ABSTRACT

Nanoalloys and nanocomposites are widely studied classes of nanomaterials within the context of biological systems. They are of immense interest because of the possibility of tuning the optical, magnetic, electronic and chemical properties through particle composition and internal architecture. In principle these properties can therefore be optimized for application in biological detections such as of DNA sequences, bacteria, viruses, antibodies, antigens, and cancer cells. This article presents an overview of methods currently used for nanoalloy and nanocomposite synthesis and characterisation, focusing on Au-Ag and FexOy@Au structures as primary components in detection platforms for plasmonic and magnetically enabled plasmonic bio-sensing.

ABSTRACT

High-quality carbon nanoparticles with controlled viscosity and high aqueous stability were prepared by liquid-phase laser ablation of a graphite target in deionized water. The size distribution was found to vary from 5nm to 50nm with mean size of 18nm, in the absence of any reducing chemical reagents. Efficient generation of short chain polyynes was recorded for high laser repetition rates. Homogeneous and stable nanoparticle suspensions with viscosities ranging from 0.89 to 12mPa.s were obtained by suspending the nanoparticles in different solvent mixtures such as glycerol-water and isopropanol-water. Optical properties were investigated by absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy confirmed graphitic-like structure of nanoparticles and the surface chemistry was revealed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrating sufficient electrostatic stabilization to avoid particle coagulation or flocculation. This paper present an exciting alternative method to engineer carbon nanoparticles and their potential use as a ligand-free nano-ink for ink jet printing (jetting) applications.

ABSTRACT

A picosecond laser ablation approach has been developed for the synthesis of ligand-free AuAg bimetallic NPs where the relative amount of Ag is controlled in situ through a laser shielding effect. Various measurements, such as optical spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, revealed the generation of homogenous 15 nm average size bimetallic NPs with different compositions and tunable localized surface plasmon resonance. Furthermore, ligand-free metallic nanoparticles with respect to chemically synthesized nanoparticles display outstanding properties, i.e. featureless Raman background spectrum, which is a basic requirement in many plasmonic applications such as Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy. Various molecules were chemisorbed on the nanoparticle and SERS investigations were carried out, by varying the laser wavelength. The SERS enhancement factor for AuAg bimetallic NPs shows an enhancement factor of about 5.7 × 10(5) with respect to the flat AuAg surface.

ABSTRACT

The synthesis of analogues of the anti-tumour drug 2-[N-(hydroxymethyl)methylamino]-4,6-bis(dimethylamino)-1,3,5-triazine (HMPMM) in which the OH or a dimethylamino group is replaced by a carbohydrate has been explored. Triazinyl beta-glycosides were readily prepared by reaction of sugars with trimethyl-triazinylammonium salts. These were made with one or two methylamino groups on the triazine for reaction with formaldehyde to give the cytotoxic NMeCH2OH group. However, reaction of the triazinyl glycosides with formaldehyde gave complex intractable mixtures. When the carbohydrate portion was changed to the fully protected 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl glucose a good yield of the 2-[N-(hydroxymethyl)methylamino]-4-(dimethylamino)-1,3,5-triazin-2 -yl tetra-O-acetyl beta-glucoside was obtained. However, de-acetylation using sodium methoxide also removed the N-CH2OH group. We are investigating protection of the base-sensitive N-CH2OH group as trialkylsilyl and benzyl ethers and are looking at de-acetylation methods that are more selective. We have prepared glycosides in which the sugar is joined through the oxygen of the NMeCH2OH group. Coupling of acetobromoglucose with HMPMM catalysed by silver salts was not successful. Although methyl and cyclohexyl derivatives of HMPMM may be produced in high yields by reaction of HMPMM with methyl and cyclohexyl alcohols under acidic catalysis, production of glycosides in this way gave poor yields. MNDO calculations on reactions of HMPMM helped us devise improved reaction conditions for the condensation of 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl glucose with HMPMM and its derivatives. The best procedure to generate one of the target glycosides is to react 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl glucose and formaldehyde with 2-methylamino-4,6-bis(dimethylamino)-1,3,5-triazine. The beta-glycoside product was de-acetylated using potassium carbonate in dry methanol.
