ABSTRACT

The aim was to evaluate treatment outcomes after apicoectomy and apexification in adjacent non-vital maxillary central incisors with large periapical radiolucencies, in a 10-year-old boy. The patient had complained of tenderness in the upper central incisors on mastication and gave a history of trauma to those teeth three years ago. On examination, there were found to be non-vital. Apexification (using Metapex) and apicoectomy (obturation with gutta percha) were performed on 11 and 21, respectively. Radiographical observations were made six months, one year and two years, post-operatively. Apical repair was found to be more favorable after apicoectomy than apexification, for a non-vital maxillary central incisor with an open apex and large periapical radiolucency.

ABSTRACT

These case reports highlight dental treatment abuse performed by a quack on children. The anterior teeth of these children were metal capped using cement, which were otherwise healthy. The treatment was done on children without parental consent by a quack from Denmark who gave the reason as for resolving proclination of upper permanent incisors. The unanatomic, unaesthetic metal caps were removed after the child reported to the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry.

ABSTRACT

Radicular cysts are the most common cystic lesions which affect the jaw. They are most common among all the jaw cysts and comprise about 52% to 68% of the entire cysts which affect the human jaw. They are generally symptomless and are diagnosed during routine radiologic investigations. The treatment of radicular cysts includes conventional nonsurgical root canal therapy when lesion is localized or surgical treatment like enucleation, marsupialization or decompression when lesion is large. This case report presents the successful surgical management of a large infected radicular cyst which was associated with maxillary central incisor with open apex.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Tooth whitening products enjoy substantial popularity. However, tooth hypersensitivity is invariably an undesirable consequence. Desensitizing toothpastes may be used for alleviating the symptoms. NovaMin, as an active ingredient in many dentifrices, has been shown to deliver significant therapeutic desensitising benefits. AIM: To study the effect of NovaMin desensitising toothpaste mixed with 15% carbamide peroxide on tooth bleaching and tubule occlusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was carried out in vitro, on extracted premolars which were bleached, using the above mentioned mixture and shade change was evaluated. They were then sectioned to be observed under a scanning Electron Microscope. The number of completely and partially blocked tubules as well as open tubules were counted for each specimen. Statistical analysis for shade change was done by using paired t-test. Mean and Standard deviation were calculated for the tubule counts and they were analyzed statistically. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicated that the addition of NovaMin to 15% Carbamide peroxide occluded the dentinal tubules and that it did not affect the bleaching procedure. They also emphasized its clinical relevance in a dual advantage of desensitizing and bleaching with a single paste system.

ABSTRACT

The aim was to compare the vertex occlusal projection with the anterior maxillary occlusal projection in localizing the position of mesiodentes. Mesiodentes were observed in an 8-year-old boy with an anterior maxillary occlusal radiograph. A vertex occlusal radiograph was taken to compare it with the former in terms of mesiodentes localization with respect to the maxillary central incisors. The vertex occlusal radiograph provided greater details of the position and proximity of mesiodentes with respect to the long axis of maxillary central incisors in comparison to the anterior maxillary occlusal radiograph. Vertex occlusal radiography is an important diagnostic tool in diagnosing the presence, position, and proximity of mesiodentes with respect to the long axis of normally aligned maxillary central incisors. However, it is not recommended for routine use in a patient as its radiation dose is higher than conventional intraoral radiographic methods.
