ABSTRACT

The exceptional optical, electrical, and mechanical capabilities of layered transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, called MXenes, revolutionized materials science. Among them, Ti3C2 received the most attention owing to the developed synthesis and processing methods, high conductivity, and pronounced plasmonic response. The latter, however, remains controversial with the open question of whether the peak around 800 nm has plasmonic or interband transition origin. To address this issue, we combine spectroscopic ellipsometry and transmittance results with first-principle computations. Their combination reveals that although Ti3C2 is a metal, its optical response becomes plasmonic (Re ε < 0) above 1415 nm, in contrast to the previous understanding. In addition to fundamental significance, this dual dielectric/plasmonic optical response opens a path for theranostic applications, as we demonstrated on the example of Ti3C2 nanospheres. Thus, our study revisits broadband (300-3300 nm) optical constants of Ti3C2 and broadens its application scope in photonics.

ABSTRACT

Materials with high optical constants are of paramount importance for efficient light manipulation in nanophotonics applications. Recent advances in materials science have revealed that van der Waals (vdW) materials have large optical responses owing to strong in-plane covalent bonding and weak out-of-plane vdW interactions. However, the optical constants of vdW materials depend on numerous factors, e.g., synthesis and transfer method. Here, we demonstrate that in a broad spectral range (290-3300 nm) the refractive index n and the extinction coefficient k of Bi2Se3 are almost independent of synthesis technology, with only a ~10% difference in n and k between synthesis approaches, unlike other vdW materials, such as MoS2, which has a ~60% difference between synthesis approaches. As a practical demonstration, we showed, using the examples of biosensors and therapeutic nanoparticles, that this slight difference in optical constants results in reproducible efficiency in Bi2Se3-based photonic devices.

ABSTRACT

STUDY PURPOSE: The DRAGON 1 trial aims to assess training, implementation, safety and feasibility of combined portal- and hepatic-vein embolization (PVE/HVE) to accelerate future liver remnant (FLR) hypertrophy in patients with borderline resectable colorectal cancer liver metastases. METHODS: The DRAGON 1 trial is a worldwide multicenter prospective single arm trial. The primary endpoint is a composite of the safety of PVE/HVE, 90-day mortality, and one year accrual monitoring of each participating center. Secondary endpoints include: feasibility of resection, the used PVE and HVE techniques, FLR-hypertrophy, liver function (subset of centers), overall survival, and disease-free survival. All complications after the PVE/HVE procedure are documented. Liver volumes will be measured at week 1 and if applicable at week 3 and 6 after PVE/HVE and follow-up visits will be held at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the resection. RESULTS: Not applicable. CONCLUSION: DRAGON 1 is a prospective trial to assess the safety and feasibility of PVE/HVE. Participating study centers will be trained, and procedures standardized using Work Instructions (WI) to prepare for the DRAGON 2 randomized controlled trial. Outcomes should reveal the accrual potential of centers, safety profile of combined PVE/HVE and the effect of FLR-hypertrophy induction by PVE/HVE in patients with CRLM and a small FLR. ABSTRACT

Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Despite notable progress, detecting superconductivity in compressed hydrogen remains an unsolved problem. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed metal polyhydrides, here small doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium is demonstrated to lead to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to ≈200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr-H system, the formation of several new phases is observed: C2/m-Sr3 H13 , pseudocubic SrH6 , SrH9 with cubic F 4 ¯ 3 m $F\bar{4}3m$ -Sr sublattice, and pseudo tetragonal superionic P1-SrH22 , the metal hydride with the highest hydrogen content (96 at%) discovered so far. High diffusion coefficients of hydrogen in the latter phase DH  = 0.2-2.1 × 10-9 m2 s-1 indicate an amorphous state of the H-sublattice, whereas the strontium sublattice remains solid. Unlike Ca and Y, strontium forms molecular semiconducting polyhydrides, whereas calcium and yttrium polyhydrides are high-TC superconductors with an atomic H sublattice. The discovered SrH22 , a kind of hydrogen sponge, opens a new class of materials with ultrahigh content of hydrogen.

Background: Whole-body computerized tomography (CT) scan designed as early diagnosis of traumatic injuries and prevention of unnoticeable injuries. Using Whole-body CT in trauma patients still controversial, there is no consensus on indications. Aims: The aim of this study is to clarify indications and cut-off levels in vital parameters in trauma patients who undergo Whole-body CT to prevent unnecessary or negative scans. Patients and Methods: We evaluated patients with trauma who applied our emergency service between 01.09.2019 and 30.09.2020. Patients above 18 years old with Whole-body CT scan included. Whole-body CT reports were evaluated according to five categories; cranial-face, vertebra, thorax, abdomen, pelvis-bone. Results: The review of whole-body CT reports, 46.3% detected normally. But, 53.7% of patients had injuries at least one zone, 23.3% at least two zones, and 7.4% at least three zones respectively. Prediction criteria of Whole-body CT for the patients with two or three zones injury, systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≤100 mm Hg, Glasgow coma scale (GCS) <15, and free fluid in Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) were independent variables in regression analysis. When patients had at least one of three variables, the negative predictive value of whole-body CT was 96% for three zones and 91% for two zones. Conclusion: The cut-off values of GCS <15 and SBP ≤100 mm Hg were useful vital parameters in making whole-body CT decisions in trauma patients in the emergency service. Also, free fluid detection in FAST can be used for whole-body CT decisions.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we investigated antibiotic-resistant microorganisms isolated by the direct plating method from 6 playgrounds in the city of Pushchino, Moscow Region, with different types of coating: sand, soil with sand, grass and a modern playground coating made of pressed rubber crumb. According to the results of the study, sand is the cleanest type of coating, both in terms of the total count of cultivated microorganisms (8 × 105/g of substrate) and in terms of the content of resistant strains. The most contaminated both in terms of the total count of cultivated microorganisms (1.2-1.9 × 109/g of substrate) and in terms of the content of antibiotic-resistant strains was the coating of pressed rubber crumb. We isolated 65 antibiotic-resistant strains of fluorescent pseudomonads. Nine Pseudomonas strains were found to contain antibiotic resistance plasmids (one belongs to P-1 incompatibility group, seven to IncP-7 and one to unidentified incompatibility group). For the first time, we discovered a conjugative plasmid pD4A-46 conferring tetracycline resistance and belonging to the P-7 incompatibility group. Taking into account the results obtained under this study, it can be recommended to periodically treat the crumb rubber coating with non-toxic antiseptics, i.e. hydrogen peroxide or chlorhexidine.

ABSTRACT

Noble transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as PtS2 and PtSe2 show significant potential in a wide range of optoelectronic and photonic applications. Noble TMDCs, unlike standard TMDCs such as MoS2 and WS2, operate in the ultrawide spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths; however, their properties remain largely unexplored. Here, we measured the broadband (245-3300 nm) optical constants of ultrathin PtS2 and PtSe2 films to eliminate this gap and provide a foundation for optoelectronic device simulation. We discovered their broadband absorption and high refractive index both theoretically and experimentally. Based on first-principle calculations, we also predicted their giant out-of-plane optical anisotropy for monocrystals. As a practical illustration of the obtained optical properties, we demonstrated surface plasmon resonance biosensors with PtS2 or PtSe2 functional layers, which dramatically improves sensor sensitivity by 60 and 30%, respectively.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to assess the effects of a combination of the passive leg raising (PLR) and Trendelenburg positions on the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the right internal jugular vein (RIJV) using ultrasound measurement in awake patients. METHODS: This prospective observational cross-over study measured the CSA of RIJV in patients in supine (Supine-I), Trendelenburg, Trendelenburg with passive leg raising (T + PLR position), and repeated supine position (Supine-II). The CSA and vertical and horizontal diameters of the RIJVs were compared before and after each position. RESULTS: A total of 120 adult patients were enrolled in the study. The mean CSA of the RIJV significantly increased from 91.2 ± 31.7 mm2 to 110.4 ± 38.2 mm2 in the Trendelenburg position compared to the supine position (P < 0.05). However, there were no statistically significant differences in CSA were observed between the Trendelenburg and Trendelenburg + PLR positions. CONCLUSION: Although the PLR + Trendelenburg position increased the jugular vein diameter relative to the supine position, its clinical usefulness is limited as this increase was still lower than that achieved with the Trendelenburg position alone.

ABSTRACT

SnS2 and SnSe2 have recently been shown to have a wide range of applications in photonic and optoelectronic devices. However, because of incomplete knowledge about their optical characteristics, the use of SnS2 and SnSe2 in optical engineering remains challenging. Here, we addressed this problem by establishing SnS2 and SnSe2 linear and nonlinear optical properties in the broad (300-3300 nm) spectral range. Coupled with the first-principle calculations, our experimental study unveiled the full dielectric tensor of SnS2 and SnSe2. Furthermore, we established that SnS2 is a promising material for visible high refractive index nanophotonics. Meanwhile, SnSe2 demonstrates a stronger nonlinear response compared with SnS2. Our results create a solid ground for current and next-generation SnS2- and SnSe2-based devices.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical usefulness of endoscopic treatment of suprasellar arachnoid cysts indenting the third ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus and discuss the clinical features and outcomes of thirteen children treated at our institution. METHOD: We treated thirteen pediatric cases of suprasellar arachnoid cysts indenting the third ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus between January 2012 and September 2018. Five female and eight male patients were enrolled in the study. The patients had increased intracranial pressure symptoms due to hydrocephaly. Endoscopic treatment was performed in all cases. RESULTS: The patients were followed-up for an average of 36.8 months. The postoperative intracranial pressure findings improved. There was a reduction in the size of the cyst and ventricles and enlargement of the cortical sulci. One patient suffered transient oculomotor nerve deficit. No further surgical interventions, such as shunt placement, were required during the follow-up period. The head circumference of two of the patients with macrocephaly were stable during the follow-up. There were no postoperative recurrences detected. CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic cyst fenestration and third ventriculostomy are less invasive, safer, and more effective ways to treat suprasellar arachnoid cysts indenting the third ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus in children with hydrocephaly.

ABSTRACT

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused fatal outbreaks of pneumonia. The similarity of S protein of SARS-CoV-2 with SARS-CoV and RaTG13 is about 76% and 97%, respectively. Also its potential receptor-binding domain (RBD) shows similarity with approximately 74% and 90.1% for SARS-CoV and RaTG13, respectively. SARS-CoV-2 has been shown to use the SARS-CoV receptor ACE2 for entry and serine protease TMPRSS2 for S protein priming. Sialic acids are primarily expressed by vertebrates and some microbial pathogens improving the ability to avoid immune system of vertebrate host. Interactions of sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectins (Siglecs) with their ligands play an important role in modulating immune cell function activities as their regulators. Therefore, while Siglecs help immune cells to distinguish between self and non-self, non-self ligands of some sialylated pathogens can recognize Siglecs and reduce immune cell responses or escape from immune surveillance. In this review, innate immunity in SARS-Cov-2 infection was discussed through Siglecs, especially Siglec-7, Siglec-3, NKG2A and neuraminidases. ABSTRACT

IM: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder resulting in degeneration of certain neuronal structures in certain brain regions and severe neuronal loss, characterized by a pathological accumulation of senile amyloid plaques (SP) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) within the brain . Alzheimer's disease has been associated with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in recent years. We designed our study on the relationship between AD and T2DM. Genome screening studies in different populations had linked the chromosome 12q24 region to type 2 diabetes. Within this region, there is the PSMD9 gene encoding a transcriptional coactivator of insulin production. METHOD: The effect of PSMD9 gene E197G (rs14259) polymorphism on AD was investigated in29 Alzheimer's patients and 25 healthy controls, who were included in the study. RESULTS: In our study, it was determined that the variant of PSMD9 gene E197G (rs14259) did not cause genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease in Turkish population. CONCLUSIONS: Our study was the first to investigate the relationship between PSMD9 gene and Alzheimer's disease. A larger sample group is needed to investigate the contribution of the PSMD9 gene to Alzheimer's disease in further studies (Tab. 5, Ref. 8).

ABSTRACT

The effect of chitosan (C), chitosan enriched with thyme (CT) or rosemary (CR) essential oils, and potassium sorbate (PS) against superficial fungal growth was investigated in fermented sausages during 3 months of storage at 4 °C. For control groups, distilled water (DW) and acetic acid (AA) were used. PS, C, CT and CR treatments inhibited fungal growth on casings while they resulted in lower Gram(+) catalase(+) cocci, Enterobacteriaceae, mold and yeast counts in sausages. Lower TBARS values were determined for CT and CR (p < .05). A total of 44 and 64 volatile compounds were identified in sausages and casings, respectively. Sausages coated with C, CT or CR had acceptable sensory attributes at the end of storage; however, DW and AA groups were rejected in the second and third month (p < .05), respectively, due to intense fungal growth which resulted in sensory defects.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The effects of quercetin and selenium on oxidative stress in endometrial adenocarcinoma cells are unclear. In this study, the effects of quercetin and selenium on oxidative stress caused by both hydrogen peroxide and UV radiation in endometrial adenocarcinoma cells were examined. METHODS: The viability of endometrial adenocarcinoma cells cultured in vitro and treated with different concentrations of quercetin and sodium selenite was measured using the MTT assay. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were investigated, and expression levels of BAD and p53 genes were analysed using real­time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining technique was applied to detect apoptosis. Mass attenuation coefficient of each quercetin and sodium selenite combinations was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. RESULTS: The combination of quercetin and sodium selenite enhanced cell viability, and reduced MDA levels. The expression levels of BAD and p53 genes decreased by combined treatment with quercetin and selenium while showing synergistic effects in terms of gene expression. Fluorescent microscopic examination showed a decrease in apoptotic cells in endometrial adenocarcinoma cells treated with the combination of quercetin and selenium. CONCLUSIONS: For the first time, selenium and quercetin have synergistic cytoprotective and radioprotective effects on oxidative stress caused by hydrogen peroxide in endometrial adenocarcinoma cells for the first time (Tab. 1, Fig. 7, Ref. 39).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) may induce DNA damage and oxidative stress in human lens epithelial cells (LECs). We aimed to investigate the expression levels of heat shock protein 27 (Hsp27), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and caspase-3 gene expression levels in rat eye that was exposed to 1800 MHz RF-EMF. METHODS: Thirty-seven female Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups. The rats in the study group (n = 9) were exposed to 1800 MHz RF-EMF at an electric field 6.8 ± 0.1 V/m and 0.06 W/kg specific absorption rate (SAR) for 2 hours per day for eight weeks. Sham group (n = 9) was kept under similar conditions as the exposed group without exposure to RF-EMF. The rats in all three groups were sacrificed and their eyes were removed. Hsp27, p38MAPK, EGFR, caspase-3 gene expression levels were investigated in detail with real-time polymerase chain reactions (Real-Time PCR). RESULTS: caspase-3 and p38MAPK gene expression were significantly upregulated in the ocular tissues following exposure to RF-EMF (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: According to our findings, eye cells recognize EMF as a stress factor, and in response, activate caspase-3 and p38MAPK gene expressions. These results confirm that RF-EMF can cause cellular damage in rat ocular cells (Tab. 2, Fig. 3, Ref. 37).

PURPOSE: Surgical reduction due to breast size is not carried out merely for anesthetic concerns but also for such complaints as breast pain belonging to breast and skeletal system, back pain, neck pain, and intertriginous rashes. This study aims to investigate the effect of bilateral breast reduction surgery on maximum inspiratory pressure (Ppeak) and pulmonary functions. This study aims to investigate the effect of bilateral breast reduction surgery on pulmonary function test. METHODS: The study included 50 patients who would undergo bilateral breast reduction. Patients were divided into two groups: group II were given positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), which was not administered to the group I. Patients were checked in terms of maximum inspiratory pressures (Ppeak) before surgery, after first and second breasts were removed, and after surgery. Pulmonary function tests were carried out on preoperative, postoperative second and 14th days. As RFT, forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1 (forced expiratory volume at the first second of FVC), FEV1/FVC and PEF (peak expiratory flow rate) were measured. RESULTS: In both groups, demographic data were not found to statistically significant differences (P > 0.05). When compared both groups in terms of preoperative FVC and FEV1/FVC 14th day, a significant increase was found on the 14th day (P < 0.05). A significant difference was not established between groups in terms of Ppeak values (P > 0.05). Ppeak was found to be significantly higher in group I (22.28 ± 7.56) at the end of intubation compared with group II (19.04 ± 3.73) (P = 0.002, P < 0.05). Similarly, preoperative Ppeak was established to be 21.88 ± 7.51 in group I and it was significantly higher compared with group II (19.44 ± 4.08), (P = 0.002, P < 0.05). When compared Ppeak values at the end of intubation and before operation with entry values a statistically significant difference was not found in either group (P = 0.76, P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Some researchers reported a positive correlation between FVC, FEV1/FVC, and PEF along with the excised tissue mass. We established a positive correlation between the excised tissue weight and FVC and FEV1/FVC and that PEEP application did not have an impact on Ppeak.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Although it is well known that coping with mental disorder is a traumatic experience, studies of the relationships between posttraumatic growth and the variables that can affect it are rarely found in the literature. The studies that do exist usually focus on posttraumatic growth after posttraumatic stress disorder has developed as a result of traumatic life events such as earthquakes, wars, accidents or physical disease. In the literature, there exist few studies of patients diagnosed with psychosis. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This study shows that posttraumatic growth can be seen in patients after the diagnosis of mental disorders. Patients who use effective coping methods show more posttraumatic growth. In addition, patients who are satisfied with the nursing care received in the clinic show more posttraumatic growth. This indicates that care delivered by psychiatric nurses contributes to the posttraumatic growth of the patients. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Psychiatric nurses who recognize that suffering a mental disorder is a traumatic experience and that patients can grow from this experience can contribute to the posttraumatic growth of those in their care. When they see signs of posttraumatic growth, nurses can teach patients how to cope with that stress effectively and how to share their feelings, thoughts and experiences related to the situation. In addition, psychosocial interventions such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy and eye movement desensitization can be used to aid posttraumatic growth. ABSTRACT: Introduction Although it is recognized that suffering a mental illness is a traumatic experience, the fact that this can lead to posttraumatic growth and the variables that may affect the situation are rarely discussed in the literature. Aim This study was conducted to determine the effects of coping styles and nursing care perceptions on posttraumatic growth in mental disorders. Method The descriptive study was conducted at a psychiatric clinic with a personal information form and three-scale test. Results In the study, completed with 122 psychiatric inpatients, it was found that patients were using effective methods to cope with stress, were satisfied with nursing care and had high posttraumatic growth. Moreover, it was found that effective coping styles and satisfaction with nursing care positively affected the posttraumatic growth level of patients. Discussion The results support the proposition that using effective coping styles and seeking professional support after traumatic life events influence posttraumatic growth levels. Implications for practice Psychiatric nurses should be aware of the fact that developing a mental disorder is a traumatic life event after which posttraumatic growth can occur. They should encourage posttraumatic growth by teaching effective coping methods, providing psychiatric care and using psychosocial interventions such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy and eye movement desensitization.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Betatrophin and fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21), which are recently discovered members of hepatokine/adipokine family, have been proposed to be associated with some metabolic disorders in which insulin resistance plays a major role. METHODS: We aimed to investigate serum betatrophin and FGF-21 concentrations in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 31 women with PCOS and 34 women as healthy controls. Serum betatrophin level and its relationship with serum FGF-21 level as well as metabolic parameters were examined. RESULTS: Serum betatrophin level was significantly higher in women with PCOS than the control group [1.10 (0.20-4.20) vs 0.70 (0.20-3.50) ng/ml, p = 0.004], whereas FGF-21 did not differ between the groups [74.80 (7.80-435.90) vs 119.30 (10.50-443.40) pg/ml, p = 0.13]. Serum betatrophin correlated positively with LH levels (r = 0.26, p = 0.03). After controlling BMI, there was a significant positive correlation between betatrophin and FGF-21 (r = 0.25, p = 0.04). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that FGF-21 and presence of PCOS were the significant predictors of betatrophin concentrations (R2 = 0.22, F = 2.56, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that betatrophin levels are increased and associated with LH and FGF-21 levels, but not with insulin resistance, in women with PCOS.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To report an initial experience using a primary constrained transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) technique for treating cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites or variceal bleeding. METHODS: All patients undergoing primary constrained (n = 9) and conventional (n = 18) TIPS between July 2014 and June 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Preprocedure demographics, Child-Pugh, model for end-stage liver disease and technical variables were recorded. Outcomes measured included technical and clinical success, complications, 30-day mortality, as well as necessity for TIPS revision. Average (SD) and median follow-up was 237 (190) and 226 days. RESULTS: All constrained and conventional TIPS were technically successful (100%). Clinical success as defined as a reduction or improvement in presenting symptoms was 88.9% (8/9) and 100% (18/18) in the constrained and conventional groups, respectively (p = 1). The average reduction in portosystemic gradient was lower in the constrained group, 6.1 mmHg compared with 10.6 mmHg in the conventional group (p = 0.73). The rate of hepatic encephalopathy following TIPS placement was higher in the conventional group [16.7% (3/18)] compared with 0% in the constrained group (p = 0.52). The percentage of patients requiring TIPS revision was lower in the constrained group, although the results were not significant (11.1 vs 22.2%, p = 0.63). CONCLUSION: Primary constrained TIPS is a feasible modification to conventional TIPS with similar technical and clinical success rates. A trend towards a smaller reduction in the portosystemic gradient and need for revision was observed in the constrained group. Advances in knowledge: Primary constrained TIPS allows for greater stepwise control over shunt diameter and may represent an improved technique for patients at risk for hepatic encephalopathy.

ABSTRACT

Pyrazole carboxylic acid derivatives of 5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-sulfonamide (inhibitor 1) were synthesized from ethyl 3-(chlorocarbonyl)-1-(3-nitrophenyl)-5-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylate compound. The inhibitory effects of inhibitor 1, acetazolamide (AAZ) and of 11 newly synthesized amides (5a-b, 6, 7a-g, and 8) on hydratase and esterase activities of carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes (hCA-I and hCA-II) have been studied in vitro. The comparison of newly synthesized amides to inhibitor 1 and to AAZ indicated that the new derivatives inhibit CA isoenzymes and they are more potent inhibitors than the parent inhibitor 1 and AAZ.
