ABSTRACT

We examined a cohort of 93 cystic fibrosis (CF) male patients who were pancreatic-sufficient (PS-CF; n=40) or pancreatic-insufficient (PI-CF; n = 53). Complex semen examination was performed, including standard semen analysis, quantitative karyological analysis (QKA) of immature germ cells (IGCs), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), biochemical analysis, and sperm DNA fragmentation by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nickend labeling (TUNEL) assay. Azoospermia was diagnosed in 83 (89.2%) patients. The other 10 (10.8%) patients were found to be nonazoospermic and showed various spermatological diagnoses (asthenozoospermia, n = 2; asthenoteratozoospermia, n = 3; oligoasthenozoospermia, n = 1; oligoasthenoteratozoospermia, n = 3; and normozoospermia, n = 1) with no specific morphological abnormalities. Oligospermia was detected in 89.2% azoospermic and 30.0% nonazoospermic patients. Low seminal pH (<7.0) was found in 74 (89.2%) of 83 azoospermic patients. Moderate leukocytospermia (2.0 × 10 6 -2.2 × 10 6 ml -1 ) was revealed in 2.4% azoospermic and 40.0% nonazoospermic semen samples. The signs of partial meiotic arrest at prophase I were found in 4 of 6 nonazoospermic patients examined by QKA of IGCs. The content of fructose and citrate was low in oligospermic and normal in nonoligospermic semen samples. An increased percentage (>30%) of spermatozoa with noncondensed ("immature") chromatin was revealed in 2 of 6 nonazoospermic semen samples analyzed by TEM.

ABSTRACT

We consider the problem of dimensionality reduction of state space in the variational approach to the optimal control problem, in particular, in the reinforcement learning method. The control problem is described by differential algebraic equations consisting of nonlinear differential equations and algebraic constraint equations interconnected with Lagrange multipliers. The proposed method is based on changing the Lagrange multipliers of one subset based on the Lagrange multipliers of another subset. We present examples of the application of the proposed method in robotics and vibration isolation in transport vehicles. The method is implemented in FRUND-a multibody system dynamics software package.

ABSTRACT

Nuclear resonant reflectivity (NRR) from an Fe60Al40 film was measured using synchrotron radiation at several grazing angles near the critical angle of total external reflection. Using laterally resolved measurements after irradiation with 20 keV Ne+ ions of gradually varying fluence of 0-3.0 × 1014 ions cm-2, the progressive creation of the ferromagnetic A2 phase with increasing ion fluence was confirmed. The observed depth selectivity of the method has been explained by application of the standing wave approach. From the time spectra of the nuclear resonant scattering in several reflection directions the depth profiles for different hyperfine fields were extracted. The results show that the highest magnetic hyperfine fields (∼18-23 T) are initially created in the central part of the film and partially at the bottom interface with the SiO2 substrate. The evolution of the ferromagnetic onset, commencing at a fixed depth within the film and propagating towards the interfaces, has been directly observed. At higher fluence (3.0 × 1014 ions cm-2) the depth distribution of the ferromagnetic fractions became more homogeneous across the film depth, in accordance with previous results.

ABSTRACT

A comprehensive study of the polyaniline influence on mineral scaling on the surface of the heterogeneous MK-40 sulfocationite membrane under electrodialysis has been conducted. Current-voltage curves and chronopotentiograms have been obtained and analyzed for the pristine MK-40 membrane and the MK-40 membrane which is surface-modified by polyaniline. The study of the electrochemical behavior of membranes has been accompanied by the simultaneous control of the pH of the solution outcoming from the desalination compartment. The mixture of Na2CO3, KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 is used as a model salt solution. Two limiting states are observed on the current-voltage curve of the surface-modified membrane. There is the first pseudo-limiting state in the range of small values of the potential drop. The second limiting current is comparable with that of the limiting current for the pristine membrane. It is shown that chronopotentiometry cannot be used as a self-sufficient method for membrane scaling identification on the surface-modified membrane at high currents. A mineral scale on the surfaces of the studied membranes has been found by scanning electron microscopy. The amount of precipitate is higher in the case of the surface-modified membrane compared with the pristine one.

ABSTRACT

Mössbauer reflectivity spectra and nuclear resonance reflectivity (NRR) curves have been measured using the Synchrotron Mössbauer Source (SMS) for a [57Fe/Cr]30 periodic multilayer, characterized by the antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling between adjacent 57Fe layers. Specific features of the Mössbauer reflectivity spectra measured with π-polarized radiation of the SMS near the critical angle and at the `magnetic' maximum on the NRR curve are analyzed. The variation of the ratio of lines in the Mössbauer reflectivity spectra and the change of the intensity of the `magnetic' maximum under an applied external field has been used to reveal the transformation of the magnetic alignment in the investigated multilayer.

ABSTRACT

Oxygen coordination of transition metals is a key for functional properties of transition-metal oxides, because hybridization of transition-metal d and oxygen p orbitals determines correlations between charges, spins and lattices. Strain often modifies the oxygen coordination environment and affects such correlations in the oxides, resulting in the emergence of unusual properties and, in some cases, fascinating behaviors. While these strain effects have been studied in many of the fully-oxygenated oxides, such as ABO3 perovskites, those in oxygen-deficient oxides consisting of various oxygen coordination environments like tetrahedra and pyramids as well as octahedra remain unexplored. Here we report on the discovery of a strain-induced significant increase, by 550 K, in the metal-insulator transition temperature of an oxygen-deficient Fe oxide epitaxial thin film. The observed transition at 620 K is ascribed to charge disproportionation of Fe(3.66+) into Fe(4+) and Fe(3+), associated with oxygen-vacancy ordering. The significant increase in the metal-insulator transition temperature, from 70 K in the bulk material, demonstrates that epitaxial growth of oxygen-deficient oxides under substrate-induced strain is a promising route for exploring novel functionality.

ABSTRACT

Environmental contamination with various insecticides remains an actual problem. In this connection, investigation of toxicologic hazard of insecticides is essential. In this work, effects of the type II pyrethroids (fenvalerate, cypermethrin and deltamethrin) on Daphnia magna were determined. It was found for the first time that not only low doses (up to 10(-12) M) of the above-mentioned chemicals but also extremely low doses (up to 10(-29) M) showed toxicological action on the invertebrates both at optimal (23 +/- 0.5 degrees C) and increased (28 +/- 0.5 degrees C) temperature. At higher temperature, toxic effects were more pronounced.
