ABSTRACT

The mechanism of fluid migration in porous networks continues to attract great interest. Darcy's law (phenomenological continuum theory), which is often used to describe macroscopically fluid flow through a porous material, is thought to fail in nano-channels. Transport through heterogeneous and anisotropic systems, characterized by a broad distribution of pores, occurs via a contribution of different transport mechanisms, all of which need to be accounted for. The situation is likely more complicated when immiscible fluid mixtures are present. To generalize the study of fluid transport through a porous network, we developed a stochastic kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) model. In our lattice model, the pore network is represented as a set of connected finite volumes (voxels), and transport is simulated as a random walk of molecules, which "hop" from voxel to voxel. We simulated fluid transport along an effectively 1D pore and we compared the results to those expected by solving analytically the diffusion equation. The KMC model was then implemented to quantify the transport of methane through hydrated micropores, in which case atomistic molecular dynamic simulation results were reproduced. The model was then used to study flow through pore networks, where it was able to quantify the effect of the pore length and the effect of the network's connectivity. The results are consistent with experiments but also provide additional physical insights. Extension of the model will be useful to better understand fluid transport in shale rocks.

ABSTRACT

The hydrothermal growth of crystalline ß-V2O5 microstructures was performed on fluorine doped tin dioxide glass substrates using oxalic acid to adjust the pH of the solution for various deposition periods. It was observed that the sample grown for 48 h at pH 2 exhibited the best electrochemical response in terms of the highest specific charge and capacitance, being 772 C g(-1) and 386 F g(-1) respectively. The importance of achieving high crystalline quality samples and increased surface area toward the improvement of the electrochemical performance of ß-V2O5 is highlighted.

ABSTRACT

Stroke represents one of the most important menaces to public health. A number of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors have been identified and studied in detail; among those, obesity, the new world epidemic, seems to be one of the most important in terms of prevention. The discovery of the secretory role of the adipose tissue and of adipokines has opened new fields of research. A number of studies have been published on their relation to cardiovascular risk and the potential of using them as prevention markers. In the present review the physiology of leptin, adiponectin and resistin is described and their role in the pathogenesis of stroke is examined.

ABSTRACT

The paper deals with the toxicity of a surfactant-based oil dispersant to the ATPase activities of two naupliar stages of Artemia (instar I & II). Both instars were exposed to sub-lethal and lethal concentrations derived from acute toxicity data. The chosen concentrations were near to LOECs and NOECs. An eightfold difference indicated between the instars was instar-exposure time dependent. The most prominent effects were the inhibition and the stimulation of Na+/K+-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase activities, respectively. The cause of these effects was related to the dispersant components, the surfactants. The pattern stimulation/inhibition of Mg2+-ATPase and Na+/K+-ATPase activities could be used to indicate toxic stress by surfactant-based oil dispersants since previous studies with other contaminants have shown different ATPase activity patterns.

ABSTRACT

The survival, growth, and biochemical composition (protein, total lipid, total carbohydrate, free reducing sugars, RNA, DNA) of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, exposed to low sublethal concentrations of cadmium throughout its life cycle (beginning with 5-day-old juveniles) was studied. The purpose was to get some insight on the cause of metal toxic effects and evaluate the utility of monitoring levels of biomolecules as bioindicators of chronic toxicant effects on fish. The LC50 (48 h) of cadmium for 5-day-old Poecilia was 56.77 mg/L. The median lethal times (LT50) of Poecilia exposed to low cadmium concentrations (0.5-5 mg/L) ranged from 7.65 to 72.51 days, and could be accurately predicted by the mortality observed after 20 days of exposure. The whole-body dry weight increase of cadmium-exposed guppies presented a decline from that of the controls. These declines were statistically significant after 20 days of exposure to concentrations higher than 1 mg/L and after 30 days to concentrations higher than 0.5 mg/L. The percentage content in RNA was the only variable from the studied macrobiomolecules that significantly decreased when guppies were exposed to Cd concentrations higher than 0.5 mg/L for 30 days. The same trend was apparent in the ratio RNA/DNA. However, the ratio protein/RNA/DNA significantly increased after 10 days of growth to 1.5 mg/L and after 20 days to concentrations higher than 0.5 mg/L, thus having a predictive value for early-life history stages of Poecilia exposed to Cd.
