KIE: The French government is beginning to take an active interest in legal and ethical issues surrounding health care, new reproductive technologies, and biomedical research. The creation in 1983 of a National Consultative Committee on Ethics for the Life and Health Sciences was a major milestone. The French health system was late in responding to international interest in ethical review, with the first committee concerned with medical ethics not having been established at the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) until 1974. Ambroselli, who is director of INSERM's center of documentation on ethics for the National Consultative Committee, traces the evolution of government, professional, and public involvement in confronting bioethical issues in France.^ieng
