ABSTRACT

LAY ABSTRACT: To promote the full inclusion of autistic people, we must change the knowledge and attitudes of non-autistic individuals. Unfortunately, access to autism information and support remains limited in Brazil, and stigma is also common. Brazilian researchers reached out to a researcher in the United States to co-develop Brazilian surveys to measure autism stigma and knowledge. Together, they made Brazilian versions of stigma and knowledge surveys which autistic people in the United States had helped make. They also adapted an online autism training used in other countries with help from three Brazilian autistic people and the mother of an autistic child. They used the new measures to see if the autism training improved autism stigma and knowledge among Brazilians. The surveys, called EARPA and ECAT in Brazil, were translated into Portuguese in a previous study. In the first study in this article, 532 Brazilians completed the stigma measure and 510 completed the knowledge measure. The researchers used exploratory graph analysis, which uses the connections between items in a survey to understand which items belong together. Seventy-nine Brazilians participated in the training. They were mostly white, female university students. The EGA showed that the stigma survey measured one big idea while the knowledge survey measured four ideas: diagnosis/cause; socio-communicative development; stimming and special interests; and autism in adulthood. Both scales are promising and may be helpful in future Brazilian and cross-cultural studies about autism. Participants reported more knowledge and less stigma after the autism training, which has been found in other countries too.

RESUMO Os movimentos de pessoas com Transtorno do Espectro Autista (TEA) e de seus familiares vêm aumentando e ganhando força no Brasil e no mundo. O movimento da neurodiversidade entende que o autismo é parte da personalidade da pessoa, não se tratando de uma doença que deve ser curada. O estudo aborda o movimento da neurodiversidade no contexto do TEA, discutindo as suas relações com as evidências cientificas. A partir de um estudo teórico, vimos que o modelo médico parece ser ainda o mais adotado em pesquisas brasileiras sobre a inclusão, podendo influenciar no estigma e nas visões negativas e distorcidas sobre as diferenças apresentadas pelas pessoas com TEA. Entre outros aspectos, demarca-se a importância da participação de pessoas com TEA e/ou de seus familiares no desenvolvimento de pesquisas relacionadas a elas, buscando a promoção de práticas científicas e acadêmicas que escutem, respeitem e se inspirem na neurodiversidade.


RESUMEN Los movimientos de personas con Trastorno del Espectro Autista (TEA) y de sus familiares vienen aumentando y ganando fuerza en Brasil y en el mundo. El movimiento de la neurodiversidad entiende que el autismo forma parte de la personalidad de la persona, no tratándose de una enfermedad que debe ser sanada El estudio aborda el movimiento de la neurodiversidad en el contexto del TEA, discutiéndose sus relaciones con las evidencias científicas. A partir de un estudio teórico, se percibe que el modelo médico parece ser aun el más adoptado en investigaciones brasileñas sobre la inclusión, pudiendo influenciar en el estigma y en las visiones negativas y distorsionadas sobre las diferencias presentadas por las personas con TEA. Entre otros aspectos, se demarca la importancia de la participación de personas con TEA y/o de sus familiares en el desarrollo de investigaciones relacionadas a ellas, buscando la promoción de prácticas científicas y académicas que escuchen, respeten y se inspiren en la neurodiversidad.


ABSTRACT Movements of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families have been increasing and gaining strength in Brazil and worldwide. The neurodiversity movement understands that autism is part of a person's personality, not a disease that must be cured. The study addresses the neurodiversity movement in the context of ASD, discussing its relations with scientific evidence. From a theoretical study, we saw that the medical model still seems to be the most adopted in Brazilian research about inclusion, which may influence stigma and negative and distorted views about the differences presented by people with ASD. Among other aspects, the importance of the participation of people with ASD and/or their family members in the development of research related to them is highlighted, seeking to promote scientific and academic practices that listen, respect and be inspired by neurodiversity.

Abstract Cognitive interviews can provide validity evidence for instruments based on item response processes; however, use of focus groups still prevails in Brazilian literature. Moreover, semantic analysis has only been considered when searching for validity evidence based on test content. This paper presents a proposal for qualitative data analysis based on cognitive interviewing, thus providing researchers with a protocol that enables best practices in carrying out this technique, and consolidating it in the Brazilian literature as an option to search for validity evidence based on item response processes. To conclude, we present some criticisms regarding current procedures for validity evidence based on test content and discuss some possibilities.


Resumo As entrevistas cognitivas podem fornecer evidências de validade para os instrumentos com base no processo de resposta aos itens. Na literatura brasileira, entretanto, o uso de grupos focais ainda prevalece. Além disso, a análise semântica tem sido considerada apenas na busca de evidências de validade baseada no conteúdo do teste. Esse manuscrito apresenta uma proposta para análise de dados qualitativos de entrevistas cognitivas. O objetivo é fornecer aos pesquisadores um protocolo que viabiliza as melhores práticas na realização desta técnica, consolidando-a na literatura brasileira como uma opção para busca de evidência de validade baseada no processo de resposta dos itens. Por fim, são apresentadas algumas críticas em relação aos atuais procedimentos de busca de evidências de validade baseadas no conteúdo e possibilidades são discutidas.


Resumen Las entrevistas cognitivas pueden proporcionar evidencia de validez para los instrumentos basados en el proceso de respuesta al ítem. En la literatura brasileña, sin embargo, aún prevalece el uso de grupos focales; además, el análisis semántico solo se ha considerado en la búsqueda de evidencias de validez basadas en el contenido de la prueba. Este manuscrito presenta una propuesta para el análisis de datos cualitativos de entrevistas cognitivas. El objetivo es proporcionar a los investigadores un protocolo que posibilite las mejores prácticas en la realización de esta técnica, consolidándola en la literatura brasileña como una opción para la búsqueda de evidencias de validez a partir del proceso de respuesta a los ítems. Finalmente, se presentan algunas críticas en relación a los procedimientos actuales de búsqueda de evidencias de validez en base al contenido y se discuten posibilidades.
