ABSTRACT

The structure of the solid-liquid interface formed by muscovite mica in contact with two divalent ionic solutions (SrCl2 and BaCl2) is determined using in situ surface X-ray diffraction using both specular and non-specular crystal truncation rods. The 0.5 monolayer of monovalent potassium present at the surface after cleavage is replaced by approximately 0.25 monolayer of divalent ions, closely corresponding to ideal charge compensation within the Stern layer in both cases. The adsorption site of the divalent ions is determined to be in the surface ditrigonal cavities with minor out-of-plane relaxations that are consistent with their ionic radii. The divalent ions are adsorbed in a partly hydrated state (partial solvation sphere). The liquid ordering induced by the presence of the highly ordered crystalline mica is limited to the first 8-10 Å from the topmost crystalline surface layer. These results partly agree with previous studies in terms of interface composition, but there are significant differences regarding the structural details of these interfaces.

ABSTRACT

Our in situ X-ray study shows that a silicon substrate in contact with an undersaturated In(Ge) solution is wetted by an approximately 1 nm thin germanium film, which does not grow any thicker. The results can be understood by the use of thickness-dependent correlated interfacial energies. This near-equilibrium heterogeneous interface structure marks the initial stage of crystal growth before the formation of bulk material, which can only form under conditions of supersaturation. This finding uncovers a fundamental aspect of the thermodynamics at solid-liquid interfaces relevant for understanding the transition from equilibrium to supersaturation and is of importance for nanoscale solution growth methods.

ABSTRACT

The solid-liquid interface formed by single terminated muscovite mica in contact with two different ionic solutions is analyzed using surface X-ray diffraction. Specular and nonspecular crystal truncation rods of freshly cleaved mica immersed in CsCl or RbBr aqueous solution were measured. The half monolayer of the surface potassium ions present after the cleavage is completely replaced by the positive ions (Cs+ or Rb+) from the solution. These ions are located in the ditrigonal surface cavities with small outward relaxations with respect to the bulk potassium position. We find evidence for the presence of a partly ordered hydration shell around the surface Cs+ or Rb+ ions and partly ordered negative ions in the solution. The lateral liquid ordering induced by the crystalline surface vanishes at distances larger than 5 Å from the surface.

ABSTRACT

Novel vaccines are needed to control tuberculosis (TB), the bacterial infectious disease that together with malaria and HIV is worldwide responsible for high levels of morbidity and mortality. TB can result from the reactivation of an initially controlled latent infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Mtb proteins for which a possible role in this reactivation process has been hypothesized are the five homologs of the resuscitation-promoting factor of Micrococcus luteus, namely Mtb Rv0867c (rpfA), Rv1009 (rpfB), Rv1884c (rpfC), Rv2389c (rpfD) and Rv2450c (rpfE). Analysis of the immune recognition of these 5 proteins following Mtb infection or Mycobacterium bovis BCG vaccination of mice showed that Rv1009 (rpfB) and Rv2389c (rpfD) are the most antigenic in the tested models. We therefore selected rpfB and rpfD for testing their vaccine potential as plasmid DNA vaccines. Elevated cellular immune responses and modest but significant protection against intra-tracheal Mtb challenge were induced by immunization with the rpfB encoding DNA vaccine. The results indicate that rpfB is the most promising candidate of the five rpf-like proteins of Mtb in terms of its immunogenicity and protective efficacy and warrants further analysis for inclusion as an antigen in novel TB vaccines.

ABSTRACT

We report an in situ surface X-ray diffraction study of liquid AuIn metal alloys in contact with zinc-blende InP (111)(B) substrates at elevated temperatures. We observe strong layering of the liquid metal alloy in the first three atomic layers in contact with the substrate. The first atomic layer of the alloy has a higher indium concentration than in bulk. In addition, in this first layer we find evidence for in-plane ordering at hollow sites, which could sterically hinder nucleation of zinc-blende InP. This can explain the typical formation of the wurtzite crystal structure in InP nanowires grown from AuIn metal particles.

ABSTRACT

Leptin is a hormone that reduces excitability in some hypothalamic neurons via leptin receptor activation of the JAK2 and PI3K intracellular signaling pathways. We hypothesized that leptin receptor activation in other neuronal subtypes would have anticonvulsant activity and that intranasal leptin delivery would be an effective route of administration. We tested leptin's anticonvulsant action in 2 rodent seizure models by directly injecting it into the cortex or by administering it intranasally. Focal seizures in rats were induced by neocortical injections of 4-aminopyridine, an inhibitor of voltage-gated K+ channels. These seizures were briefer and less frequent upon coinjection of 4-aminopyridine and leptin. In mice, intranasal administration of leptin produced elevated brain and serum leptin levels and delayed the onset of chemical convulsant pentylenetetrazole-induced generalized convulsive seizures. Leptin also reduced neuronal spiking in an in vitro seizure model. Leptin inhibited alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole proprionic acid (AMPA) receptor-mediated synaptic transmission in mouse hippocampal slices but failed to inhibit synaptic responses in slices from leptin receptor-deficient db/db mice. JAK2 and PI3K antagonists prevented leptin inhibition of AMPAergic synaptic transmission. We conclude that leptin receptor activation and JAK2/PI3K signaling may be novel targets for anticonvulsant treatments. Intranasal leptin administration may have potential as an acute abortive treatment for convulsive seizures in emergency situations.
