ABSTRACT

Previous studies revealed significant phenotypic plasticity, genetic variability and population differentiation of flower morphometric traits on dwarf bearded iris Iris pumila. Also, study of I. pumila flowering phenology revealed significant impact of habitat type as well as population differentiation for flowering time. Since the flowering time can influence other flower traits, we performed this analysis of flower morphometric traits in three time points during the flower bud ontogenic development in two habitat types (open vs. shaded). Analysis revealed that for most of the traits greater trait values were recorded for open habitat but only on latter time points. For most of the analyzed traits direction of differences in bud stage was the opposite to the direction of differences in mature flower stage detected in previous studies. However, length of the stem, a trait that showed the greatest variability between habitats and populations and therefore greatest genetic differentiation and phenotypic plasticity, was significantly greater in the samples from the late flowering shaded habitat in all time samples, indicating that in case of this trait different mechanisms were involved. Those findings have implications for design of the future studies on I. pumila.

ABSTRACT

Response to environmental heterogeneity caused by human activity was analyzed on Iris pumila reciprocal transplants between native steppe and anthropogenic (planted pine forest) habitats that were monitored during several growing seasons in a protected area of Deliblato Sand. Morphometric traits exhibited significant plastic responses to the environmental variability between native and anthropogenic habitats that differed in light quantity and quality, as well as in some other ecological indices. Significant differentiation between populations occupying those habitats was also detected. Plastic responses and population differences were substantially related to the variation in general size and had the same direction, plastic responses being larger in magnitude. Estimates of reproductive and vegetative performance of reciprocal transplants detected home site advantage in the native open but not in the secondary shade habitat created under anthropogenic influence.

ABSTRACT

Aortoenteric fistula represents a communication between aortic and duodenal lumen. It is a very rare complication of aortic aneurysmal disease as well as aortic prosthetic surgery. There are only few surgeons who have seen more than one case of aortoenteric fistula. At the Institute of Surgery one case of aortoenteric fistula was treated. It was well diagnosed at the Institute for Internal Medicine, and then presented to the vascular surgeon who operated immediately. The whole diagnostic and therapeutic procedure was well done, but stenosing carcinoma of ascendent colon was found during the operation. Resection were done leading to the dehiscence of bowel anastomosis and fatal outcome for the patient. This case is instructive in a diagnostic and surgical manner.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Trauma is a surgical disease and a leading cause of death in the population in the age of forties. The Institute for Surgery in Novi Sad (trauma center of the first rank) takes care of all injured people brought to the Institute either directly from the place of accident or from other centers. AIM OF THE STUDY: Retrospective analysis of the injured people treated at the Institute for Surgery in the period 1987-1996. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Multivariate analysis of the traumas from the register of the Institute for Surgery according to the trauma system elements: number of injured individuals, sex and age structure, categorization of injuries, etiology of injuries, distribution of serious injuries by regions, results obtained from the treatment of serious injuries. RESULTS: They show a global representation of all elements involved with injured people: due to moderately serious, serious and critically serious injuries 21.6% of patients were hospitalized; in the age of 29-30 years men with traumas caused on work or in traffic were predominant, while women with injuries caused by falling were predominant in the age of 60-69 years; drastically increased injuries caused by fire-arms in the period 1991-1993 were directly caused by the state of war and these injuries are still numerous; in case of hospitalized patients isolated trauma (80%) was predominant, multiple trauma was under 20% and polytrauma was registered in 5% of patients; after surgical treatment of injuries approximately 17% of patients were indicated for postoperative prolonged treatment and in intensive care unit at the Institute for Surgery; the average mortality of hospitalized patients was 5-7% but with extremely high mortality rate (< 70%) in the group of patients with polytraumas.

ABSTRACT

Between 1982 and 1991 we performed eight operations on seven patients with carotid artery aneurysms. Their mean age was 52.8 years (range: 20-67 years). Five aneurysms were atherosclerotic, one was associated with Marfan's syndrome, and two were pseudoaneurysms, one occurring after Dacron patch angioplasty and the other due to tuberculosis. Seven aneurysms were treated electively; one patient underwent an emergency surgical procedure. In one case, the internal carotid artery was ligated. Seven operations were reconstructive. No intraluminal shunt was used. No perioperative deaths occurred. Regressive hemiparesis and ipsilateral Horner's syndrome developed in one patient. The follow-up period ranged from six months to nine and a half years. One patient died of myocardial infarction three months after surgery.

ABSTRACT

During an experiment in bitches, the ovaries were placed sub-peritoneally beneath the skin of the abdominal wall preserving the infundibulo-pelvic ligament. A year later a relaparotomy was performed. No alterations were evidenced in the ovaries placed either sub-peritoneally of beneath the skin. In 7 patients of less than 36 years of age, during radical hysterectomy performed for cervical carcinoma the ovaries were placed intraperitoneally at the level of the lower kidney pole, preserving the vascularisation of the infundibulo-pelvic ligament. In one patient a cystic degeneration occurred on the right side, while the ultrasound control did not reveal any pathology in the rest of the patients. A year later the total urine estrogen levels were within normal ranges.

ABSTRACT

The interdisciplinary transplant team on Medical faculty--Novi Sad is formed at the beginning of the 1986, and first successfully cadaver binephrectomy was performed in April 1986, and kidneys was transported in Transplant Centre in Belgrade. The first human renal transplantation with cadaveric kidney was performed 20, May 1986, and result was excellent. The first human renal transplantation with living related kidney was performed 27, Sept 1986, and result also was excellent. During the last three years our transplant team performed 32 renal transplantations. cadaveric kidney transplantations - 25 living-related kidney transplantation - 6 kidney autotransplantation - 1 Our Concept and organisation of interdisciplinary transplant team in Medical Faculty--Novi Sad is the very efficacy model of organisation and at the same time the cheapest solution. In this paper we discuss our organization of human renal transplantation, and technique of donor-neprectomy (cadaveric and living-related) and cold perfusion of kidney with Collins solution. Our rules for implantation are shown as the Algorythm. At the end of this paper we present our results, based on three year's experience and list of the members of our interdisciplinary transplant team.

ABSTRACT

From 1983 to 1988 on the Department for Experimental Surgery 20 preservations of the liver has been done, with ice cold Euro- Collins and Ringer solutions, either with in situ or with on banch technique after fast expantation. On five dogs standard 55% left hepatectomy has been done and the right side preserved in situ. Partial heterotopic liver transplantation to the right iliac fossa was performed on five dogs. Total vascular exclusion of the liver and extracorporal inierior vena cava and jugular vein by pass with assisted circulation was performed on one dog, without assistance on four dogs. Total orthotopic liver transplantation was performed on two dogs. The surgical team practiced the technique of liver transplantation in experiment and liver resection with in situ technique and on banch technique.

ABSTRACT

Organ transplantation is predominantly vascular surgical procedure. Vascular aspects of renal transplantation are important in all surgical phases of this procedure: --donor-nephrectomy (living-related or cadaver nephrectomy)--include nephrectomy undamaged kidneys, each with good length of renal artery (with or without aortic patch), renal vein (with or without caval patch) and ureter --organ-ex situ-surgery (bench surgery) sometimes is necessary after cold perfusion with Collins solution --implant surgical procedure, which include--dissection of recipient vessels (localisation.) --venous anastomosis (type and technique) --arterial anastomosis (type and technique) --use of vascular grafts (autografts or alografts) for kidney revascularisation during implantation (???) In the period 1987-1988, in our Experimental Surgery Unit a total of 20 dogs were operated (experimental kidney autotransplantation) under the same surgical team. The aims of those experimental autotransplantations were: training of the surgical team for routine human renal transplantations and usefulness of vascular grafts (autografts or allografts) for kidney revascularisation. We divided animals into the three groups: The first group (5 dogs)--revascularisation using AUTOVENOUS grafts The second group (5 dogs)--revascularisation using ALLOGRAFTS (Dacron or e-PTFE-Goretex grafts) The third group (10 dogs)--direct revascularisation without vascular grafts (control group) The best results were in the third group (no early vascular thrombosis) especially with end-to-end arterial anastomosis (we prefer it) and end-to-side venous anastomosis. Unfortunately in the second group, results were bad (vascular anastomotic thrombosis in the all cases during the first 48 hours).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

ABSTRACT

The variations of arterial and venous hillar blood vessels in human kidneys are numerous and surgical transplant teams have to know them. It is very important during doner-nephrectomy for transplantation. Sometimes, after doner, nephrectomy and kidney cold perfusion with Collins, there is a need for vascular repair of kidney hillar blood vessels, using microvascular surgical technique. The aim of this repair is: to have a kidney with main renal artery of good length and size and with main renal vein of good length and size. This procedure is called: extracorporeal "ex-situ" vascular repair of kidney hillar blood vessels. In the period 1987-1988, in our Experimental Surgery Unit a total of 20 dogs were operated on (kidney autotransplantation) and only in four (4) dogs we found variations in numbers of kidneys arterial and venous hillar blood vessels (20%) and repaired those vessels after cold perfusion of kidney. One dog had kidney with double renal arteries and double renal veins, and we had to make fusion the both arteries into the main renal artery of good size (5 mm) and the both veins into the renal vein of good size (12 mm). Three dogs had kidneys with main trunk of renal artery and one important separate polar renal artery, and we had to make implantation of separate polar renal artery into the main trunk of renal artery (end-te-side vascular anastomosis). For those vascular reconstructions we used polipropilene 6-o or -o as suturae material and binocular (magnification 2.5 x). The hemodynamically results of those reconstructions immediately after kidney implantation were very satisfactory.

ABSTRACT

One hundred and thirty-two PTFE bifurcated prosthetic grafts were implanted during the course of a bicentre study conducted at the abovenamed institutions from 1982 to 1986. The study included 118 males and 14 females with an average age of 62 years. One hundred and eighteen patients suffered from aorto-iliac occlusive disease and 14 from abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). Five patients had already undergone previous surgery (redo operations), with extirpation of thrombosed Dacron prostheses. Proximal end to end anastomoses were fashioned in 94 cases (71.2%), while end to side anastomoses were performed in 38 cases (28.8%). The distal anastomoses were to the iliac arteries in 11 cases, the common femoral artery in 89 cases and the deep femoral artery in 32 cases.
