ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Given the complex and unclear etiology of neck pain, it is important to understand the differences in central sensitization as well as psychosocial factors in individuals with chronic neck pain and healthy controls. The purpose of this study was to benchmark differences in central sensitization, psychosocial factors, and range of motion between people with nonspecific chronic neck pain and healthy controls and to analyze the correlation between pain intensity, neck disability, and psychosocial factors in people with chronic neck pain. METHODS: Thirty individuals with chronic neck pain and 30 healthy controls were included in this case-control study. Outcome measures were as follows: central sensitization (pressure pain threshold, temporal summation, and conditioned pain modulation), psychosocial factors (depressive symptoms, pain catastrophizing, and quality of life), and active cervical range of motion. RESULTS: People with neck pain had lower local pressure pain threshold, a decrease in conditioned pain modulation, more depressive symptoms, greater pain catastrophizing, lower quality of life, and reduced range of motion for neck rotation when compared with healthy controls. In people with neck pain, moderate correlations were observed between pain intensity and quality of life (ρ = -0.479), disability and pain catastrophizing (ρ = 0.379), and disability and quality of life (ρ = -0.456). CONCLUSIONS: People with neck pain have local hyperalgesia, impaired conditioning pain modulation, depressive symptoms, pain catastrophizing, low quality of life, and reduced active range of motion during neck rotation, which should be taken into account during assessment and treatment. IMPACT: This study shows that important outcomes, such as central sensitization and psychosocial factors, should be considered during assessment and treatment of individuals with nonspecific chronic neck pain. In addition, pain intensity and neck disability are correlated with psychosocial factors.

ABSTRACT

Skin Flap is used in reconstructive plastic surgery. However, complications such as ischemia followed by local necrosis may occur, requiring a new surgical procedure. It is well known that photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is an effective technique for improving microcirculation and neoangiogenesis, which contributes positively to the blood supply in the pre and post surgical period. Thus, the objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of preemptive treatment with laser PBMT with different energies on the viability in skin flaps in rats. Sixty-three Wistar rats, male, were randomized into five groups: Control Group (CG) (n = 15): PBMT simulation; Preemptive group 1.1 J laser (GP1) (n = 15): preemptive laser PBMT with 1.1 J of energy per point; Preemptive group 4 J laser (GP4) (n = 15): preemptive PBMT with 4 J of energy per point; Laser group 11 J (G1) (n = 9): PBMT immediately after surgery with 1.1 J of energy per point; Laser group 4 J (G4) (n = 9): TFMB immediately after surgery with 4 J of energy per point. The CG, GP1 and GP4 groups started treatment 72 h prior to surgery and were subdivided into two experimental periods, one of them on the day of the flap and the other along with the other groups on the seventh postoperative day. Three days after the randomization, the animals underwent random skin flap surgery. PBMT was performed with a 660 nm laser at three points. In the first experimental period, a greater number of vessels were found, as well as mast cells in GP1 compared to the CG and greater expression of fibroblast growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor in the GP1 and GP4 groups compared to the CG. In the second experimental period, GP1 presented a lower percentage of necrotic tissue, a higher number of vessels and a percentage of cells labeled with both VEGF and hypoxia indicible factor alpha (HIF-1α) compared to the CG, FGF in GP1, GP4 and G4 when compared to the CG. Thus, it was concluded that preemptive treatment with PBMT with the application of 1.1 J of energy per point is effective in improving the viability of the skin flap.

ABSTRACT

Biomaterial-based bone grafts have an important role in the field of bone tissue engineering. One of the most promising classes of biomaterials is collagen, including the ones from marine biodiversity (in general, called spongin (SPG)). Also, hydroxyapatite (HA) has an important role in stimulating bone metabolism. Therefore, this work investigated the association of HA and SPG composites in order to evaluate their physico-chemical and morphological characteristics and their in vitro biological performance. For this, pre-set composite disks were evaluated by means of mass loss after incubation, pH, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and "in vitro" cell viability. pH measurements showed no statistical difference between groups. Moreover, a higher mass loss was observed for HA/SPG70/30 compared to the other groups for all experimental periods. Moreover, SEM representative micrographs showed the degradation of the samples with and without immersion. FTIR analysis demonstrated the absorption peaks for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), HA, and SPG. A higher L292 cell viability for control and PMMA was observed compared to HA and HA/SPG 90/10. Also, HA/SPG 70/30 showed higher cell viability compared to HA and HA/SPG 90/10 on days 3 and 7 days of culture. Furthermore, HA showed a significant lower MC3T3 cell viability compared to control and HA/SPG 70/30 on day 3 and no significant difference was observed between the composites in the last experimental period. Based on our investigations, it can be concluded that the mentioned composites were successfully obtained, presenting improved biological properties, especially the one mimicking the composition of bone (with 70% of HA and 30% of SPG). Consequently, these data highlight the potential of the introduction of SPG into HA to improve the performance of the graft for bone regeneration applications. Further long-term studies should be carried out to provide additional information concerning the late stages of material degradation and bone healing in the presence of HA/SPG.

ABSTRACT

Wound healing is a complex biological process with specific phases. Photobiomodulation (PBM) decreases the inflammatory infiltrate, stimulating fibroblast proliferation and angiogenesis, and therefore, is indicated for wound healing. Vitamin A is used to reverse the inhibitory effects on wound healing and accelerate the healthy granulation tissue. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of topical vitamin A and PBM (GaAlAs) in inflammatory phase of cutaneous wounds. Forty Wistar male rats were separated into four groups: (1) control (CG); (2) laser group (LG) GaAlAs, 670 nm, 30 mW, energy per point of 0.9 J, radiating by 1 point in 30 s; (3) vitamin A group (VitAG); and (4) laser group plus vitamin A (LG + VitAG). Wounds were surgically made by a punch biopsy with 10 mm of diameter on the back of the animals and all treatments were started according to the experiment. The treatments were administered for four consecutive days and biopsy was performed on day 4. We performed both H&E and immunohistochemistry analysis. The results were compared between groups by one-way analysis of variance ANOVA test with post hoc Tukey (p < 0.05). Inflammatory infiltrate increased significantly in LG compared to CG and VitAG (p < 0.05). Regarding angiogenesis, VEGF expression was increased significantly in LG and LG + VitAG groups, p < 0.01. The results indicate that proposed treatments were effective on the healing process improved by LG and LG + VitAG. We show that laser plus vitamin A enhances healing by reducing the wound area and may have potential application for clinical management of cutaneous wounds.

OBJECTIVES: The healing process of cutaneous lesions is considered a complex event divided into distinct and overlapping phases, which responds satisfactorily to photobiomodulation (PBM). PBM is indicated as a therapeutic resource capable of assisting tissue repair. The present study aimed to analyze the kinetics of cutaneous wounds healing process after application of the GaAlAs laser for treating wounds on the dorsum of rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of UFSCar. The animals were divided into 2 groups (n = 10); control group (CG) used 0.9% saline solution and the laser group (LG) used GaAlAs, 670 nm continuous pulse, 30 mW power, 14.28 J/cm2 energy density, irradiating 1 point per wound for 30s, totaling 15 consecutive days of treatment. Samples were collected on the 4th, 11th and 16th days for histological analysis of HE, Picrosirius-Red, immunohistochemistry (Collagen1, TNF-α, VEGF). Statistical analyzes used the one-way ANOVA test for intra and inter group evaluations, and the Tukey post-test. Level of significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The histopathological analysis (HE) showed a statistically significant difference for lower values of inflammatory infiltrate in LG versus CG on the 16th day; and for the increase of collagen in the 11th and 16th days of treatment. There was a statistically significant difference in the increase of VEGF on the 11th day for LG; decrease of TNF-α on the 4th and 11th day for LG, and increase of collagen type 1 on the 4th and 16th days for LG. The birefringence analysis of the percentage of collagen fibers presented on the 11th day of treatment revealed a greater quantity and significant statistical difference. Collagen fibers showed improved organization and arrangement on the 11th day for LG. CONCLUSION: Our results show that PBM is effective in helping the kinetics of the cutaneous wound healing process in rats and promotes the necessary stimuli for the satisfactory evolution of healing process, ultimately leading to structurally desirable tissue.

ABSTRACT

Foram avaliados os efeitos tóxicos do hormônio 17β-estradiol (E2) livre e complexado à β-ciclodextrina (CD) sobre o comportamento e a fisiologia de tilápia (Oreochromis niloticus). Os peixes foram observados por 30 dias, em dois estágios do desenvolvimento (alevino e juvenil), pelo método ad libitum, para a confecção de um etograma. Posteriormente, juvenis foram divididos em três grupos: controle e expostos ao E2 (10ng/L) livre e complexado à β-ciclodextrina (β-CD:E2) por 90 dias. Foram avaliados o comportamento pelo método de varredura instantânea, o consumo de ração, o ganho de peso e a mortalidade em diferentes intervalos. Os alevinos e os juvenis apresentaram frequências de exibição comportamentais diferentes (P<0,05) nos eventos: Afastar (4,7±1,3 e 3,6±0,6%) e Ondulação de repulsão (2,3±0,9 e 1,3±1,0%). Os juvenis expostos ao complexo β-CD:E2 apresentaram aumento (P<0,05) na exibição dos comportamentos agressivos, como Afastar, Ataque caudal, Confronto prolongado, Perseguição, Fuga, e menor mortalidade, quando comparados ao grupo exposto ao E2 livre e controle. Pode-se concluir que a complexação do E2 com a β-CD alterou a toxicidade do E2, pois promoveu um aumento na frequência de exibição dos comportamentos agressivos e interferiu na mortalidade dos animais.(AU)


Toxic effects of free and complexed 17β-estradiol (E2) hormone into β-cyclodextrin (CD) on the behavior and physiology of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were evaluated. The fish were observed for 30 days in two stages of development (fingerling and juvenile) by the ad libitum method to make an ethogram. After this, juveniles were divided into three groups: control and exposed to free E2 (10ng/L) and complexed into β-cyclodextrin (β-CD:E2) for 90 days. The behavior was evaluated through scan sampling method, feed intake, body mass and mortality at different intervals. The fingerlings and juveniles showed behavioral patterns with different display frequencies (P<0.05) for events: Move Away (4.7±1.3 and 3.6±0.6%) and Waving Repulsion (2.3±0.9 and 1.3±1.0%). The juveniles exposed to β-CD:E2 complex showed a significant increase (P<0.05) in the frequency of display of aggressive behaviors as Move Away, Caudal Attack, Clash Extended, Chase, Escape and decrease of mortality when compared to group exposed to free E2 and control. In conclusion, complexation of E2 into β-CD modified E2 toxicity, because it promoted an increase in the frequency of display of aggressive behaviors and it affected the mortality of animals.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Oncolytic virotherapy is a novel strategy for treatment of cancer in humans and companion animals as well. Canine distemper virus (CDV), a paramyxovirus, has proven to be oncolytic through induction of apoptosis in canine-derived tumour cells, yet the mechanism behind this inhibitory action is poorly understood. In this study, three human mammary tumour cell lines and one canine-derived adenofibrosarcoma cell line were tested regarding to their susceptibility to CDV infection, cell proliferation, apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential and expression of tumour necrosis factor-alpha-induced protein 8 (TNFAIP8). CDV replication-induced cytopathic effect, decrease of cell proliferation rates, and >45% of infected cells were considered death and/or under late apoptosis/necrosis. TNFAIP8 and CDVM gene expression were positively correlated in all cell lines. In addition, mitochondrial membrane depolarization was associated with increase in virus titres (p < 0.005). Thus, these results strongly suggest that both human and canine mammary tumour cells are potential candidates for studies concerning CDV-induced cancer therapy.

ABSTRACT

In this study, derived complex carcinoma (CC) and simple carcinoma (SC) cell lines were established and cultured under two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) conditions. The 3D was performed in six-well AlgiMatrix™ (LifeTechnologies®, Carlsbad, CA, USA) scaffolds, resulting in spheroids sized 50-125 µm for CC and 175-200 µm for SC. Cell viability was demonstrated up to 14 days for both models. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was expressed in CC and SC in both systems. However, higher mRNA and protein levels were observed in SC 2D and 3D systems when compared with CC (P < 0.005). The connective tissue modulators, metalloproteinases-1, -2, -9 and -13 (MMPs), relaxin receptors 1 and 2 (RXR1 and RXR2) and E-cadherin (CDH1) were quantitated. All were upregulated similarly when canine mammary tumour (CMT)-derived cell lines were cultured under 3D AlgiMatrix, except CDH1 that was downregulated (P < 0.005). These results are promising towards the used of 3D system to increase a high throughput in vitro canine tumour model.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To evaluate the immunoexpression of tryptase, MMP-9 and MMP-13 in periapical lesions, correlating them with the type of lesion, intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate and thickness of the epithelial lining. METHODOLOGY: Twenty periapical granulomas (PGs), twenty radicular cysts (RCs) and twenty residual radicular cysts (RRCs) were submitted to immunohistochemical analysis using antitryptase, anti-MMP-9 and anti-MMP-13 antibodies. Immunoexpression of MMP-9 and MMP-13 was quantitatively evaluated both in the connective tissue of all lesions and in the epithelial lining of RCs and RRCs. Tryptase-positive mast cells were counted only in the connective tissue. The data were analysed using Kruskal-Wallis and Fisher's exact tests, as well as Spearman's correlation test (P < 0.05). RESULTS: In comparison with RCs and RRCs, PGs exhibited higher immunoexpression of tryptase, MMP-9 and MMP-13 (P = 0.002, P = < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). In comparison with lesions with inflammatory infiltrates grades I and II, lesions with inflammatory infiltrate grade III had higher median percentages of MMP-13-positive cells (P = 0.003) and a tendency for higher expression of MMP-9 (P = 0.059). No significant difference was observed between the expression of the studied markers and epithelial thickness (P > 0.05). There were positive correlations between the number of tryptase-positive mast cells and the immunoexpression of MMP-9, as well as between the immunoexpression of MMP-9 and MMP-13. CONCLUSION: A larger number of tryptase-positive mast cells and greater enzymatic activity of MMP-9 and MMP-13 were found in PGs compared to RCs and RRCs. These findings are a characteristic of the dynamics of periapical diseases.

AIM: To evaluate and compare the immunoexpression of tryptase in samples of periapical granulomas (PGs) and radicular cysts (RCs) correlating it with the type of lesion, localization, intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate and thickness of the cystic epithelial lining, in order to gain insight into the phlogistic role of these cells in the lesions studied. METHODOLOGY: Twenty-five PGs and twenty-five RCs obtained from human teeth without endodontic treatment were submitted to morphological and immunohistochemical analysis using anti-tryptase antibody. Mast cells were identified and counted in three regions: intra-epithelial, central/superficial and deep portions. The data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U-test (P < 0.05). RESULTS: In comparison with RCs, PGs exhibited higher immunoexpression of tryptase-positive mast cells located in both central/superficial and deep regions (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). When considering the total number of mast cells and disregarding the location, the number of tryptase-positive mast cells increased gradually from RCs to PGs (P < 0.001). Lesions with inflammatory infiltrate grade III had greater number of tryptase-positive mast cells located in both central/superficial and deep regions than lesions with inflammatory infiltrates grade II (P = 0.045 and P = 0.025). When the location was ignored, the lesions with inflammatory infiltrate grade III also exhibited higher immunostaining of tryptase-positive mast cells (P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Tryptase-positive mast cells were present in chronic periapical lesions in a larger number in periapical granulomas than in radicular cysts, in both central/superficial and deep regions.

ABSTRACT

Ten-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) was recently introduced into the Brazilian Immunization Programme. Secondary data are used as a measurement of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) burden, but their completeness and reliability need to be ascertained. We performed probabilistic linkage between hospital primary data from active prospective population-based surveillance (APS) and hospital secondary data from the Hospital Information System administrative database of the National Unified Health System (SIH-SUS). Children aged 2-23 months hospitalized during January-December 2012 were identified. Incidence rates of hospitalized CAP were estimated. Agreement of case identification was measured by kappa index. A total of 1639 (26%) CAP cases were identified in APS and 1714 (35%) in SIH-SUS. Of these 3353 records, 1127 CAP cases were present in both databases. Kappa on CAP case identification was 0·72 (95% confidence interval 0·69-0·75). CAP hospitalization incidence using administrative (5285/100 000) and hospital (5054/100 000) primary data were similar (P = 0·184). Our findings suggest that administrative databases of hospitalizations are reliable sources to assess PCV10 impact in time-series analyses.

ABSTRACT

Ectopic ureters are rarely observed in cats. Therefore, for a better chance of success in the corrective surgical procedure and survival of the patient, diagnosis should be confirmed early. This report illustrates the occurrence of bilateral ectopic ureters in a seven month old Maine Coon cat and describes the medical and surgical management adopted for correction of the abnormality.


A ectopia dos ureteres é raramente observada em gatos. Assim, para aumentar as chances de sucesso do procedimento cirúrgico corretivo e promover a sobrevivência, o diagnóstico deve ser firmado precocemente. O relato em tela ilustra a ocorrência de ureter ectópico bilateral em uma gata Maine Coon, de sete meses, e descrevem-se as manobras médico-cirúrgicas adotadas na correção dessa anormalidade.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate bone healing in an experimental radial ostectomy in dogs treated with autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP), through histological, densitometric, radiographic studies, as well as expression of growth factors in the ostectomy gap. METHODS: Twenty-one dogs were randomly divided into either a control or a PRP group. All underwent unilateral ostectomy of the radius to generate a gap of 2.0 mm, that was stabilized with external skeletal fixation. The ostectomy gap was either filled with PRP or left empty as a control. The radiographic and densitometric studies were performed after surgery, then at intervals until 60 days during the post-surgery period. Histological and immunohistochemical evaluations were performed at seven or 60 days post-surgery. Analyses were performed using a statistical analysis system, and the level of significance was set at p <0.05. RESULTS: The median radiographic healing score in the PRP group increased significantly between day 0 and day 60. Furthermore, at 60 days, the median healing score and the proportion of healed ostectomies in the control group (score 1; 1/6 healed) and the PRP group (score 5; 4/5 healed) were significantly different. There were differences between groups in radiographic and densitometric values at days 45 and 60. The histological evaluation showed advanced bone healing at 60 days in the PRP group and signs of delayed union in the control group. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Platelet-rich plasma can be used as an adjuvant therapy because it may promote better bone healing of a radial ostectomy treated with external skeletal fixation in dogs.

ABSTRACT

Canine transmissible venereal tumour (CTVT) is a neoplasm transmitted among healthy dogs by direct contact with injured skin and/or mucous tissue. This study aimed to identify the TP53 gene, messenger RNA (mRNA) as well as the expression of p53, Bcl-2 and p63 proteins in histological sections of 13 CTVT samples at different stages of evolution. The in situ hybridization (ISH) and in situ reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays were used, which showed the DNA homologous to TP53 and its respective mRNA in 92.3% of the samples. We detected p53, p63 and Bcl-2 proteins in most of the cell samples in different grades of intensity. In addition, 46% of the samples were in the progressive and 54% in the regression phase. This is the first description of these proteins and a detailed study of their role in CTVT cells needs to be addressed in or to verify how these cells undergo apoptosis.

ABSTRACT

Behavioral sensitization to the stimulating effect of ethanol (EtOH) or other drugs, which can be observed in mice as an increase in locomotor activity after repeated administration, has been associated with neuroadaptations within the dopaminergic mesolimbic pathway. In the nucleus accumbens (NAc), an afferent region of the mesolimbic pathway, dopamine (DA) release can be modulated by serotonergic 2C receptors (5-HT2CR). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the function of 5-HT2CR in the expression of EtOH-induced behavioral sensitization in Albino Swiss mice with various levels of sensitization to EtOH. In the four experiments that we performed, the mice were given saline or 2.2 g/kg EtOH daily for 21 days. Based on their locomotion on day 21, the EtOH-pretreated mice were assigned to one of two groups, highly sensitized or weakly sensitized to the stimulating effect of EtOH. In each experiment, 2 weeks after the 21-day treatment (withdrawal period), the mice were submitted to four pharmacological challenges of two drug treatments each. The mice in experiments 1 and 2 received two i.p. injections, whereas the mice in experiments 3 and 4 received an intra-NAc administration followed by an i.p. injection. The challenges were: saline+saline; saline+EtOH; SB-242084 (a 5-HT2CR antagonist; 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg i.p. or 1.0 or 2.0 µg/side intra-NAc)+EtOH; and SB-242084 (0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg i.p. or 1.0 or 2.0 µg/side intra-NAc)+saline. At all tested doses, i.p. administration of SB-242084 did not affect the stimulating effect of EtOH in the highly sensitized mice. However, when delivered by intra-NAc administration, SB-242084 reduced (at 1.0 µg/side) or completely blocked (at 2.0 µg/side) the expression of EtOH-induced behavioral sensitization in the highly sensitized mice. These findings suggest that the expression of behavioral sensitization to the stimulating effect of EtOH depends on accumbal 5-HT2CR activity.

ABSTRACT

Desenvolveu-se uma técnica de bloqueio peribulbar comparando-a à técnica de anestesia oftálmica com bloqueio neuromuscular parcial em cães submetidos à facectomia extracapsular. Doze cães, de diferentes raças, foram alocados em dois grupos (G1 e G2) e anestesiados com acepromazina (0,05mg/kg, IV) e propofol (5mg/kg, IV) e mantidos com isofluorano sob ventilação espontânea. Os cães do G1 receberam o bloqueio peribulbar com ropivacaína 0,75 por cento, e os do G2 o bloqueio neuromuscular parcial com brometo de pancurônio (0,01mg/kg, IV). Utilizaram-se, como parâmetros comparativos, escores de posicionamento do globo ocular, controle do reflexo oculocardíaco e pressão intraocular (mmHg). Foi possível propor uma técnica eficaz para cães baseando-se na técnica de bloqueio peribulbar posterior realizada no homem. Em ambos os grupos, o globo ocular permaneceu centralizado. Não ocorreram alterações eletrocardiográficas atribuídas ao reflexo oculocardíaco. Houve redução significativa da pressão intraocular em G1 após o bloqueio (10,7±0,6 e 14,7±0,6). Conclui-se que o bloqueio peribulbar proporcionou condições cirúrgicas apropriadas para a realização da facectomia, com a vantagem de promover bloqueio sensitivo do olho.


A peribulbar block technique was developed and its clinical efficacy was compared with neuromuscular blockade in dogs undergoing cataract surgery. Twelve dogs of different breeds were randomly and equally allocated in two groups. After given acepromazine (0.05mg/kg, IV), anesthesia was induced with propofol (5mg/kg, IV) and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen during spontaneous breathing. A peribulbar block with 0.75 percent ropivacaine was performed in G1 dogs while partial neuromuscular blockade with pancuronium (0.01mg/kg IV) was provided in G2 dogs. Globe position scores, oculocardiac reflex, and intra-ocular pressure (mmHg) were evaluated at pre-defined intervals during surgery. Peribulbar blocks were successful performed according to posterior peribulbar block described in humans. In both groups, the globe was centralized and globe position scores did not differ between groups. The intra-ocular pressure was significantly lower in G1 after the block (10.7±0.6 vs 14.7±0.6). There were no electrocardiographycal changes attributed to the oculocardiac reflex. In conclusion, satisfactory surgical conditions were provided by the peribulbar block. This technique can be used as an alternative to the use of neuromuscular blocking agents in dogs undergoing cataract surgery, with the advantage of providing analgesia of the eye.

ABSTRACT

Magnetic nanoparticles coated with silica have been subjected of extensive,and, in many aspects, also intensive investigations because of their potentialapplication in different technological fields, particularly in biomedicine. This work was conceived and is being carried out in two main parts: (1) synthesis of the ferrimagnetic nanoparticles, specifically magnetite, and (2) coating these particles with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The nanosized magnetite sample was preparedby the reduction–precipitation and the nanomagnetite particles were coated by the sol-gel method, based on the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The so obtained materials were characterized with powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR spectroscopy, saturation magnetization measurements, and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature.

This paper compares the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide when controlled nano-sized magnetite powders are used as catalysts. Two different nano-sized powders and a Fe0/Fe3O4 composite have been used. The nanoparticle samples were synthesized by: (i) a chemical reduction-precipitation method and, (ii) by reduction under H2 atmosphere at 250 degrees C, of a hematite sample previously prepared. The composite, Fe0/Fe3O4, was prepared by thermal controlled reduction of nanoparticles of Fe2O3 obtained from hematite under H2 at 300 degrees C. The samples were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature, and surface area. The catalytic effect was studied in the decomposition reaction of H2O2 by measuring the formation of gaseous O2. The results showed the presence of pure Fe3O4 for nano magnetite samples and Fe0 and Fe3O4 for the composite sample. The average particle sizes of the magnetite, calculated from reflection 311 by using Scherrer equation were about 33 and 10 nm for the samples obtained by hematite reduction and reduction-precipitation, respectively. Kinetic studies of the decomposition of peroxide showed a higher decomposition rate for the hydrogen peroxide reaction when nanoparticles prepared by reduction-precipitation method were used as catalysts. The high catalytic activity associated to nanoparticles is discussed in terms of the high surface area of these samples.
