ABSTRACT

Authors, after a short dissertation about evolution, trough out the years, of the diagnosis and the therapy of the mammary carcinoma, specify the leading role of primary prevention. Self palpation and the mammography reduce of about 30% the mortality. Modern pharmacology and radiotherapy allow a surgical preservative approach, produce better esthetic and functional results. Preservative therapy (QUART) also warrants a good quality of life, and allows the excellent control of primary disease.

ABSTRACT

The authors, after a dissertation on the aetiopathogenesis of "Barrett's oesophagus", dwell on the precancerous nature of this pathology involving the oesophageal-gastric junction. Its frequent association with cancer explains the necessity for an accurate follow-up in these patients: many investigations can be useful, the radiological study of oesophagus and stomach, manometry, pH-metry, but an irrefutable diagnosis can only be achieved through endoscopy, which makes possible a histological examination of the bioptic fragments. The authors also deal with the ideal therapeutic strategy and differentiate the cases in which the pharmacological therapy is more appropriate from those that need a surgical approach.

ABSTRACT

The authors examine the most interesting data about gallbladder cancer. They emphasize the difficulties of an useful approach to this pathology: an early diagnosis is quite impossible and the surgical treatment very disappointing.

ABSTRACT

Over the past ten years numerous studies have been carried out to identify tumour markers able to diagnose cancer of the digestive tract. The paper reports the combined use of some markers (CEA, TPA, GICA, CA 125) in patients with carcinoma of the colon-rectum. The Authors conclude that although these markers are of little use, especially in association, in the early diagnosis of disease, it is very important to utilise these markers to monitor patients following surgical, chemotherapeutic or radiotherapeutic treatment.

ABSTRACT

The authors describe, in the light of the current literature, the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic characteristic of testicular cancer. They remark the good results of adjuvant therapy in this type of tumor.

ABSTRACT

The Authors report four cases of primary gastric lymphomas. They stress the anatomopathological, clinical and therapeutic problems related to this disease because, at present, they are still discussed.

ABSTRACT

After recalling the various therapeutic aids proposed for the treatment of hydatid disease, personal experience in the use of mebendazole in patients suffering from pulmonary hydatidosis is reported. On the basis of the results obtained, it is concluded that mebendazole represents a useful therapeutic approach provided it is administered in full doses and for a long period in well selected cases, namely patients with cysts of limited dimension and, probably, of comparatively recent onset.

ABSTRACT

Following a short introduction on Bassini's operation, alternative surgical techniques are discussed: Postempski, Halsted, Mugnai-Ferrari, Anson-McVay, Marcy, Ferguson, Shouldice with their indications, advantages and disadvantages. Personal experience in the surgical treatment of 516 patients suffering from inguinal hernia is then reported and stress is laid on the need for precise anatomic knowledge of the inguinal region and skill in one technique in particular to limit the risk of recurrences.

ABSTRACT

The trial population consisted of 50 patients suffering from acute exacerbations of chronic bronchial disease processes. Forty patients were treated with an extempore combination of cefuroxime and N-acetylcysteine at the doses of 2 g and 600 mg/day respectively in two i.m. administrations. The other 10 patients were treated with N-acetylcysteine alone at the same dose. Respiratory tract clinical and instrumental parameters were investigated, and bacteriological tests were performed on sputum samples before and after treatment. Tolerance of the treatment was assessed on the basis of measurement of blood-chemistry parameters.

ABSTRACT

Experimental research was carried out in order to ascertain whether administration of drugs capable of acting on the renal circulation, such as mannitol and propanol, in addition to improving the renal function, also have a protective effect on the histomorphological alterations induced by the acute renal ischemia. On the basis of the results of the research the Authors conclude by asserting that the combined use of mannitol and propanol has a real protective effect in preventing or attenuating lesions of the kidney caused by serious acute renal failure.
