ABSTRACT
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability manifested before the age of 2 1/2 years (Wing, 1974). Autistic children exhibit language retardation with impaired comprehension. To maximize effective communication with these children, nurses must know how they communicate and be aware of natural, but detrimental, responses to their behaviors.
