ABSTRACT

Water temperature plays a crucial role in the physiology of aquatic species, particularly in their survival and development. Thus, resource programs are commonly used to manage water quality conditions for endemic species. In a river system like the Nechako River system, central British Columbia, a water management program was established in the 1980s to alter water release in the summer months to prevent water temperatures from exceeding a 20 °C threshold downstream during the spawning season of Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka). Such a management regime could have consequences for other resident species like the white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus). Here, we use a hydrothermal model and white sturgeon life stage-specific experimental thermal tolerance data to evaluate water releases and potential hydrothermal impacts based on the Nechako water management plan (1980-2019). Our analysis focused mainly on the warmest five-month period of the year (May to September), which includes the water release management period (July-August). Our results show that the thermal exposure risk, an index that measures temperature impact on species physiology of Nechako white sturgeon across all early life stages (embryo, yolk-sac larvae, larvae, and juvenile) has increased substantially, especially in the 2010s relative to the management program implementations' first decade (the 1980s). The embryonic life stage was the most impacted, with a continuous increase in potential adverse thermal exposure in all months examined in the study. We also recorded major impacts of increased thermal exposure on the critical habitats necessary for Nechako white sturgeon recovery. Our study highlights the importance of a holistic management program with consideration for all species of the Nechako River system and the merit of possibly reviewing the current management plan, particularly with the current concerns about climate change impacts on the Nechako River.

ABSTRACT

Streamflow sensitivity to different hydrologic processes varies in both space and time. This sensitivity is traditionally evaluated for the parameters specific to a given hydrologic model simulating streamflow. In this study, we apply a novel analysis over more than 3000 basins across North America considering a blended hydrologic model structure, which includes not only parametric, but also structural uncertainties. This enables seamless quantification of model process sensitivities and parameter sensitivities across a continuous set of models. It also leads to high-level conclusions about the importance of water cycle components on streamflow predictions, such as quickflow being the most sensitive process for streamflow simulations across the North American continent. The results of the 3000 basins are used to derive an approximation of sensitivities based on physiographic and climatologic data without the need to perform expensive sensitivity analyses. Detailed spatio-temporal inputs and results are shared through an interactive website.

ABSTRACT

The Hydrometeorological Sandbox - École de technologie supérieure (HYSETS) is a rich, comprehensive and large-scale database for hydrological modelling covering 14425 watersheds in North America. The database includes data covering the period 1950-2018 depending on the type and source of data. The data include a wide array of hydrometeorological data required to perform hydrological and climate change impact studies: (1) watershed properties including boundaries, area, elevation slope, land use and other physiographic information; (2) hydrometric gauging station discharge time-series; (3) precipitation, maximum and minimum daily air temperature time-series from weather station records and from (4) the SCDNA infilled gauge meteorological dataset; (5) the NRCan and Livneh gridded interpolated products' meteorological data; (6) ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis data; and (7) the SNODAS and ERA5-Land snow water equivalent estimates. All data have been processed and averaged at the watershed scale, and provides a solid basis for hydrological modelling, climate change impact studies, model calibration assessment, regionalization method evaluation and essentially any study requiring access to large amounts of spatiotemporally varied hydrometeorological data.

ABSTRACT

Poultry has been identified as a reservoir of foodborne enteric pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria. The objective of this study was to describe and compare antimicrobial resistant isolates from an Ontario broiler chicken farm-level baseline project (2003 to 2004) to the Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (CIPARS) Ontario abattoir and retail surveillance data from 2003, and to the most recent (2015) CIPARS Ontario chicken surveillance data in order to assess the impact of an industry-wide policy change in antimicrobial use. Ceftiofur resistance (TIO-R) prevalence in Salmonella decreased by 7% on farm between 2003 and 2004 and 2015. During the same timeframe, TIO-R E. coli prevalence decreased significantly by 16%, 11%, and 8% in farm, abattoir, and retail samples, respectively. Gentamicin resistant (GEN-R) E. coli, however, increased by 10% in farm and 15% in retail-derived isolates, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole resistant (TMSm-R) E. coli increased significantly by 20%, 18%, and 5% in farm, abattoir, and retail isolates, respectively. Similarly, ciprofloxacin-resistant (CIP-R) Campylobacter spp. significantly increased in retail isolates by 11% and increased in farm (33%) and abattoir isolates (7%). The decrease in TIO-R Salmonella/E. coli in recent years is consistent with the timing of an industry-led intervention eliminating the preventive use of ceftiofur, a third generation cephalosporin and class of antimicrobials deemed critically important to human medicine. The rise in GEN-R and TMSm-R prevalence is indicative of recent shifts in antimicrobial use. Our study highlights the importance of integrated surveillance in detecting emerging trends and determining the efficacy of interventions to improve food safety.


La volaille a été identifiée comme étant un réservoir d'agents pathogènes entériques d'origine alimentaire et de bactéries résistantes aux antimicrobiens. L'objectif de la présente étude était de décrire et comparer des isolats résistants aux antimicrobiens provenant d'une ferme ontarienne de poulets à griller obtenus dans le cadre d'un projet de base (2003 à 2004) aux données de surveillance de 2003 du Programme intégré canadien de surveillance de la résistance aux antimicrobiens (PICRA) d'abattoir et de ventes au détail en Ontario, et aux plus récentes données de surveillance (2015) du PICRA Ontario pour la volaille afin d'évaluer l'impact d'un changement à l'ensemble de l'industrie dans l'utilisation des antimicrobiens. La prévalence de la résistance au cefiofur (TIO-R) de Salmonella a diminué de 7 % sur la ferme entre 2003 à 2004 et 2015. Durant ce même intervalle de temps, la prévalence de TIO-R de E. coli diminua de manière significative de 16 %, 11 %, et 8 % dans les échantillons provenant de la ferme, de l'abattoir et de la vente au détail, respectivement. Toutefois, les E. coli résistant à la gentamicine (GEN-R) ont augmenté de 10 % et 15 % dans les échantillons pris à la ferme et de la vente au détail, respectivement. Les E. coli résistants au trimethoprime-sulfaméthoxazole (TMSm-R) ont augmenté de manière significative par 20 %, 18 %, et 5 % dans les isolats de la ferme, de l'abattoir et de la vente au détail, respectivement. ABSTRACT

Intravascular catheter-associated bloodstream infections significantly increase rates of morbidity and hospital costs. Microbial colonization and development of biofilms, which are known to be recalcitrant to antibiotic therapy, often lead to the loss of otherwise patent vascular access systems. We evaluated a new taurolidine- and citrate-based catheter lock solution (Neutrolin; Biolink Corporation, Norwell, Mass.) for its activity against planktonic microbes, antimicrobial activity in a catheter model, and biofilm eradication activity. In studies of planktonic microbes, after 24 h of contact, 675 mg of taurolidine-citrate solution per liter caused > 99% reductions in the initial counts of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Entercoccus faecalis. A solution of 13,500 mg/liter was cidal for Candida albicans. Ports and attached catheters inoculated with 50 to 600 CFU of these bloodstream isolates per ml were locked with heparin or the taurolidine-citrate solution. After 72 h, there was no growth in the taurolidine-citrate-treated devices but the heparin-treated devices exhibited growth in the range of 6 x 10(2) to 5 x 10(6) CFU/ml. Biofilms were developed on silicone disks in modified Robbins devices with broth containing 6% serum (initial counts, 10(6) to 10(8) CFU/cm(2)). The axenic biofilms were treated for 24 h with taurolidine-citrate or heparin. Taurolidine-citrate exposure resulted in a median reduction of 4.8 logs, whereas heparin treatment resulted in a median reduction of 1.7 logs (P < 0.01). No significant differences in the effects of the two treatments against P. aeruginosa and C. albicans were observed. These findings suggest that taurolidine-citrate is a promising combination agent for the prevention and treatment of intravascular catheter-related infections.
