ABSTRACT

Rhinoplasty is a difficult procedure to record for several reasons which include the narrow, dark and deep surgical field cluttered with many instruments, and the heads and hands of the surgical team often blocking the view. This study discusses 13 rhinoplasty cases that were recorded using the authors' technique. A three-minute, unedited segment was extracted from the mid-portion of each surgical case, and that footage was evaluated by three specialist examiners. Results indicate that the authors' technique can offer a effective solution in the video recording of the nasal-dorsal part of a rhinoplasty.

ABSTRACT

AIM: There are limited studies that indicate the effects of trampoline exercise on strength and other physiological parameters. This study aims to determine whether twelve weeks of trampoline exercise would have any effects on the physical and physiological parameters of male gymnasts. METHODS: A number of 20 intercollegiate competitive male gymnasts (as experimental group) and 20 non-athlete male (as control group) participated voluntarily. Their anthropometric characteristics and the anaerobic power were measured and their back strength, vertical jump, standing long jump and 20 meter sprint performances were measured. RESULTS: As a result; whereas 12 weeks of trampoline exercise improved standing long jump (before 242.35±3.40 cm; after 251.70±2.95 cm) and also vertical jump, 20 meter sprint speed and anaerobic power of subjects. We did not observe significant changes on back strength performances (before 148.32±5.73 kg; after 148.10±5.71). CONCLUSION: The trampoline exercise protocol improved significantly speed, jump and anaerobic performances of the experimental group, while did not induced any changes on back strength performances. More studies are necessary to confirm the interesting results coming from this pilot intervention.

ABSTRACT

A 48-year-old woman presented with red papules on the thigh. Histopathological examination indicated pyogenic granuloma, and the patient was treated with total excision in 2003 and electrocauterization in 2005. Three months later, upon recurrence of the lesions, a diagnosis of composite haemangioendothelioma (CHE) was made. The patient was treated by total excision and lymph-node dissection, which revealed inguinal lymph-node metastasis. Despite the surgery, a further local recurrence occurred, subsequently treated by wide excision en bloc, with adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Although CHE is defined as a vascular tumour with low-grade malignancy, the local recurrences and lymph-node metastases resulted in treatment difficulties in this case. Unlike earlier cases, the tumour in our patient presented as localized numerous small papulonodules, and lymph-node metastasis was detected within a relatively short time. Dermatologists and pathologists should be aware of this rare condition and include it in the differential diagnosis of vascular lesions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory marker that predicts coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. Diabetes mellitus (DM) counts as a CHD risk equivalent. We aimed to compare serum high sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) levels in Type 2 diabetic (T2DM) men without CHD, non-diabetic CHD patients and T2DM patients with CHD. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Four groups were formed; Group 1 [DM(+), CHD(-), no.=25], Group 2 [DM(-), CHD(+) no.=25], Group 3 [DM(+), CHD(+), no.=25], and Group 4 (controls, no.=30). Serum hs-CRP, insulin, glucose, total, HDL-, LDL- and VLDL-cholesterol, triglyceride levels and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index were determined. RESULTS: Mean hs-CRP level of Group 1 (0.6+/-0.29) was not different statistically from Group 2 (1.44+/-0.97). Mean hs-CRP levels were higher in men with CHD, whether they were diabetic (Group 3; 3.83+/-2.01 mg/dl) or non-diabetic (Group 4), than in control subjects (0.16+/-0.15; p=0.0001 and p<0.004, respectively). Mean hs-CRP level of Group 3 was also higher than Group 2 (p=0.0001). There was a positive correlation between serum hs-CRP and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c; r=0.277, p<0.01), fasting insulin (r=0.336, p<0.02) and HOMA-IR (r=0.348, p<0.02) in T2DM men with or without CHD. CONCLUSIONS: T2DM men without CHD had similar CRP levels with non-diabetic CHD patients, whereas CRP levels of T2DM men with CHD were higher than non-diabetic men with CHD. Because of a positive correlation between serum hs-CRP and HbA1c, fasting insulin and HOMA-IR, inflammation, insulin resistance and hyperglycemia jointly contribute to the cardiovascular risk in T2DM men.

ABSTRACT

We present the case of an unusually located intracranial lipoma in a 17-year-old patient with partial epilepsy who was being controlled with medication. The lipoma was located deep in the left sylvian fissure, in the inferior parietal lobule, associated with cortical dysplasia of the surrounding supramarginal gyrus. Abnormal vasculature was detected adjacent to and within the adipose mass. The findings of the imaging studies that included CT, MR imaging, and MR angiography, are described along with a brief review of the literature.

ABSTRACT

Increases in penile circumference during sleep-related erections in human subjects closely reflected increases in penile blood flow, and bursts of activity in the bulbocavernosus and ischiocavernosus muscles were temporally related to these increases. The penile arterial system and the perineal muscles appear to have important coordinated roles in human penile erection. Monitoring sleep-related erections and penile blood flow holds promise for the study of erectile mechanisms and dysfunction and for screening of drugs.
