ABSTRACT

Background: The largest buffalo herd in Brazil is located on the Island of Marajó, in the State of Pará, northern Brazil. The pastures of the Island of Marajó consist of low quality graminaceous plants, which are generally poor in protein and mineral content. Unbalanced diets associated with low quality pastures are responsible for latent, sub-clinical diseases and metabolic disorders in bovines which affect bone health, especially in periods such as pregnancy and lactation. The purpose of this study was to point out and to describe the radiographic bone changes of buffalos with low body index bred in extensive system and intended for slaughter on the Island of Marajó, Brazil.Materials, Methods & Results: Radiographic examinations of anatomical pieces were obtained from 34 animals of buffalo species, with no distinction of gender, age, or breed. The animals were selected among those that were in the stockyard waiting for slaughtering for the obtainment of the anatomical pieces. For this selection, low physical condition was considered, which mainly included individuals with body condition indexes (ICC) of 1 and 2, on a scale of 1 to 5. From this selection, 98 anatomical pieces were obtained, which included: 28 sets of ribs, 20 femurs, 26 metacarpus, 7 mandibles, 3 radius and ulnas, 4 sets of vertebrae, 4 sets of metacarpus and phalanges, 1 tarsus and 1 set of tarsus and met

ABSTRACT

This work reports the occurrence of Platynosomum illiciens in a nonhuman Chiropotes utahicki primate species held captive by the National Center of Primates (CENP) in Ananindeua-PA. The animal underwent a clinical, blood, parasitological and ultrasound evaluation in which there was presence of diarrhea and discrete lack of appetite, significant changes in the hepatic serum samples, the observation of eggs consistent with the Platynosomum illiciens sedimentation exam and the presence of vegetative mass inside the biliary vesicle as well as the dilatation and thickening of its wall. Thus, the inclusion of platinosomiasis as a differential diagnosis in cases of hepatic diseases is suggested, especially when coupled with favorable conditions such as tropical regions and environments around native forests, emphasizing the importance of investigating the epidemiology and the relevance of this disease for the conservation and care of primates.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The Saimiri sciureus is a non human primate that exists in the amazon region, which is not in the list of endangered animals according to IBAMA. So, this research systemized the collateral branches visceral of the abdominal aorta of these animals. It was used six animals, three males and three females, which had the circulatory system filled with latex Neoprene added of radiographic contrast. The results showed that the abdominal aorta ventrally emitted a collateral visceral branch called celiac artery, which originates three branches: left gastric, hepatic and lienal arteries. The branches of the celiac artery promoted the irrigation of the stomach, duodenum, liver, pancreas and spleen. Then the abdominal aorta emitted the cranial mesenteric artery, which was of a larger size than the celiac artery and was caudally juxtaposed. The cranial mesenteric artery supply branches that irrigate the final portion of the duodenum, pancreas, jejunum, ileum, cecum and colon. Abdominal aorta emitted laterally the right and left kidney arteries. The left adrenal artery as a collateral branch of the celiac artery and the right adrenal artery has been originated in the right renal artery. The mesenteric caudal artery was emitted from the ventral surface of the abdominal aorta, below the kidney arteries. In L6, abdominal aorta has two derivations to origin the right and left external iliac arteries and these had given origin to the internal iliac and femoral artery right and left. The testicular or ovary arteries were emitted in internal iliac arteries. Of the abdominal aorta led to origin the sacral median artery and in this sequence there is the caudal median artery. The study of this specie is very important to generate knowledge about non human primates existing in our country. It can be said that Saimiri sciureus is an important biological model for development of biomedical researches.

A artéria mesentérica cranial emitiu ramos que vascularizaram a parte final do duodeno, pâncreas, jejuno, íleo, ceco, cólon maior e cólon menor. A aorta abdominal emitiu lateralmente as artérias renais direita e esquerda.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the powdered coconut water (PCW) in the semen conservation and seminal clot liquefaction. The semen of six adult male Cebus apella was collected by electroejaculation (EEJ), diluted in ACP-118® extender and stayed in water bath at 33, 35 and 37°C for 24 hours. The sperm integrity was evaluated by eosin-nigrosine staining every one hour during the six initial hours and after 24 hours of incubation. The average volumes and sperm concentrations of clotted and liquid fractions were 0.20±0.02 and 0.20±0.10mL, 1.1±0.3x108 and 1.3±0.9x107 sperm mL-1, respectively. Immediately after collection, only in a sample of liquid fraction was observed 20% motility and vigor 4, which stopped after 40 minutes. Most of the clot was liquefied in ACP-118® after 12 hours of incubation. The best observed treatment was 33°C, because it kept 47±12.8% of sperm integrity after 24 hours. It was concluded that the PCW extender is effective in the liquefaction of seminal clot and maintenance of sperm viability 24 hours after the EEJ at 33, 35 and 37°C.

ABSTRACT

The aim this study was to evaluate the efficiency of in natura coconut water solution at 37º C as seminal extender. Were analyzed fifteen ejaculates collected from 5 adult Cebus apella by electroejaculation. The means volumes of liquid and coagulated fractions were 0.26 + 0.06 mL and 0.98 + 0.02 mL, respectively. The sperm concentration in the liquid fraction (2.1 x 108 + 0.5 108 mL) was lower than liquefied fraction (1.6 x 109+ 0.9 109 mL) (p = 0.05). The mean percentage of live spermatozoa after 7 hours incubated at 37 C was 72 + 3%. Only in one sample was observed sperm motility (20%) and vigor (2). The results suggest that electroejaculation protocol using 100mA maximum amperage is efficient to obtain semen from adult Cebus apella. The coconut water extender can be used to maintain sperm viability for up to 7 hours at 37 C. However, studies are necessary to evaluate the sperm functionality extended in natura coconut water based solution.KEY WORDS: Cebus apella, electroejaculation water, extender, semen.

ABSTRACT

This study sought to assess anatomopathological aspects of a case of testicular atrophy in a specimen of Alouatta caraya kept in captivity at the Centro Nacional de Primatas - CENP/SVS/MS. Semen and biometrical exams were performed for the testicles. The results demonstrated that the animal presented azoospermia and in the biometric exam the right testicle presented an average volume of 0.438cm and the left one 0.407cm, values considerably below of those recorded in the literature for normal males of the species. Upon inspection, both testicles presented a firmer consistency that usual and the parenchyma cut was darker. The histopathological exam revealed a marked reduction in the number of seminiferous tubules; some were totally atrophied and hyalinized. In others there was an absence of the germinative epithelium and presence of vacuolized Sertoli cells while the interstitial (Leydig) cells were found proliferated. It is concluded that gonadopathy was the result of a degenerative process, with the lesion at a stage of chronicity. Keywords: Alouatta caraya, testicular atrophy, reproduction.

However, studies are necessary to evaluate the sperm functionality extended in natura coconut water based solution.KEY WORDS: Cebus apella, electroejaculation water, extender, semen.
