ABSTRACT

Antibacterial agents with low toxicity to normal cells, redox activity and free radical scavenging property are urgently needed to address the global health crisis. The phenomenal conducting nature of graphene is a best fit to enhance the antibacterial properties of metal oxides. In this work, CeO2 nanotiles and graphene nanoplatelets/CeO2 nanotiles nanocomposites (G/CeO2) have been synthesized by a solvothermal method. The prepared materials have been characterized using XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, and UV-visible spectroscopy techniques to investigate their crystallinity, morphology, composition, and optical bandgap energies. The CeO2 and G/CeO2 nanocomposites have also been tested for antibacterial applications. The neat CeO 2 nanotiles sample inhibits the bacterial growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus up to 14.21% and 39.53% respectively. The antibacterial activity was tremendously enhanced using 25% graphene-loaded sample (G/CeO2-II) i.e., approximately 83% loss of P. aeruginosa and 89% in case of S. aureus has been observed. This can be attributed to the unique nano-architecture, oxidative stress due to the excellent ability of reversible conversion between the two electronic states of CeO2 and the stress exerted by the planar graphene and CeO2 nanotiles. Therefore, the G/CeO2 nanocomposites can find potential application as nano-antibiotics for controlling pathogens.

ABSTRACT

The wasp, Bracon hebetor Say, is an important potential biocontrol agent of a wide range of lepidopteran insect species. The current study was subjected to compare these ectoparasitoid fitness traits on different host species belonging to the order Lepidoptera. Moreover, we determine the population dynamic with different host densities, sex ratio patterns, super-parasitism, longevity, paralysis success, and reproductive potential under laboratory conditions. Our results revealed that oviposition increased with an increase in host density, while the adult emergence and egg hatching were decreased due to the super-parasitism on host larvae. A higher male and female-biased population were observed when virgin and mated females offered fresh hosts. Adults' longevity was recorded more in females than males when kept only with bee honey + royal jelly + host larvae. The mean duration of egg-adult development was recorded higher on Galleria mellonella and lowest on Busseola fusca. The parasitization rate, super-parasitism, and cumulative fecundity of mated and virgin female wasps with different host species were observed higher on specific host Galleria mellonella while it was lower on Phthorimaea operculella. Furthermore, the parasitoids having mating experience preferred fresh, while the parasitoids' lack of mating experiences preferred paralyzed host under olfactometer test. Besides, this research has produced novel facts on the biology of parasitic wasp, B. hebetor that may guide the advancement of sustainable biological control programs to control lepidopteran pests.

ABSTRACT

The world is facing alarming challenges of environmental pollution due to uncontrolled water contamination and multiple drug resistance of pathogens. However, these challenges can be addressed by using novel nanocomposites materials such as, SnO2/graphene nanopaletelets (GNPs) nanocomposites remarkably. In this work, we have prepared SnO2nanorods and SnO2/GNPs nanocomposites (GS-I and GS-II) with size of 25 ± 6 nm in length and 4 ± 2 nm in diameter. The optical bandgap energies change from 3.14 eV to 2.80 eV in SnO2and SnO2/GNPs nanocomposite. We found that SnO2/GNPs nanocomposite (GS-II) completely removes (99.11%) malachite green in 12 min, under UV light exposure, while under same conditions, SnO2nanorods removes only 37% dye. Moreover, visible light exposure resulted in 99.01% removal of malachite green in 15 min by GSII as compared to 24.7% removal by SnO2. In addition, GS-II nanocomposite inhibits 79.57% and 78.51% growth ofP. aeruginosaandS. aureusrespectively. A synchronized contribution of SnO2and GNPs makes SnO2/GNPs nanocomposites (GS-II) an innovative multifunctional material for simultaneous fast and complete removal of malachite green and inhibition of drug resistant pathogens.

ABSTRACT

Mammalian reproduction is a highly regulated process that can be distorted following exposure to synthetic antimicrobial preservatives like butylparaben (BP). Besides, studies have not investigated the potential antioxidant effects of turmeric on BP-provoked reprotoxicity. The present research was planned on prepubertal mice, orally treated with BP (150 µg/g body weight/day) with and without Curcuma longa (turmeric) (400 µg/mice/day) from postnatal day 35 to 65 routinely. Results showed an insignificant reduction in body weight of both sexes but contrary to these, gonadal weight increased significantly in PB-exposed mice. Additionally, elevated levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone while decreased estrogen levels were observed in BP-treated females against control. Sperm count and motility were disturbed, coupled with abnormal sperm morphology in BP-intoxicated group. These findings were synchronized with a decreased testosterone levels in the same group as compared with control. The follicular count revealed reduction in the number of antral follicles while an increase in empty follicles. The BP also significantly increased lipid peroxidation and decreased glutathione content, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities, while the morphometric, biochemical, and histological deviations were less pronounced in the group, which was co-administered with BP and turmeric. Results indicated that turmeric has antioxidant potential to protect BP-induced oxidative stress and reprotoxicity in mice.
