ABSTRACT

In this research 1, 10 - phenanthroline functionalized CaFe2O4 - starch was employed as a magnetic ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) for highly selective targeting toxic Pb2+ ions from aqueous media. VSM analysis revealed that the sorbent has magnetic saturation of 10 emu g-1 which is appropriate for magnetic separation. Moreover, TEM analysis confirmed that the adsorbent is composed of particles with a mean diameter of 10 nm. According to XPS analysis, lead coordination with phenanthroline is the main adsorption mechanism that is along with electrostatic interaction. A maximum adsorption capacity of 120 mg g-1 was obtained within 10 min at a pH of 6 and an adsorbent dosage of 20 mg. Kinetic and isotherm studies showed that lead adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, respectively. The selectivity coefficient of Pb (II) relative to Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Cd(II) was 4.7, 14, 20, 36, 13 and 25, respectively. Moreover, the IIP represents the imprinting factor of 1.32. The sorbent showed good regeneration after five cycles of the sorption/desorption process with an efficiency of >93 %. Finally represented IIP was used for lead preconcentration from various matrices i.e., water, vegetable, and fish samples.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis are common in some areas of Iran and consider as health problems. Phlebotomus alexandri has been incriminated as a suspected vector for the both form of leishmaniasis. METHODS: This study was carried out in 4 western provinces of Iran. Sand flies were collected using sticky traps and light traps from indoor and outdoor resting places. Nested PCR was employed to detect Leishmania parasites among collected sand flies. RESULTS: Seven hundred and twenty two P. alexandri females were collected and pooled in 179 batches. Results of nested PCR showed, out of 9 samples from East Azerbaijan Province, only one sample was infected by Leishmania infantum. Of 34 individual and pooled samples from Kermanshah Province, only one pooled sample was infected with Leishmania major and among 30 individual and pooled samples in Fars Province, five specimens were infected by L. major, L. infantum, Leishmania donovani and Leishmania tropica. Furthermore, out of 108 individual and pooled samples from Khuzestan Province, 10 samples showed infection with L. major and L. infantum. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that P. alexandri is more active in hot zones than in moderate zones and this species may be considered as a permissive species.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, the partitioning of α-lactalbumin, ß-lactoglobulin, and cheese whey proteins in aqueous two-phase system of polyvinylpyrrolidone-potassium phosphate is investigated. The partitioning of proteins in this system depends on the polymer and salt weight percents in feed, temperature, and pH. The orthogonal central composite design is used to study the effects of different parameters on partitioning of α-lactalbumin and ß-lactoglobulin. A second order model is proposed to determine the impact of these parameters. The results of the model show that the weight percent of the salt in feed has a large effect on the protein partitioning. The weight percent of polyvinylpyrrolidone in the feed increases the partitioning coefficients. By increasing the temperature, the viscosity of polyvinylpyrrolidone is reduced and the protein can easily be transferred from one phase to the other phase. The pH of the aqueous two phase system can alter the protein partitioning coefficient through the variation of the protein net charge.
