ABSTRACT

Radiation exposure of critical organs and tissues to external x-ray radiation and internal irradiation from a RP was estimated on the basis of analysis of dosimetric investigations during electron x-ray scanning in 645 cancer patients. Radiation exposure of critical organs and tissues during electron x-ray scanning was shown to depend on the properties of PRs and on the location of a beam of x-ray radiation with relation to an organ. During the use of electron x-ray scanning equivalent doses exceeded doses of short-lived PRs (113mIn, 99mTc) and, on the contrary, at administration of such RPs as 75Se, 67Ga, 85Sr these doses were much lower.

ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with the results of interstitial radiotherapy of 31 patients aged 30 to 76. Of them 18 patients had recurrences or metastases to the vagina, 9 patients--vulvar cancer, 4 patients--vaginal cancer. Interstitial radiotherapy with Co and 252Cf sources was used. A method of successive manual administration of intrastats and ionizing radiation sources was employed. The chief modality was interstitial radiotherapy supplemented with teletherapy or application gamma-beam therapy taking into account the time and doses of previous radiotherapy. Complete tumor regression was observed over time (4-27 mos.) in 23 (74.2%) of 31 patients. Radiation effects were manifested in hyperemia, edema of the mucous membrane and filmy epitheliitis at the site of administration of radioactive sources. Interstitial therapy can be a method of choice for a certain group of patients, especially in case of a limited tumor without infiltration to the adjacent organs.

ABSTRACT

Results of the clinical use of positive electroroentgenography for examination of the esophagus and stomach in 437 patients are analysed. Different pathology of the esophagus and stomach was detected in 313 patients including esophageal and stomach cancer in 144 patients. Some problems related to the quality of positive electroroentgenograms, parameters and conditions, and some features of positive electroroentgenographic visualization of the esophagus and stomach are discussed. Positive electroroentgenography has been found superior during examination with a double contrast method and in the detection of tumor pathology. Dosimetry of radiation exposure of patients during positive electroroentgenography of the stomach and esophagus was done. Input exposure and integral absorbed doses in electroroentgenography turned out to be lower than those in film roentgenography.
