ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate supraspinal modulation of human lower limb reflex receptive fields (RRFs) on the plantar side of the foot during cognitive tasks either distracting the subjects or actively directing their attention to the electrical stimuli directed to the sole of the foot. METHODS: Twelve healthy volunteers participated. Nociceptive withdrawal reflexes (NWRs) were recorded in the ankle flexor tibialis anterior. The RRF was acquired by randomized activation of ten stimulation sites on the sole of the foot. The RRF was assessed during baseline, distraction, and attention in randomized order. Distraction was induced by the Stroop test, while attention was induced by requiring the subjects to localize the site of the stimulation and thereby forcing them to focus on the sole of the foot. RESULTS: The area of the RRF was significantly enlarged during the distraction task compared to baseline (P<0.05), whereas the RRF area was significantly reduced during the attention task compared to baseline (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The size of the RRF area was modulated by the cognitive state demonstrating a link between the cognitive activity and the descending control on spinal withdrawal reflex pathways.

ABSTRACT

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between intake of different types of alcoholic beverages and self reported subjective health. DESIGN: Cross sectional health survey with assessment of intake of beer, wine and spirits (at last non-weekend day), smoking habits, social networks, physical activity, body mass index, educational level, presence of chronic disease, and self reported health. SETTING: WHO Copenhagen Healthy City Survey, Denmark. PARTICIPANTS: 4113 men and 7926 women aged 18 to 100 years. MAIN RESULTS: Of the 12,039 subjects, 8680 reported their health as optimal, and 3359 reported a suboptimal health. After controlling for the covariates, the relation between total alcohol intake and the proportion reporting suboptimal health was J shaped. Heavy drinkers of any of the three types of alcoholic beverages had a higher prevalence of suboptimal health than non-drinkers. However, only light (1-2 glasses of wine yesterday) and moderate (3-5) wine drinkers had significantly lower odds ratios for suboptimal health--0.72 (95% confidence limits; 0.56 to 0.92) and 0.65 (0.49 to 0.87), respectively--when compared with non-wine drinkers. Moderate beer or spirits drinkers did not differ significantly from non-drinkers of these beverages with regard to prevalence of suboptimal health. Consistently, beer preference drinkers had an odds ratio of 1.50 (1.25 to 1.80) for suboptimal health compared with wine preference drinkers. CONCLUSIONS: A light to moderate wine intake is related to good self perceived health, whereas this is not the case for beer and spirits. The causal relations creating this association are unknown and should be considered when interpreting the relation between different types of alcoholic beverages and subsequent morbidity and mortality.

ABSTRACT

The work consists of a statistical study of the workload on a labour ward. This included a study of the admission/birth frequency and an investigation of the factors that influenced the process of admissions and the time spent on the ward. Also the relation between the number of midwives and women in labour present on the ward was investigated. It was found that the variation in the number of spontaneous admissions/births could be described reasonably well by a Poisson distribution. A simple statistical model was proposed to calculate the number of midwives necessary at any given birth frequency. For a specific choice of parameters the model fitted the actual distribution very well. The relative frequency of complications was highest for women with no previous births and smallest for women with one previous birth. The time spent on the labour ward depended significantly on the number of times the woman had given birth before and on whether the present delivery was complicated.

ABSTRACT

Review of all of the abortion consultations from 1986 revealed that 46 of the young women under the age of 18 years utilised the possibility of applying for abortion without permission from their parents which the Danish legislation on termination of pregnancy in 1973 permits. Forty-two of the young women were granted permission for abortion without permission from the parents as it was considered that the relationship between the girl and her parents would otherwise deteriorate. This was not considered to be the case in the four girls for whom application for termination of pregnancy was refused. This material, which is focussed on a problem which has not previously been illustrated, is too limited to permit drawing of any conclusions but there is no information about whether the requirement of parental permission is beneficial or deleterious for the parent/daughter relationship. Relevant investigations are required.
