ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the effects of listening to music on preoperative anxiety levels in individuals planned for urological surgery. DESIGN: The study was a pretest-post-test randomized controlled study. METHODS: This research was conducted with 80 (intervention=40, control=40) individuals who applied to the urology clinic of a university hospital between September 2021 and February 2022 with surgery planned. The data were collected via the information form, state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI= STAI-S: state anxiety, STAI-T: trait anxiety), anxiety specific to surgery questionnaire (ASSQ). FINDINGS: The mean STAI-S scores for the pretest and post-test intervention group were 37.15 ± 8.04 and 34.67 ± 9.09; while scores for the control group were 36.23 ± 9.44 and 37.23 ± 9.78. While the difference in the intervention group was statistically significant (P = .006), there was no difference observed in the control group (P = .256). The pretest and post-test STAI-T mean scores for the intervention group were 39.73 ± 7.71 and 39.88 ± 8.22; the control group scores were 40.68 ± 4.91 and 41.25 ± 5.87; the difference between the intervention (P = .840) and control (P = .346) groups was not statistically significant. The pretest and post-test surgery-specific anxiety scale mean scores of the intervention group were 18.08 ± 4.52 and 16.55 ± 4.79; the control group were 20.50 ± 7.31 and 20.95 ± 7.69. While the difference in the intervention group was statistically significant (P = .011), no difference (P = .498) was determined in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals planned for urological surgery who listened to music for 30 minutes had reduced state and surgery-specific anxiety for 15 minutes after listening, however, this did not affect trait anxiety. The practice of listening to music before surgery may be recommended for individuals who are scheduled for urological surgery to reduce patient anxiety.

ABSTRACT

AIM: Nursing students have both positive and negative experiences during clinical education. This study was conducted to identify experiences of nursing students during clinical education in mental health clinics. DESIGN: This phenomenological qualitative design study was conducted with 4th year undergraduate nursing students from a university in Turkey to identify their experiences specifically in mental health clinics. METHODS: The data were collected using focus groups interviews with 40 nursing students and assessed with the 7-stage phenomenological analysis method described by Colaizzi. RESULTS: Three main themes were determined: (i) the need for supportive interventions to cope with negative emotions; (ii) difficulty in translating theoretical knowledge into practice; and (iii) the lack of role model nurses and teaching staff. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate that supportive interventions should be given to nursing students before clinical education. Also, the duration of clinical education, the teaching methods to be used and role model nurses and teaching staff effectiveness in clinical education should be planned carefully.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This descriptive and comparative study was conducted to determine the cognitive functions and nutritional status of nursing-home-residing and community-dwelling elderly. Methods: The study was carried out with a total of 204 elderly people who were community dwelling (n = 104) and nursing home residents (n = 100). Data were collected with the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and standardized with the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Results: Mean age of the nursing home residents and community-dwelling elderly people was 77.4 (SD = 6.7) years and 76.5 (SD = 7.4) years, respectively. Mean MMSE score was significantly different between nursing home residents (18.5 [SD = 4.5]) and community-dwelling elderly (22.1 [SD = 4.7]) (P < .05). Mean MNA score of nursing home residents (23.0 [SD = 3.7]) and community-dwelling elderly (24.6 [SD = 3.1]) was significantly different (P < .05). Conclusion: Nursing home residents were at risk of malnutrition and cognitive impairment. Precautions for the protection of the residents for maintaining nutritional status and cognitive functions were recommended.

ABSTRACT

Throughout the clinical learning process, nursing students' perception of aggression might have implications in terms of their future professional behavior toward patients. Using a descriptive cross-sectional design, we investigated the relationships between student nurses' perceptions of aggression and their personal characteristics, defense styles, and a convenience sample of 1539 experiences of aggressive behavior in clinical practice. Information about the students' personal features, their clinical practice, and experiences of aggressive behavior was obtained by questionnaire. The Turkish version of the Perception of Aggression Scale and Defense Styles Questionnaire-40 were also used. Students were frequently exposed to verbal aggression from patients and their relatives. And perceived patient aggression negatively, perception of aggression were associated with sex, defense styles, feelings of safety, and experiences of aggressions during clinical practice. Of interest is the reality that student nurses should be prepared for untoward events during their training.
