ABSTRACT

A halotolerant bacterium, strain SMB34T, was isolated from a naphthalene-utilizing bacterial consortium obtained from primitive technogeneous soil (Vrkhnekamsk salt deposit, Perm region, Russia) by enrichment procedure. The strain itself was unable to degrade naphthalene and grew at NaCl concentrations up to 11% (w/v). The 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analysis showed that the strain belongs to the genus Thalassospira. The DNA-DNA hybridization values between SMB34T and the type strains of phylogenetically closest species (T. xiamenensis, T. profundimaris and T. tepidiphila) did not exceed 50%. The novel strain could be distinguished from the above species by the cell motility, MALDI/TOF mass spectra of whole cells and a range of physiological and biochemical characteristics. SMB34T also considerably differs from the recently described species T. xianhensis, with the most striking differences in the DNA G + C content (53.7 +/- 1.0 vs. 61.2 +/- 1.0 mol.%) and predominant ubiquinones (Q-10 vs. Q-9). The data obtained suggest strain SMB34T (=VKM B-2527T = NBRC 106175T), designated as the type strain, represents a novel species, named Thalassospira permensis sp. nov.

ABSTRACT

AIM OF THE STUDY: The ecological impact of an over-use or a mis-use of fluoroquinolones (FQs) appears of great importance according to published data. With the objective to set up a regional antibiotic stewardship program, we conducted a regional audit on FQs usage. MATERIAL AND METHODS: [corrected] Ninety general practionners and 15 health care facilities participated to this prospective study. Overall, 511 prescriptions were evaluated (276 from hospital physicians and 235 [46%] from general practionners). The compliance of FQs prescription with national recommendations and with a regional referential was assessed. This regional referential was established in order to preserve FQs. RESULTS: Only 14,3% of the prescriptions complied with the regional referential, even if the choice of FQs were in accordance with national recommendations in 56,8% of the prescriptions. Urinary tract infections (mostly non-complicated) were the most common indication for FQs prescription. CONCLUSION: Analysis of FQs prescriptions shows that there is a significant potential for FQs preservation in Franche-Comté.

ABSTRACT

We studied metabolites synthesized by Bacillus subtilis strains, including the type strain of B. atrophaeus and phenotypically similar cultures. These metabolites were presented by polyene antibiotics with conjugated double bonds. Hexaenes from study strains inhibited the growth of phytopathogenic fungi Fusarium culmorum, F. sporotrichiella, F. oxysporum, Botrytis sorokiniana, Alternaria tenuis, and Phytophtora infestans. The degree of growth inhibition depended on the test fungus.

ABSTRACT

Bacteria belonging to different taxonomic and physiological groups (members of the genera Pseudomonas, Brevibacterium, Rhodopseudomonas, and Lactococcus) are able to form intracellular cobalt- and chromium-containing magnetic inclusions. The paper deals with the structure and the intracellular localization of these inclusions and their similarity to the known noncrystalline iron-containing magnetic inclusions. The possible biological role of the magnetic inclusions is discussed.

ABSTRACT

Prokaryotic cells may contain one of two types of magnetic intracellular structures, either crystalline magnetosomes or noncrystalline magnetic inclusions. In a magnetic field, the locomotor behavior of cells containing magnetosomes is categorized as magnetotaxis, whereas noncrystalline magnetic inclusions cause a passive attraction of cells containing such inclusions to a magnet. The review considers the distribution, structure, and function of both types of magnetic particles in prokaryotic cells.

ABSTRACT

The objects of the investigation were: distribution of intracellular magnet-sensitive structures among different taxonomic groups of prokaryotes, localisation and organisation of the magnet-sensitive inclusions (MsI) in cells. The MsI were discovered in representatives of both prokaryotic domains (Bacteria and Archaea), 2 kingdoms and 7 orders of bacteria. They were some amorphous or non-crystalline globules with the electron-transparent centre surrounded with an electron-dense homogenous matrix. The magnetic nature of the structures was shown by attraction with an applied magnet both for the cell suspensions and for the MsI isolated and separated from the destroyed cells. The MsI were studied with transparent electron microscopy and with X-ray analyses. When the cells were grown in the iron-containing nutrient medium, the matrix was enriched with iron. It was shown also that some bacteria grown with cobalt or with chromium contained the cobalt- or chromium-enriched magnetic inclusions.

ABSTRACT

Six strains containing site-specific endonucleases II were selected from a collection of 45 ice-nucleating bacterial strains isolated from rhizosphere of plants growing in various geographical regions. Endonucleases Pfl211I, Psp8I, and Psp23I were isolated and purified from two Pseudomonas sp. strains and a Pseudomonas fluorescens strain. Restriction endonucleases Pfl21I and Psp23I were shown to recognize and cleave the DNA nucleotide sequence 5'-CTGCA decrease G-3'. Endonuclease Psp8I recognized and cleaved the DNA nucleotide sequence 5'-G decrease GATCC-3'. These endonucleases were found to be true isoschizomers of PstI and BamHI, respectively.
