ABSTRACT

In the presented study, films from tetragonal Li7La3Zr2O12 were obtained by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) for the first time. To obtain a continuous and homogeneous coating on Ni and Ti substrates, iodine was added to the Li7La3Zr2O12 suspension. The EPD regime was developed to carry out the stable process of deposition. The influence of annealing temperature on phase composition, microstructure, and conductivity of membranes obtained was studied. It was established that the phase transition from tetragonal to low-temperature cubic modification of solid electrolyte was observed after its heat treatment at 400 °C. This phase transition was also confirmed by high-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis of Li7La3Zr2O12 powder. Increasing the annealing temperature leads to the formation of additional phases in the form of fibers and their growth from 32 (dried film) to 104 µm (annealed at 500 °C). The formation of this phase occurred due to the chemical reaction of Li7La3Zr2O12 films obtained by electrophoretic deposition with air components during heat treatment. The total conductivity of Li7La3Zr2O12 films obtained has values of ~10-10 and ~10-7 S cm-1 at 100 and 200 °C, respectively. The method of EPD can be used to obtain solid electrolyte membranes based on Li7La3Zr2O12 for all-solid-state batteries.

ABSTRACT

Modifying lithium niobate cation composition improves not only the functional properties of the acousto- and optoelectronic materials as well as ferroelectrics but elevates the protonic transfer in LiNbO3-based electrolytes of the solid oxide electrochemical devices. Molten chlorides and other thermally stable salts are not considered practically as the precursors to synthesize and modify oxide compounds. This article presents and discusses the results of an experimental study of the full or partial heterovalent substitution of lithium ion in nanosized LiNbO3 powders and in the surface layer of LiNbO3 single crystal using molten salt mixtures containing calcium, lead, and rare-earth metals (REM) chlorides as the precursors. The special features of heterovalent ion exchange in chloride melts are revealed such as hetero-epitaxial cation exchange at the interface PbCl2-containing melt/lithium niobate single crystal; the formation of Li(1−x) Ca(x/2)V(x/2)Li+ NbO3 solid solutions with cation vacancies as an intermediate product of the reaction of heterovalent substitution of lithium ion by calcium in LiNbO3 powders; the formation of lanthanide orthoniobates with a tetragonal crystal structure such as scheelite as the result of lithium niobate interaction with trichlorides of rare-earth elements. It is shown that the fundamental properties of ion-modifiers (ion radius, nominal charge), temperature, and duration of isothermal treatment determine the products' chemical composition and the rate of heterovalent substitution of Li+-ion in lithium niobate.

ABSTRACT

Li6-xZr2-xAxO7 (A = Nb; Ta) system with 0 < x < 0.30 is synthesized by glycine-nitrate method. Boundaries of solid solutions based on monoclinic Li6Zr2O7 are determined; temperature (200-600 °C) and concentration dependences of conductivity are investigated. It is shown that monoclinic Li6Zr2O7 exhibits better transport properties compared to its triclinic modification. Li5.8Zr1.8Nb(Ta)0.2O7 solid solutions have a higher lithium-cation conductivity at 300 °C compared to solid electrolytes based on other lithium zirconates due the "open" structure of monoclinic Li6Zr2O7 and a high solubility of the doping cations.

ABSTRACT

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries raise the issue of high resistance at the interface between solid electrolyte and electrode materials that needs to be addressed. The article investigates the effect of a low-melting Li3BO3 additive introduced into LiCoO2- and Li4Ti5O12-based composite electrodes on the interface resistance with a Li7La3Zr2O12 solid electrolyte. According to DSC analysis, interaction in the studied mixtures with Li3BO3 begins at 768 and 725 °C for LiCoO2 and Li4Ti5O12, respectively. The resistance of half-cells with different contents of Li3BO3 additive after heating at 700 and 720 °C was studied by impedance spectroscopy in the temperature range of 25-340 °C. It was established that the introduction of 5 wt% Li3BO3 into LiCoO2 and heat treatment at 720 °C led to the greatest decrease in the interface resistance from 260 to 40 Ω cm2 at 300 °C in comparison with pure LiCoO2. An SEM study demonstrated that the addition of the low-melting component to electrode mass gave better contact with ceramics. It was shown that an increase in the annealing temperature of unmodified cells with Li4Ti5O12 led to a decrease in the interface resistance. It was found that the interface resistance between composite anodes and solid electrolyte had lower values compared to Li4Ti5O12|Li7La3Zr2O12 half-cells. It was established that the resistance of cells with the Li4Ti5O12/Li3BO3 composite anode annealed at 720 °C decreased from 97.2 (x = 0) to 7.0 kΩ cm2 (x = 5 wt% Li3BO3) at 150 °C.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Periprosthetic fractures are one of the most serious complications after hip replacement. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of surgical treatment of periprosthetic femoral fractures following total hip arthroplasty using treatment algorithm of the Vancouver classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty six periprosthetic femoral fractures operated on during the period December 2004-September 2013 were followed-up retrospectively. There were 40 women and 16 men with mean age at the time of surgery 64.7 years (41-88 years). The mean follow-up for the group was 5 years (range, 1-10 years). Periprosthetic fractures were classified according to the Vancouver classification. The clinical evaluation was performed with the Harris hip score, the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and Short Form 8 (SF-8). Bone healing, implant survival, pain, function and complications were recorded. Bone healing and implant stability were evaluated clinically and on plain radiographs. RESULTS: Uneventful bone healing was achieved in 52 cases. In two fractures (one type B1, one type C) nonunion and plate failure occurred. Two cemented stems were revised for aseptic loosening 6.5 and 7 years after fracture fixation. Uncontrollable prosthesis infection and sepsis in a rheumatoid (immunocompromised) patient required disarticulation of the involved extremity. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Periprosthetic femoral fractures are difficult to treat and require complex treatment approach according to risk assessment, fracture type, implant stability, bone stock and medical status of the patient. Using a treatment protocol of the Vancouver classification we obtained satisfactory outcome.
