ABSTRACT

Chronic pyopolypous pansinusitis in a patient presenting with mucopyocele of the frontal sinus is described. A brief characteristic of cyst-like extension of the paranasal sinuses is presented. Special attention is given to the main diagnostic criteria. The methods of surgical and postoperative treatment of patients with the pathology in question are discussed.

ABSTRACT

A pilot trial of efficacy of the drugs lisobact and stomatidin in local treatment of acute pharyngitis and combined therapy of tonsillitis and paratonsillar abscess included 82 patients with tonsillitis (n=30), paratonsillar abscess (n=30) and acute pharyngitis (n=22) aged 15-72 years. Effectiveness of the treatment was assessed by changes in clinical symptoms, pharyngoscopic picture and results of bacteriological studies. It was found that treatment with lisobact and stomatidin diminished considerably bacterial contamination of the paratonsillar abscess and pharyngeal mucosa. Local treatment with lisobact and stomatidin for paratonsillar abscess in combination with systemic antibacterial drug reduces the time of hospital stay, in tonsillitis patients - of disability. High compliance to lisobact and stomatidin treatment was observed.

ABSTRACT

A randomized multicenter study of sinuforte efficacy and safety was made in 120 patients with sinusitis. All the patients were randomized into two groups: the study group of 60 patients received monotherapy with sinuforte in a single daily dose for 7 days; the control group of 60 patients received conventional treatment for 7 days. The efficacy of the treatments was assessed by the results of clinical, endoscopic and laboratory tests. The analysis of the study results shows that sinuforte monotherapy is an effective and safe in the treatment of exudative sinusitis of mild and moderate severity.

ABSTRACT

Variants of plastic reconstruction of the frontal sinus anterior wall in its traumatic lesion is reviewed. Examination and treatment of 17 patients with the diagnosis of fracture of the frontal sinus anterior wall with a cosmetic defect were performed in Moscow hospital N 1. Plastic reconstruction consisted of reposition of the bone fragments with elevator (6 patients), reposition and suturing of the fragments to the border of the bone defect (9 patients). Follow-up proved efficacy of the above surgical treatment in repair of the cosmetic defect. Architectonics of the walls of the frontal sinus was restored, pyoinflammation in the sinus was absent, passability of the frontonasal anastomosis was unaffected.

ABSTRACT

The comparison of the efficacy of a number of antibacterial drugs in acute pyoinflammatory ENT diseases allowed the authors to recommend moxifloxacin as most effective in acute purulent ENT pathology. Moxifloxacin demonstrated its superiority in seeding (the highest sensitivity of the bacteria to this antibiotic), in the speed of development of the bactericidal action and in treatment results. The drug had no significant side effects.

ABSTRACT

Qualitative and quantitative examinations of the microflora in a postoperative cavity of 62 patients early after radical surgery on the maxilla with opening of the ethmoidal labyrinth have found that in spite of a noticeable antibacterial effect of the operation pyoinflammatory process in the wound is possible. Treatment basing on bacteriological findings is recommended.

ABSTRACT

Immune status was examined before and after tonsillectomy in 35 patients with various forms of chronic tonsillitis (CT). Measurements were made of main lymphocyte populations, IgA, IgG, IgM levels, functional activity of neutrophils, titers of antibodies to opportunistic microorganisms of the upper airways. It is shown that tonsillectomy produces positive changes in some immunological indices: serum IgG normalized, titers of antibodies to Haemophillus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and streptolysin-0 lowered, initially low count of B-lymphocytes, natural killers, T-helpers rose, neutrophil chemiluminescence normalized.

ABSTRACT

Disorders in lacrimal passage are often caused by anatomotopographic peculiarities of the nasolacrimal tract. Surgical treatments of such patients are reviewed. The authors made endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy in 34 patients with good results. How to achieve good functional outcomes is described.

ABSTRACT

30 patients with chronic tonsillitis (CT) and 20 patients with chronic sinusitis (CS) received likopid (4 mg/day for 10 days). CT patients were additionally treated with tonsil lacunar lavage with dioxidine solution. Likopid was found effective in CT patients (good response--31%, partial response--59%). 9% did not respond to likopid. CS patients benefited less (good response--10%, partial response--50%). 40% were non-responders. In CT patients likopid demonstrated also an immunomodulating effect. Positive changes were observed in the counts of B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes, T-helpers, natural killers, level of serum IgG, titers of specific antibodies, functional activity of neutrophils. In CS this effect was less pronounced.
