ABSTRACT

PIP: The author reports findings from a study involving 47 males and 64 females aged 13-18 years, of mean age 16, attending the Phipps and Duncan Centers Police Athletic Leagues. 72% were African-American and 20% Latino. The participants first completed an attitude and belief scale with regard to their sex behavior and intentions to use condoms. 84 returned 30 days later to complete the behavior scale, assessing whether they had had sex and used condoms during the preceding 30 days. There were no significant differences between the adolescents who filled out the behavior scale and those who dropped out of the study with regard to age, gender, ethnicity, beliefs, or intentions. 49% reported having sex over the period, with teens aged 16-18 years most likely to report such behavior. 68% and 32% of these men and women, respectively, who had sex reported using condoms during the past 30 days. 31% of both men and women reported their intentions to have sex during the next 30 days, while 63% of the total sample reported their intentions to use a condom if, indeed, they did have sex. Findings with regard to personal factor/behavioral beliefs, social factor/normative beliefs, motivation to comply, and intention and behavior are discussed, followed by consideration of intervention implications.^ieng
