ABSTRACT

The newly discovered alpha 2-antiplasmin and some inhibitors of fibrinolysis were measured in 40 patients with liver diseases. alpha 2-antiplasmin was low in liver cirrhosis, but unchanged in cholestasis when compared with controls.

ABSTRACT

Serum concentrations of paracetamol were followed after oral administration of the drug to 21 patients with liver cirrhosis, 4 patients with secondary liver cancer, and 15 hospitalized patients without clinical evidence of liver disease. The cirrhotic patients had 50 per cent longer half-lives of the drug. They also had significantly higher values of AUC during the first 360 minutes, in spite of almost identical means values of Cmax and tCmax. Significant differences in paracetamol elimination between cirrhotics with and without ascites, or between cirrhotic with and without porto-caval shunt could not be demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

The first plasma Factor II-VII-X value after admission to the hospital was higher than 90% in 29% of 38 common duct stone patients, in 9% of 33 patients with bile duct obstruction due to pancreatic carcinoma, and in 3 of 5 patients with cholestatic drug reaction. In contrast, the admission value was above 90% in only one of 89 patients with acute hepatitis and in none of 8 patients with a hepatocellular drug reaction. Therefore, a high plasma Factor II-VII-X activity in a patient with liver or biliary tract disease seems to be a rellained by an increased protein synthesis in the liver.

ABSTRACT

In a series of 74 portacaval-shunted patients no statistically significant differences in long-term survival or in incidence of postoperative encephalopathy have been observed between electively and emergency operated patients, between patients with slight and moderate impairment of liver function (groups A and B according to Child) or between patients with alcoholic and non-alcoholic cirrhosis. Patients older than 60 years had a higher risk of postoperative encephalopathy and a border-line significantly lower survival rate six months after the operation. Among the patients with more than six months' survival, about 50% returned to work.
