ABSTRACT

The international development cooperation in child health arouses special interest in paediatric settings. In the last 10 10 years or so, new evidence has been presented on factors associated with morbidity and mortality in the first years of life in the least developed countries. This greater knowledge on the causes of health problems and possible responses in the form of interventions with impact, leads to the need to disseminate this information among concerned professional pediatricians. Serious efforts are needed to get a deeper insight into matters related to global child health and encourage pediatricians to be aware and participate in these processes. This article aims to provide a social pediatric approach towards international cooperation and child health-related matters

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In the last few years, many immigrant and adopted children from poor countries have come to live in Spain and the number is increasing. In this article we indicate which standard references can help pediatricians to determine the nutritional status and growth of these children whose social, personal and familial histories are different from our own and sometimes unknown. In these cases application of the standard national growth charts of the receiving country is recommended.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Thirty-seven offspring of patients who had acute myocardial infarctions were investigated. Serum fatty acids of the whole plasma lipids were evaluated within the frame of a full biochemical assessment. Baseline values were obtained and the children were subsequently put on appropriate diets and advised to cut-out smoking and alcohol. The same values were obtained following one year on such a regimen. Results were compared with those found in a control group. Baseline palmitoleic and dihomogammalinolenic acid serum levels were significantly raised in the study group. Values of palmitoleic, but not of dihomogammalinolenic acid, had returned to normal by the reassessment one year later.
