ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to study how acid accumulation (lower plasma bicarbonate and higher anion gap [AG] and corrected anion gap [CAG]) correlates with metabolic parameters, food intake, and 24-h energy expenditure (EE). METHODS: Acid accumulation was measured in 286 healthy adults with estimated glomerular filtration rate > 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Measurements included body composition by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scan, ad libitum energy intake by a vending machine paradigm over 3 days, and 24-h EE in a whole-room indirect calorimeter. RESULTS: Lower bicarbonate, higher AG, and higher CAG were correlated with higher waist and thigh circumferences, body fat (percentage), fat mass, triglycerides, and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Acid accumulation markers were correlated with higher total energy (CAG partial r = 0.17; p = 0.02), fat (CAG partial r = 0.17; p = 0.02), protein intake (CAG partial r = 0.20; p = 0.006), and 24-h EE (CAG partial r = 0.24; p = 0.0007). A mediation analysis of CAG and total energy intake found that 24-h EE was a partial mediator (40%), but the association remained significant (ß = 0.15; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: In healthy individuals, acid accumulation was associated with an unfavorable metabolic phenotype; higher 24-h EE; and increased total energy, fat, and protein intake. Acid accumulation markers, as putative markers of higher dietary acid load (e.g., from protein), may affect energy balance physiology promoting weight gain.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We investigated how changes in 24-h respiratory exchange ratio (RER) and substrate oxidation during fasting versus an energy balance condition influence subsequent ad libitum food intake. METHODS: Forty-four healthy, weight-stable volunteers (30 male and 14 female; mean [SD], age 39.3 [11.0] years; BMI 31.7 [8.3] kg/m2) underwent 24-h energy expenditure measurements in a respiratory chamber during energy balance (50% carbohydrate, 30% fat, and 20% protein) and 24-h fasting. Immediately after each chamber stay, participants were allowed 24-h ad libitum food intake from computerized vending machines. RESULTS: Twenty-four-hour RER decreased by 9.4% (95% CI: -10.4% to -8.5%; p < 0.0001) during fasting compared to energy balance, reflecting a decrease in carbohydrate oxidation (mean [SD], -2.6 [0.8] MJ/day; p < 0.0001) and an increase in lipid oxidation (2.3 [0.9] MJ/day; p < 0.0001). Changes in 24-h RER and carbohydrate oxidation in response to fasting were correlated with the subsequent energy intake such that smaller decreases in fasting 24-h RER and carbohydrate oxidation, but not lipid oxidation, were associated with greater energy intake after fasting (r = 0.31, p = 0.04; r = 0.40, p = 0.007; and r = -0.27, p = 0.07, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Impaired metabolic flexibility to fasting, reflected by an inability to transition away from carbohydrate oxidation, is linked with increased energy intake.

ABSTRACT

We examined whether perceived stress, anhedonia, and food insecurity were associated with dietary adherence during a 6-week intervention. Sixty participants (23 m; 53 ± 14 y) completed psychosocial measures and were provided with full meals. Individuals with obesity were randomized to a weight-maintaining energy needs (WMENs) (n = 18; BMI 33 ± 4) or a 35% calorie-reduced diet (n = 19; BMI 38 ± 9); normal-weight individuals (n = 23; BMI 23 ± 2) were assigned to a WMENs diet. Adherence scores were determined via weekly assessments and daily ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) of real-time behavior in a natural environment. Perceived stress and anhedonia were associated with % body fat (all r-values > 0.25, all p-values < 0.05), but food insecurity and adherence were not. Higher perceived stress (r = -0.31, p = 0.02), anhedonia (r = -0.34, p = 0.01), and food insecurity (r = -0.27, p = 0.04) were associated with lower adherence scores, even after adjusting for age, sex, and % body fat. In all adjusted models, % body fat was not associated with adherence. Higher measures of stress, anhedonia, and food insecurity predicted lower adherence independently of body fat, indicating that psychosocial factors are important targets for successful adherence to dietary interventions, regardless of body size.

OBJECTIVE: Adipose tissue (AT) contains a bimodal population of large and small adipocytes. Changes in fat cell size (FCS) distribution and AT caloric density (kcal/g) with weight loss are unclear. We aimed to evaluate changes in FCS and AT calories in weight loss and determine associations with anthropometrics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Healthy adults (6 men/4 women; age 33 ± 11 years; BMI 35 ± 6 kg/m2) underwent DXA and subcutaneous abdominal/thigh fat biopsies, before and after 6 weeks of caloric restriction. AT calories (bomb calorimetry) and hormones (adiponectin, leptin, FGF21) were measured. RESULTS: Abdominal large cell diameter (LCD; Δ = -13.2 µm, p = 0.01) and nadir (Δ = -7.3 µm, p = 0.03) decreased. In repeated measures correlations (rrm), abdominal and thigh LCD and nadir were associated with fat mass (FM) loss (rrm = 0.68; rrm = 0.63; rrm = 0.66; rrm = 0.62, p's < 0.05, respectively) and waist circumference decrease (rrm = 0.70; rrm = 0.60, p's ≤ 0.05). Small cell percentage did not change and was not associated with FM changes. Abdominal AT calories were unchanged with weight loss. Change in leptin was associated with change in abdominal LCD (rrm = 0.77, p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Caloric restriction reduces adipocyte LCD and nadir. These changes are associated with FM loss. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The existence of seasonal changes in energy metabolism is uncertain. We investigated the relationship between the seasons and spontaneous physical activity (SPA), energy expenditure (EE), and other components measured in a respiratory chamber. METHODS: Between 1985-2005, 671 healthy adults (aged 28.8 ± 7.1 years; 403 men) in Phoenix, Arizona had a 24-hour stay in the respiratory chamber equipped with radar sensors; SPA (expressed as a percentage over the time interval), the energy cost of SPA, EE, and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) were measured. RESULTS: In models adjusted for known covariates, SPA (%) was lower during summer (7.2 ± 2.9, p = 0.0002), spring (7.5 ± 2.9, p = 0.025), and fall (7.6 ± 3, p = 0.038) compared to winter (8.3 ± 3.5, reference). Conversely, energy cost of SPA (kcal/h/%) was higher during summer (2.18 ± 0.83, p = 0.0008), spring (2.186 ± 0.83, p = 0.017), and fall (2.146 ± 0.75, p = 0.038) compared to winter (2.006 ± 0.76). Protein (292 ± 117 kcal/day, ß = -21.2, p = 0.08) oxidation rates was lower in the summer compared to winter. Carbohydrate and lipid oxidation rates (kcal/day) did not differ across seasons. RER and 24-h EE did not differ by season. CONCLUSION: SPA, representing fidgeting-like behavior in the chamber, demonstrated a winter peak and summer nadir in humans living in a desert climate. ABSTRACT

Obesity rates are increasing and affecting mental health. It is important to understand how behavioral traits such as anhedonia are associated with physiologic traits that may predict weight-change in clinical and non-clinical populations. We studied whether 24-hour energy expenditure (24hEE) changes with fasting and overfeeding are associated with anhedonia in a healthy cohort. We performed behavioral assessments (physical anhedonia scale (PAS) and inventory for depressive symptoms (IDS)) followed by measures of 24hEE and urinary catecholamines in a whole-room indirect calorimeter (respiratory chamber) during energy balance, and then randomly during fasting and 2 different overfeeding diets. Participants (n=98) were medically healthy, between 18 and 55 years of age, with normal glucose regulation and weight-stable 6 months before admission. Women were premenopausal and not pregnant. Higher PAS was significantly associated with lesser decrease in 24hEE with fasting and higher urinary catecholamine excretion rates - consistent with spendthrift metabolism. As IDS increased, the association between anhedonia and the change in 24hEE from energy balance to fasting decreased (B-values were lower for change in EE). Here, higher PAS scores may reflect the ability to respond with appropriate homeostatic reactions which balance energy needs. IDS scores blunting this response may explain how anhedonia and depression can lead to weight gain.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether interindividual variance in diet-induced metabolic flexibility is explained by differences in gut hormone concentrations. METHODS: A total of 69 healthy volunteers with normal glucose regulation underwent 24-hour assessments of respiratory quotient (RQ) in a whole-room indirect calorimeter during eucaloric feeding (EBL; 50% carbohydrate, 30% fat) and then, in a crossover design, during 24-hour fasting and three normal-protein (20%) overfeeding diets (200% energy requirements). Metabolic flexibility was defined as the change in 24-hour RQ from EBL during standard (50% carbohydrate), high-fat (60%), and high-carbohydrate (75%) overfeeding diets. Plasma concentrations of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) after an overnight fast were measured prior to and after each diet. RESULTS: Compared with EBL, on average, 24-hour RQ decreased by ~4% during high-fat overfeeding, whereas it increased by ~4% during standard overfeeding and by ~9% during high-carbohydrate overfeeding. During high-carbohydrate overfeeding, but not during any other overfeeding diet or fasting, increased GLP-1 concentration was associated with increased RQ (r = 0.44, p < 0.001), higher/lower carbohydrate/lipid oxidation rates (r = 0.34 and r = -0.51, both p < 0.01), respectively, and increased plasma insulin concentration (r = 0.38, p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Increased GLP-1 concentration following high-carbohydrate overfeeding associated with a greater shift to carbohydrate oxidation, suggesting that GLP-1 may be implicated in diet-induced metabolic flexibility to carbohydrate overload.

BACKGROUND: Molecular stable isotope ratios are a novel type of dietary biomarker with high sensitivity and specificity for certain foods. Among these, fatty acid carbon isotope ratios (CIRs) have strong potential but have not been investigated as dietary biomarkers. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether fatty acid CIRs and mass proportions were associated with meat, fish, and sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake. METHODS: Thirty-two men [aged 46.2 ± 10.5 y; BMI (kg/m2): 27.2 ± 4.0] underwent a 12-wk inpatient dietary intervention at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in Phoenix, Arizona. Men were randomly assigned to 1 of 8 dietary treatments varying the presence/absence of dietary meat, fish, and SSBs in all combinations. Fatty acid CIRs and mass proportions were measured in fasting blood samples and adipose tissue biopsies that were collected pre- and postintervention. Dietary effects were analyzed using multivariable regression and receiver operating characteristic AUCs were calculated using logistic regression. RESULTS: CIRs of the several abundant SFAs, MUFAs and arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) in plasma were strongly associated with meat, as were a subset of these fatty acids in RBCs. Effect sizes in plasma ranged from 1.01‰ to 1.93‰ and were similar but attenuated in RBCs. Mass proportions of those fatty acids were not associated with diet. CIRs of plasma dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (20:3n-6) and adipose palmitic acid (16:0) were weakly associated with SSBs. Mass proportions of plasma odd-chain fatty acids were associated with meat, and mass proportions of plasma EPA and DHA (20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3) were associated with fish. CONCLUSIONS: CIRs of plasma and RBC fatty acids show promise as sensitive and specific measures of dietary meat. These provide different information from that provided by fatty acid mass proportions, and are informative where mass proportion is not. ABSTRACT

This article proposes Persistence Administered Collective Navigation (PACNav) as an approach for achieving the decentralized collective navigation of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms. The technique is based on the flocking and collective navigation behavior observed in natural swarms, such as cattle herds, bird flocks, and even large groups of humans. As global and concurrent information of all swarm members is not available in natural swarms, these systems use local observations to achieve the desired behavior. Similarly, PACNav relies only on local observations of the relative positions of UAVs, making it suitable for large swarms deprived of communication capabilities and external localization systems. We introduce the novel concepts ofpath persistenceandpath similaritythat allow each swarm member to analyze the motion of other members in order to determine its own future motion. PACNav is based on two main principles: (a) UAVs with little variation in motion direction have highpath persistence, and are considered by other UAVs to be reliable leaders; (b) groups of UAVs that move in a similar direction have highpath similarity, and such groups are assumed to contain a reliable leader. The proposed approach also embeds a reactive collision avoidance mechanism to avoid collisions with swarm members and environmental obstacles. This collision avoidance ensures safety while reducing deviations from the assigned path. Along with several simulated experiments, we present a real-world experiment in a natural forest, showcasing the validity and effectiveness of the proposed collective navigation approach in challenging environments. The source code is released as open-source, making it possible to replicate the obtained results and facilitate the continuation of research by the community.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The transition from paediatric to adult diabetes care in youth-onset diabetes (type 1 diabetes mellitus, Y-T1DM and type 2 diabetes mellitus, Y-T2DM) is associated with worsening glycaemic control, missed clinical visits, decreased medication adherence and the emergence of cardiometabolic complications. The socio-ecological challenges that influence transitioning to adult diabetes care may be distinct between Y-T1DM and Y-T2DM. The goal of this scoping review is to map the state of the literature on transitioning care in Y-T2DM compared with Y-T1DM and to identify the main sources and types of evidence available. The objectives are : (1) to identify the factors within the socio-ecological framework (individual, relationship, community, societal) associated with transitioning to adult care in Y-T2DM compared with Y- T1DM, and (2) to identify knowledge gaps related to transitioning to adult care. METHODS: The scoping review protocol and reporting will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for scoping reviews guidelines. A systematic search of scientific databases (PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, Scopus and APA PsycNet will be undertaken for articles between 1 January 1990 and 30 September 2022. Study designs will include peer-reviewed experimental and quasi-experimental published studies without language or country-specific restrictions. We will exclude articles on other diabetes subtypes and will exclude non-peer reviewed articles such as opinion papers, anecdotal reports or supplementary commentaries. ANALYSIS: References will be collated, sorted and extracted using Covidence. Factors associated with transition from paediatric to adult diabetes care in Y-T1DM and Y-T2DM will be identified using the socio-ecological framework and results will be presented in narrative format, tables, and summary graphs. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Food insecurity is known to be associated with obesity, but its association with physiological measures is unclear. Therefore, it was hypothesized that, compared with food-secure individuals, those with food insecurity would have higher 24-hour energy expenditure (EE [kilocalories per day]) and 24-hour respiratory quotient (RQ [ratio]). Subsequently, hormones involved in appetite regulation, substrate oxidation, and EE were explored. METHODS: A total of 113 healthy participants without diabetes (75 men; mean [SD], age 40 [12] years; BMI 30 [8] kg/m2 ) were included in this analysis. Participants completed the Food Security Short Form, underwent a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scan, and spent 24 hours in a human respiratory chamber following a weight-maintaining diet. RESULTS: Compared with individuals with food security, participants with food insecurity had no difference in 24-hour EE. However, they had higher carbohydrate oxidation rates (p = 0.03) and lower lipid oxidation rates (p = 0.02), resulting in higher 24-hour RQ (p < 0.01). They also had lower fasting glucagon-like peptide 1 (p = 0.03) concentrations. CONCLUSIONS: Food insecurity is associated with higher 24-hour RQ and lower fasting glucagon-like peptide 1 concentrations, metabolic and hormonal differences previously shown to drive greater calorie intake in the setting of unrestricted food availability. These findings therefore provide new insight into the paradoxical link between restricted food access and increased adiposity.

BACKGROUND: Theory posits that macronutrient intake is regulated by protein consumption and adequate intake of protein results in consumption of less carbohydrates and fat. The current study investigates the effect of protein intake on calorie and macronutrient content using an ad libitum vending machine paradigm. METHODS: Healthy volunteers (n = 287; 177 m; Age = 36 ± 11; BMI = 32 ± 8) were admitted to our clinical research unit. Macronutrient meal content (grams) and energy intake (Kcal) were quantified by specialized food processing software and collected on an hourly basis over a three-day period using a validated ad libitum vending machine paradigm. Body composition was assessed by DXA. Lagged multi-level models accounting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, fat and fat free mass indices were fitted to examine the impact of prior macronutrient content on subsequent meals. RESULTS: Protein intake was associated with decreased energy intake (Kcal; B = -1.67 kcal, p = 0.0048), lower protein and carbohydrate intake (B = -0.08 g, p = 0.0006; B = -0.21 g, p = 0.0003, respectively) at subsequent meals. Daily Macronutrient intake and subsequent intake were positively associated. CONCLUSIONS: Dietary protein exhibits a negative regulatory effect on a short-term meal-to-meal rather than day-to-day basis. In the setting of readily available food, protein intake impacts energy intake only over very short time courses.

OBJECTIVE: Negative affect and food insecurity have been proposed to impede adherence to weight loss interventions. Therefore, this study examined the role of these variables on dietary adherence using Ecological Momentary Assessment. METHODS: A total of 50 participants (19 male participants; age = 49 [SD 14] years) participated in an outpatient dietary study. Lean participants (n = 22; BMI ≤ 25 kg/m2 ) received a weight-maintaining energy needs (WMEN) diet, and participants with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) were randomized to receive either a WMEN diet (n = 14) or a 35% calorie-reduced diet (n = 14). Food insecurity was measured, and, twice daily, Ecological Momentary Assessment captured real-time affect ratings and adherence. Between-person (trait-level) and lagged within-person (state-level) scores were calculated. RESULTS: Greater food insecurity and trait-level negative affect were associated with reduced adherence (p = 0.0015, p = 0.0002, respectively), whereas higher trait-level positive affect was associated with greater adherence (p < 0.0001). Significant interactions between affect and food insecurity revealed an association between higher trait positive affect and increased adherence at lower levels of food insecurity. Higher trait negative affect was more strongly associated with decreased adherence in participants with greater levels of food insecurity (-1 SD: B = -0.21, p = 0.22; mean: B = -0.46, SE = 0.13, p = 0.0004; +1 SD: B = -0.71, SE = 0.17, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Trait-level affect may be crucial in predicting dietary adherence, especially in those with greater food insecurity.

ABSTRACT

A novel approach for achieving fast evasion in self-localized swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) threatened by an intruding moving object is presented in this paper. Motivated by natural self-organizing systems, the presented approach of fast and collective evasion enables the UAV swarm to avoid dynamic objects (interferers) that are actively approaching the group. The main objective of the proposed technique is the fast and safe escape of the swarm from an interferer discovered in proximity. This method is inspired by the collective behavior of groups of certain animals, such as schools of fish or flocks of birds. These animals use the limited information of their sensing organs and decentralized control to achieve reliable and effective group motion. The system presented in this paper is intended to execute the safe coordination of UAV swarms with a large number of agents. Similar to natural swarms, this system propagates a fast shock of information about detected interferers throughout the group to achieve dynamic and collective evasion. The proposed system is fully decentralized using only onboard sensors to mutually localize swarm agents and interferers, similar to how animals accomplish this behavior. As a result, the communication structure between swarm agents is not overwhelmed by information about the state (position and velocity) of each individual and it is reliable to communication dropouts. The proposed system and theory were numerically evaluated and verified in real-world experiments.

ABSTRACT

This article presents a unique framework for deploying decentralized and infrastructure-independent swarms of homogeneous aerial vehicles in the real world without explicit communication. This is a requirement in swarm research, which anticipates that global knowledge and communication will not scale well with the number of robots. The system architecture proposed in this article employs the UVDAR technique to directly perceive the local neighborhood for direct mutual localization of swarm members. The technique allows for decentralization and high scalability of swarm systems, such as can be observed in fish schools, bird flocks, or cattle herds. The bio-inspired swarming model that has been developed is suited for real-world deployment of large particle groups in outdoor and indoor environments with obstacles. The collective behavior of the model emerges from a set of local rules based on direct observation of the neighborhood using onboard sensors only. The model is scalable, requires only local perception of agents and the environment, and requires no communication among the agents. Apart from simulated scenarios, the performance and usability of the entire framework is analyzed in several real-world experiments with a fully-decentralized swarm of UAV deployed in outdoor conditions. To the best of our knowledge, these experiments are the first deployment of decentralized bio-inspired compact swarms of UAV without the use of a communication network or shared absolute localization. ABSTRACT

Knowledge of evolutionary influences on patterns of human mating, social interactions, and differential health is increasing, yet these insights have rarely been applied to historical analyses of human population dynamics. The genetic and evolutionary forces behind biases in interethnic mating and in the health of individuals of different ethnic groups in Latin America and the Caribbean since the European colonization of America are still largely ignored. We discuss how historical and contemporary sociocultural interactions and practices are strongly influenced by population-level evolutionary forces. Specifically, we discuss the historical implications of functional (de facto) polygyny, sex-biased admixture, and assortative mating in Latin America. We propose that these three evolutionary mechanisms influenced mating patterns, shaping the genetic and cultural landscape across Latin America and the Caribbean. Further, we discuss how genetic differences between the original populations that migrated at different times into Latin America contributed to their accommodation to and survival in the different local ecologies and interethnic interactions. Relevant medical and social implications follow from the genetic and cultural changes reviewed.

ABSTRACT

Leukocyte telomere length, a marker of immune system function, is sensitive to exposures such as psychosocial stressors and health-maintaining behaviors. Past research has determined that stress experienced in adulthood is associated with shorter telomere length, but is limited to mostly cross-sectional reports. We test whether repeated reports of chronic psychosocial and financial burden is associated with telomere length change over a 5-year period (years 15 and 20) from 969 participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study, a longitudinal, population-based cohort, ages 18-30 at time of recruitment in 1985. We further examine whether multisystem resiliency, comprised of social connections, health-maintaining behaviors, and psychological resources, mitigates the effects of repeated burden on telomere attrition over 5 years. Our results indicate that adults with high chronic burden do not show decreased telomere length over the 5-year period. However, these effects do vary by level of resiliency, as regression results revealed a significant interaction between chronic burden and multisystem resiliency. For individuals with high repeated chronic burden and low multisystem resiliency (1 SD below the mean), there was a significant 5-year shortening in telomere length, whereas no significant relationships between chronic burden and attrition were evident for those at moderate and higher levels of resiliency. These effects apply similarly across the three components of resiliency. Results imply that interventions should focus on establishing strong social connections, psychological resources, and health-maintaining behaviors when attempting to ameliorate stress-related decline in telomere length among at-risk individuals.

ABSTRACT

Financial strain is a prevalent form of psychosocial stress in the United States; however, information about the relationship between financial strain and cardiovascular health remains sparse, particularly in older women. METHODS: The cross-sectional association between financial strain and ideal cardiovascular health were examined in the Women's Health Study follow-up cohort (N = 22,048; mean age = 72±â€¯6.0 years).Six self-reported measures of financial strain were summed together to create a financial strain index and categorized into 4 groups: No financial strain, 1 stressor, 2 stressors, and 3+ stressors. Ideal cardiovascular health was based on the American Heart Association strategic 2020 goals metric, including tobacco use, body mass index, physical activity, diet, blood pressure, total cholesterol and diabetes mellitus. Cardiovascular health was examined as continuous and a categorical outcome (ideal, intermediate, and poor). Statistical analyses adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, education and income. RESULTS: At least one indicator of financial strain was reported by 16% of participants. Number of financial stressors was associated with lower ideal cardiovascular health, and this association persisted after adjustment for potential confounders (1 financial stressor (FS): B = -0.10, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) = -0.13, -0.07; 2 FS: B = -0.20, 95% CI = -0.26, -0.15; 3+ FS: B = -0.44, 95% CI = -0.50, -0.38). CONCLUSION: Financial strain was associated with lower ideal cardiovascular health in middle aged and older female health professional women. The results of this study have implications for the potential cardiovascular health benefit of financial protections for older individuals.

ABSTRACT

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Short sleep duration is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, it is uncertain whether sleep debt, a measure of sleep deficiency during the week compared to the weekend, confers increased cardiovascular risk. Because sleep disturbances increase with age particularly in women, we examined the relationship between sleep debt and ideal cardiovascular health (ICH) in older women. METHODS: Sleep debt is defined as the difference between self-reported total weekday and weekend sleep hours of at least 2 hours among women without apparent CVD and cancer participating in the Women's Health Stress Study follow-up cohort of female health professionals (N = 22 082). The ICH consisted of seven health factors and behaviors as defined by the American Heart Association Strategic 2020 goals including body mass index, smoking, physical activity, diet, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and glucose. RESULTS: Mean age was 72.1 ± 6.0 years. Compared to women with no sleep debt, women with sleep debt were more likely to be obese and have hypertension (pall < .05). Linear regression models adjusted for age and race/ethnicity revealed that sleep debt was significantly associated with poorer ICH (B = -0.13 [95% CI = -0.18 to -0.08]). The relationship was attenuated but remained significant after adjustment for education, income, depression/anxiety, cumulative stress, and snoring. CONCLUSION: Sleep debt was associated with poorer ICH, despite taking into account socioeconomic status and psychosocial factors. These results suggest that weekly sleep duration variation, possibly leading to circadian misalignment, may be associated with cardiovascular risk in older women.
