusion Based on our findings, glycemic control is related to the severity of neuropathic changes.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious problem that poses an imminent threat to patient safety. But drug-resistant bacteria can be prevented from spreading in hospital facilities by implementing effective antimicrobial stewardship practices. Antimicrobial stewardship programs are a set of measures taken by an organization to optimize antimicrobial use, improve patient outcomes, reduce AMR and healthcare-associated infections, and save healthcare costs. Healthcare facilities should have a defined antimicrobial stewardship policy in place that is available to all stakeholders. The policy should be evidence-based, regularly updated, and communicated clearly both verbally and through visual means such as posters. All staff should be trained on the proper use of antimicrobials as well as how to report misuse. Antibiotic stewardship measures include: educating and screening patients, monitoring, updating policies, limiting the use of high-risk medications, developing and improving hand hygiene practices, tracing the path of each medication, using computerized alert probes, using computerized medication records, educating staff, and creating the culture of prevention. There are several ways that antimicrobial stewardship practices can be implemented in the healthcare setting, including limiting the use of antibiotics and promoting healthy behaviors. With these strategies in place, infections can be prevented from occurring in the first place.
