ABSTRACT

A 44-year-old male with schizophrenia presented with progressive right proptosis for one year and conjunctivitis for two months. An orbital cyst was seen in the superotemporal region on computerized tomography and was surgically removed. There was no history or radiological signs of paranasal sinus disease or previous trauma. Histopathologic evaluation revealed a cyst lined with respiratory epithelium. Respiratory choristomatous cysts of the orbit are considered rare in both pediatric and adult patients. We review the literature of respiratory orbital cysts and conclude that they tend to present in adults and should be considered in the differential diagnoses of orbital cysts.

ABSTRACT

Primary Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) represents the 2nd most common lymphoma occurring in the orbit, after Mucosal Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) lymphoma. A total of 5 cases of ocular adnexal DLBCL were diagnosed over 25 years of experience at our tertiary eye care center. Two cases involved the lacrimal sac and one case involved the lacrimal gland. In this paper we are presenting the remaining 2 non-lacrimal cases of DLBCL. The first case is a 32 year old male who was referred with a slowly growing, painless mass involving the left medial canthal area as a case of dacryocystitis. The mass was found to be extending into the orbit inferiorly with upward displacement of the left globe. The second case is a 65 year-old lady who presented with unilateral proptosis as a result of a right orbital mass extending to the orbital apex. Histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical analysis of the incisional biopsy in both cases confirmed the diagnosis of Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL).

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To raise the issue of increased use of traditional medicine while the Tertiary care hospitals are available to provide the appropriate care for each clinical condition. Eyeliner (Kohl) is an Arabic word denoting a fine powder with a texture and appearance similar to mascara. It is usually worn on the lid margins or inside the conjunctival sac by Middle and Far Eastern and in East Africans populations for different purposes like beauty or religious and as a treatment for many eye diseases. SUMMARY: We report a case of a lady who put traditional locally prepared eyeliner in her eye that resulted in severe corneal edema and faint scaring. On toxicology analysis it was discovered to contain toxic levels of Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb). CONCLUSION: Cd is a heavy toxic metal like Pb but has never been reported as a component of eyeliners. The most likely possible cause of the corneal clinical picture in our case is due to the toxic effect of Cd found in the traditional eyeliner (Kohl) used in Saudi Arabia.

ABSTRACT

Alveolar soft part sarcoma is considered as a distinct histopathological entity with rare cases reported from the orbit area. Two cases of alveolar soft part sarcomas occurring in the orbit of two patients along with their histopathologic findings are reported herewith. In both cases, the patients presented with eyelid swelling and proptosis. The diagnosis was made by incisional biopsies and histopathology. The literature is reviewed regarding occurrence of this tumor, its diagnosis and management.

ABSTRACT

A 2-year-old healthy child presented with progressive unilateral proptosis. COMPLETE WORK UP INCLUDING: general examination, detailed ophthalmic evaluation and radiological imaging were done. He underwent orbital exploration via anterior orbitotomy incision and debulking of the tumor was done. The histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of orbital ganglioneuroma. Ganglioneuroma is an unusual benign tumor of neuroplastic origin with extremely rare orbital involvement with only one prior reported case in a youth. The tumor is slow growing and non-metastasizing. Biopsy is necessary to differentiate it from the malignant neuroblastoma and excision is usually curative.
