ABSTRACT

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY After the surgical treatment of injuries of the lower extremities or osteotomies, patients are frequently asked to partially load the affected leg during the first weeks of rehabilitation. The patient's compliance to the prescribed weight bearing limit and their ability to regain a physiological gait as soon as possible are necessary for a fast rehabilitation without complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS/RESULTS To support patients during this important phase of recovery, we developed a feedback and analysis system that is able to provide feedback concerning loading and roll over behavior to the patient. The system is based on sensor insoles to measure the amount of pressure and pressure distribution and on a smartphone application to provide realtime visual and acoustic feedback. CONCLUSIONS This newly developed device has the potential to monitor the rehabilitation phase and assist patients with lower leg injuries therefore decrease the complication rate and enable faster rehabilitation. Key words: lower limb fracture osteotomy around the knee, partial weight bearing, realtime feedback, smartphone application.

ABSTRACT

An analysis of fatal drug overdoses in the population of the Crimean Republic between 1993-2017 was conducted. The epidemiological characteristics of these drug overdoses were determined. Deaths from drug overdoses occurs mainly in male population during the most active years of drug use (21-30 years). The most frequent cause of death is opioid drug overdose and combined alcohol-opioid intoxication.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study is the evaluation of the influence of surfactant replacement therapy on the life-span of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in fatal cases. It has been determined, that in patients, were died from ARDS, exogenous surfactant therapy increases life-span from the moment of establishing of diagnosis of syndrome to fatal outcome. The initial functional state of lungs does not influence on life-span of patients with ARDS, but administration of exogenous surfactant is the important predictor of its increase.

ABSTRACT

We use direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations for a two-phase flow (water and air) to study the dynamics of the modulational instability of free surface waves and its contribution to the interaction between the ocean and atmosphere. If the steepness of the initial wave exceeds a threshold value, we observe wave-breaking events and the formation of large-scale dipole structures in the air. Because of the multiple steepening and breaking of the waves under unstable wave packets, a train of dipoles is released in the atmosphere; those dipoles propagate at a height comparable with the wavelength. The amount of energy dissipated by the breaker in water and air is considered, and contrary to expectations, we observe that the energy dissipation in air is greater than that in water. The possible consequences on the wave modeling and on the exchange of aerosols and gases between air and water are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Studies of climate change typically consider measurements or predictions of temperature over extended periods of time. Climate, however, is much more than temperature. Over the oceans, changes in wind speed and the surface gravity waves generated by such winds play an important role. We used a 23-year database of calibrated and validated satellite altimeter measurements to investigate global changes in oceanic wind speed and wave height over this period. We find a general global trend of increasing values of wind speed and, to a lesser degree, wave height, over this period. The rate of increase is greater for extreme events as compared to the mean condition.

ABSTRACT

The paper presents a general characteristic of the organization of teaching of medicine to foreign students at the Crimean State Medical University. The Crimea State Medical University is a state higher educational establishment having the 4th highest level of state accreditation. The University prepares junior specialists and bachelors in specialties such as nursing, orthopedic dentistry, pharmacy and doctors in general medicine, dentistry and clinical pharmacy. At present there are 1,500 foreign students from 34 countries studying at the university, with more than half are students from Malaysia. The quality of education at CSMU is evaluated by the State accreditation commission an authorized central executive power in the field of education and science. Textbooks and manuals written in English, which have passed expert evaluation at a state level and approved by the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine, was given permission to be used by all medical schools of the country.

ABSTRACT

In 54 patients, operated on the colon, the indexes of nutritive status - body mass index, the shoulder circumference, the circulating albumin level and the leukocytes count - were estimated on the third and the tenth postoperative day. On the third day after the operation the lowering of these indexes was noted in the patients. Postoperative disorders of nutrition after colonic interventions have multifactorial mechanism of pathogenesis and need complex approach for their correction.

ABSTRACT

The article is devoted to actulal problem of endocrinology and surgery-treatment of severe diseases of the thyroid gland. Results of plasmapheresis application in complex preoperative preparation in 90 patients, aged from 20 to 60 yrs, in severe course of the disease, were adduced. After plasmapheresis preparation conduction the reduction of the autoimmune processes in the patients organisms, the antibodies titer lowering were noted, witnessing the stable remission achievement. Plasmapheresis application in complex of treatment of patients with autoimmune thyroiditis and diffuse toxic goiter causes significant positive influence on hormonal and immune state.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Allergic reactions to natural rubber latex have increased during the past 10 years, especially in many health care workers (HCWs) who have high exposure to latex allergens. The prevalence of skin test reactions to natural rubber latex in Russia, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and eastern Europe is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of skin test reactivity to natural rubber latex in a population of HCWs exposed to latex. METHODS: Nine hundred one HCWs regularly exposed to latex were evaluated using an allergy history questionnaire. Subjects were tested for latex allergy by titrated skin prick test with a biologically standardized latex extract. The diagnosis of latex allergy was defined by the presence of clinical symptoms when exposed to latex along with a positive skin prick test to latex. RESULTS: Forty-nine (5.4%) HCWs were skin test-positive to latex. Seventeen (1.9%) HCWs were classified as latex-allergic based upon positive skin tests to latex associated with allergy symptoms with exposure. Seven of 901 HCWs had experienced anaphylactic reactions to latex. The most frequently reported symptom related to latex exposure was contact urticaria. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of latex allergy among HCWs in Russia, the CIS, and adjacent eastern European countries is considerably less than reported in HCWs exposed to latex in western Europe and the United States. The low prevalence of latex allergy in Russia and the CIS suggests that lessened exposure to natural latex powdered gloves may diminish the prevalence of latex sensitization in HCWs in Russia and the CIS.

ABSTRACT

An analysis of the 20-years experience with treatment of inguinal hernias is presented. Patients with "light" forms of inguinal hernias and with a good condition of the posterior wall, inconsiderable widening of the deep opening of the inguinal canal can be successfully treated by Martynov's and Girard's methods. In complicated forms of the inguinal hernia it is necessary to strengthen the posterior wall of the inguinal canal, in cases with big recurrent and repeatedly recurring hernias it must be completely reconstructed, often with the help of alloplasty. A method of alloplasty of the inguinal canal is proposed for complicated forms of inguinal hernias. Operations were made on 62 patients, recurrent hernias were noted in 2 patients (3.4%). Another method of operations is proposed used in men of young and middle age excluding traumas of elements of the spermatic cord. Operations were performed on 111 patients, recurrences were noted in 2 of them (2%).

ABSTRACT

An experimental model of acute and chronic ethanol poisoning is described. Electrocardiographic and morphologic changes in the hearts of white rats, exposed to alcoholic intoxication, have been assessed. Typical ECG features as well as muscle-cell and neuron ultrastructure have been identified, so that they could be used for morphologic and functional assessment of alcoholic poisoning.
