ABSTRACT

Those involved in preparing the next generation of nurse scientists face numerous challenges, including but not limited to: relatively older age at completion of doctoral studies, insufficient funding for full-time PhD students in nursing, inadequate funding for nursing research, and the limited number of well-funded mentors in nursing doctoral programs. These issues have limited the number of students enrolled in PhD nursing programs and graduates to supply the research faculty of the future and generate nursing science. This phenomenon persists despite numerous calls to increase the number of PhD doctoral students and graduates and expedite the PhD process without compromising educational integrity. This article describes the BSN-to-PhD Pathway and the Accelerated (3 year) Pathway to the nursing PhD at an established research doctoral program that required a shift in the approach to student recruitment, curriculum development, and timely progression. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Empowerment, defined as economic opportunity that lessens dependence, is a unique concept that may affect a woman's sexual decision making. In this analysis taken from a larger statewide study, 91 HIV-positive African-American women were administered a survey to assess factors of empowerment in association with sexual choices. Age, incarceration history, and alcohol use were associated with bartering with sex. Incarceration history and alcohol use were associated with having unprotected sex with someone of unknown serostatus.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a web-based education program tailored to patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) who may be experiencing pain, and to investigate, via the website, the pain experiences of those patients by studying their pain reports, disability, and coping strategies. METHOD: This study was a cross-sectional survey of CF patients. Recruitment efforts focused on informing patients of the website and research study. A sample of 18 participants was recruited. Three separate questionnaires were employed: a demographic questionnaire, the Pain Disability Index, and the Pain Response Inventory. FINDINGS: Approximately half of the sample reported experiencing daily pain episodes lasting two hours or less. The average intensity of a pain episode was reported to be in the moderate range. Participants reported pain disability highest in areas of recreation, occupation, and social activities. The most commonly used coping strategies included active and accommodative coping techniques such as problem solving, acceptance, and self-encouragement. CONCLUSION: Pain management is clearly a problem for some young adults with CF. This study provided information about the areas of disability caused by pain, as well as common coping strategies used by patients. The findings of this study provide direction for the future of pain management in CF patients.
