ABSTRACT

The drug-food interaction has a great interest in nutrition research to minimize unfavorable reactions to nutritional treatment. Failure to supply appropriate nutrition to the child can harm both body development and growth. This review aimed to examine available data on the impact of diet on medication absorption in pediatric populations. Mechanisms underlying food-drug interactions were investigated to explore possible distinctions between adult and pediatric populations and to gain insight into how this may impact the pharmacokinetic profile in a child. Several changes in physiology, anatomy and physicochemical properties among children are likely to result in food-drug interactions that cannot be anticipated based on adult studies. The influence of food on medications results in decreased bioavailability and altered drug elimination. Drugs, on the other hand, can affect dietary intake, digestion, absorption and excretion. Literature shows that differences in gastrointestinal physiology and anatomy between pediatric and adult populations can have a major impact on drug absorption and bioavailability. A higher splanchnic blood flow may result in decreased drug bioavailability due to increased loss in first-pass metabolism. To overcome the overall lack of knowledge on analyzing food-drug interactions among pediatric populations, comprehensive procedures and recommendations must be developed.

ABSTRACT

Eliminating hazardous contaminants is a necessity for maintaining a healthy environment on Earth. This work used a sustainable method to create Iron-Zinc nanocomposites with polyvinyl alcohol assistance. Mentha Piperita (mint leaf) extract was used as a reductant in the green synthesis of bimetallic nanocomposites. Doping with Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) caused a reduction in crystallite size and greater lattice parameters. XRD, FTIR, EDS, and SEM techniques were used to establish their surface morphology and structural characterization. The high-performance nanocomposites were used to remove malachite green (MG) dye using the ultrasonic adsorption technique. Adsorption experiments were designed by central composite design and optimized by response surface methodology. According to this study, 77.87% of the dye was removed at the optimum optimized parameters (10.0 mg L-1 was the concentration of MG dye at a time of 8.0 min, pH 9.0, and 0.02 g of adsorbent amount) with adsorption capacity up to 92.59 mg·g-1. The dye adsorption followed Freundlich's isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic analysis affirmed the spontaneous nature of adsorption due to negative ΔGo values. As a result, the suggested approach offers a framework for creating an effective and affordable technique to remove the dye from a simulated wastewater system for environmental conservation.

ABSTRACT

The combination of disorder of sex development and canal of Nuck hernia, in which the hernial sac contains the internal reproductive organs (gonads) of both genders, is exceedingly rare. We present a unique case of a neonate who presented with ambiguous genitalia and a lump in the left inguinal region. The child underwent various radiographic procedures and hernial repair. Blood work-up, karyotyping, and histopathological analysis from gonads confirmed the diagnosis of Ovotesticular disorder of sex development. Subsequently, the child had a reconstructive vaginoplasty, and the final decision regarding gender assignment will be made after assessing mental and sexual behavior in early childhood.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Anti-sperm antibodies (ASAs) treatment continued to be neglected. This study aimed to generate ASAs using the testicular sperm aspiration (TSA) rat model, which allowed for investigation of four distinct therapeutic approaches to find potential treatments for ASAs. Materials and Methods: Adult Wistar albino male rats were divided into six equal groups (n = 12). The negative control group underwent scrotal sac surgery without having their testicles punctured. Punctures were made in the remaining 5 groups, with one group left untreated to serve as the positive control group. The remaining 4 groups were treated with either dexamethasone (DEX), azathioprine (AZA), frankincense, or anti-ASAs secondary antibodies. For 10 weeks, serum samples were collected every 2 weeks for specific quantification of ASAs. Testis and epididymis tissues were collected for histopathological analysis. Results: The ASAs concentrations of the positive controls were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.001) than their negative control counterparts during the examined weeks. However, The ASAs indices (%) differed according to the treatment type. While the ASAs indices at the 2nd and 4th weeks in the AZA-treated group were significantly reduced compared to the positive control group (p ≤ 0.001), no significant differences were observed at any of the sample collection week for the DEX-treated rats. The ASAs indices were significantly decreased only at weeks 6 and 8 of treatment in the frankincense-treated group (p ≤ 0.001). In the secondary antibodies-treated group, the antibody indices were significantly decreased in all weeks except for samples collected at week 4 (p ≤ 0.001). The testosterone levels reverted to normal only in TSA rats treated with either Frankincense or secondary antibodies, as they were significantly higher than the positive controls (p ≤ 0.05). Tissue samples from the secondary antibody-treated rats showed a generally normal histological appearance. Conclusion: This study tried to offer realistic therapy suggestions; however, caution should be applied when extrapolating findings from experimental models to meet clinical requirements.

ABSTRACT

We describe a unique case of perivascular epithelioid cell tumors occurring as mediastinal and left renal soft tissue masses discovered incidentally in a 5-year-old tuberous sclerosis patient upon presentation to the emergency department for upper respiratory illness. The radiographic features were non-specific. However, the similar CT characteristics of both lesions and background history raised the suspicion of a synchronous mesenchymal tumor, and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. The rarity of these tumors in the pediatric population and lack of specific diagnostic criteria impose reporting the case and emphasize the need for further research on imaging features of such tumors.

Water is an important component of our life. However, the unavailability of fresh water and its contamination are emerging problems. The textile industries are the major suppliers of contamination of water, producing high concentrations of heavy metals and hazardous dyes posing serious health hazards. Several technologies for water purification are available in the market. Among them, the membrane technology is a highly advantageous and facile strategy to remediate wastewater. Herein, the distinguished combination of pore-forming agents, solvent, and nanoparticles has been used to achieve improved functioning of the polymeric composite membranes. To do so, graphene oxide (GO) was fabricated via Hummer's technique and GO functionalization using chloroacetic acid (c-GO) was performed. Thermoplastic polyurathane (TPU) membranes having different concentrations c-GO were made using the phase inversion technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to examine surface morphology, chemical functionalities on membranes surfaces, and crystallinity of membranes, respectively. The temperature-dependent behavior of c-GO composite membranes has been analyzed using DSC technique. The water contact angle measurements were performed for the estimation of hydrophilicity of the c-GO based TPU membrane. The improved water permeability of the composite membrane was observed with increasing the c-GO concentration in polymeric membranes. c-GO was observed as a potential candidate that enhanced membrane physicochemical properties. The proposed membranes can behave as efficient candidates in multiple domains of environmental remediation. Furthermore, the improved dye rejection characteristics of proposed composite membranes suggest that the membranes can be best suited for wastewater treatment as well.

ABSTRACT

Environmental pollution has exacerbated the availability of clean water to mankind. In this study, Azadirachta indica leaf extract was used for sustainable synthesis of Fe-Zn nanocomposites (IZNC). The instrumental techniques of Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to determine the structural and chemical composition. The overall surface was mildly acidic in nature, as the pHPZC was observed to be 6.00. The ultrasonicated adsorption experiments were designed by central composite design (CCD). The best responses, which proposed a contaminants removal of 80.39%, were assessed using the response surface methodology (RSM). By repeating experimental runs at the expected optimum operating parameters (OOP), the method was experimentally affirmed with the %mean error and %RSD9 being 2.695% and 1.648%, respectively. The interaction of CV dye and the nanocomposite showed tremendous adsorption efficiency towards crystal violet (CV) dye, as revealed by isotherm studies. Fitting kinetics and isotherm models were affirmed by root mean square error (RMSE), χ2, and a Pearson regression coefficient. Thermodynamic studies proved spontaneity of the CV dye adsorption over the nanocomposites. The values for ΔGo, ΔHo, and ΔSo were observed to be -1.089 kJ/mol, 28.59 kJ/mol, and -3.546 kJ/mol, respectively. Recovery of CV dye was carried out in a variety of media, including NaOH, NaCl, and CH3COOH. The maximum CV recovery was achieved in an acidic media. The robustness of adsorption was affirmed by the interference of various matrix ions, including KCl, LiCl, NaCl, and MgCl2, which did not significantly affect the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at a low concentration of LiCl. The results show that a green synthesis approach for nanocomposite synthesis might be an effective and economical way to remove organic contaminants from wastewater. Moreover, it is also effective for effluent treatment plants (ETP) for waste management purposes, in which it may be coupled with chlorine as a disinfectant to purify water that can be used for domestic and irrigation purposes.

ABSTRACT

<b>Background and Objective:</b> Stevia (<i>Stevia rebaudiana</i>), often known as sweet leaf, is a perennial plant and a member of the Asteraceae family. The commercial version of stevia leaf powder, known as Steviana, is one of the most popular natural sweeteners in use today. The current study aimed to analyze the activities of gut digestive enzymes, intestinal oxidative state and intestinal histological structure in stevia-fed rats. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> In this study, male rats were given Steviana and the oxidative condition of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), the activities of certain digestive enzymes and the histomorphology of the GIT were examined. Animals used in experiments were split into 2 groups: Control and treated groups. For four consecutive weeks, the treatment group received a daily oral intake of 5 mg kg<sup>1</sup> b.wt., of Steviana solution. At the end of the trial, serum, pancreas and intestinal tissue samples were taken. <b>Results:</b> The Steviana sweetener has a strong antioxidative effect on both blood and intestinal tissue. Both sample types showed a decrease in malondialdehyde levels and a marked increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities compared to control samples. In samples of blood, pancreas and intestinal contents, the activities of digestive enzymes including α-amylase, lipase and protease were significantly elevated in Steviana-treated rats. In addition, histological analysis of the small intestine showed that in rats given Steviana sweetener, intestinal glandular crypt depth was more pronounced compared to the control animals. <b>Conclusion:</b> In summary, consumption of Steviana appears to enhance digestion and absorption processes through antioxidative effects, improving the health of the local GIT and subsequently accelerating the rate of synthesis and release of endogenous digestive enzymes. Another aspect that enhances the digestion and absorption process is the change in the histological structure of the intestinal glands, as shown by an increase in the crypt depth.

ABSTRACT

A sensitive voltammetric method was described for the determination of escitalopram oxalate based on electrocatalytic oxidation at nickel nanoparticles modified chloranil carbon paste sensor in Britton-Robinson buffer (pH range from 2 to 10). The modified electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance and cyclic voltammetry. The investigation of electrochemical behavior of escitalopram oxalate was performed using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The anodic peak current showed a linear range from 1.0 × 10-6 to 7.0 × 10-5 mol L-1. The detection limit is below 2.0 × 10-7 mol L-1. The proposed method is rapid, economical, simple, precise and sensitive voltammetric method for the determination of escitalopram oxalate in bulk, dosage form and urine.
