ABSTRACT

New ternary and quaternary nitride halides, Ba(2)N(X,X') (X = F, Cl, Br; X' = Br, I), have been synthesized from the high temperature reactions of barium subnitride with the respective barium halides under an inert atmosphere. The former include the first fully characterized barium nitride halides for X other than F, and the latter are the first examples of barium nitride mixed halides. The variation in structure with composition has been investigated by powder X-ray and powder neutron diffraction techniques. The heavier ternary and quaternary nitride halides (X, X' = Cl, Br, I) crystallize in the hexagonal space group R3m, with the anti-α-NaFeO(2) structure. Ba(2)NF forms with both an anti-α-NaFeO(2) structure, in which N(3-) and F(-) are ordered and an anion-disordered simple rock salt structure. The hexagonal polymorph of Ba(2)NF is the only example to date of a nitride fluoride adopting this layered structure. Both the ternary and the quaternary compounds display very weak, temperature independent paramagnetism.

ABSTRACT

Adenovirus is a common cause of morbidity and mortality after hemopoietic stem cell transplantation in children. Recently the incidence, risk factors, and outcome of such infections have been better defined using improved virologic detection methods, in particular polymerase chain reaction. We have introduced intensive virologic surveillance for adenovirus in our institution including at least weekly polymerase chain reaction testing of blood and stool samples. We report on 71 prospectively monitored transplants, including 40 from unrelated donors. In total, there were 8 cases of invasive adenovirus infection, 3 of whom died. Mortality was less than in previous studies as cases were managed with antiviral chemotherapy and reduction of immune suppression. In fatal cases, there was concurrent difficult graft versus host disease making withdrawal of immune suppression therapy impossible. We describe 2 cases of graft failure in association with adenovirus viremia and its treatment that were successfully managed with further donor cell infusion.

ABSTRACT

The ligands 1,4-bis(2-pyridylmethylsulfanylmethyl)benzene (L1) and 2,5-bis(2-pyridylmethylsulfanylmethyl)pyrazine (L2) were treated with Cd(NO3)2.4H2O in metal-to-ligand ratios of 1:1 and 2:1, respectively; L2 was also treated with CdCl2.2.5H2O in a 2:1 ratio. All products were found to be coordination polymers. The crystal structures of {[Cd(L1)(NO3)2].CH2Cl2}infinity (1a), {[Cd(L1)(NO3)2].4/3CH3CN}infinity (1b), {[Cd2(L2)(NO3)4].2CH3CN}infinity (2.2CH3CN), and {[Cd2(L2)Cl4].2CH2Cl2}infinity (3.2CH2Cl2) were determined. Compounds 1a and 1b were found to be conformational supramolecular isomers. The structure of 1b displayed topological isomerism with two isomeric polymer chains, 1b(1) and 1b(2), in the one crystal forming a single supramolecular array. The structure of 2.2CH(3)CN showed Cd2(L2) units linked together by nitrates bridging between the Cd(II) centers in a mode previously not seen in Cd(II) compounds. The overall structure of 3.2CH2Cl2 was found to be similar to that of 2.2CH3CN despite the presence of different anions and solvent molecules. Powder X-ray diffraction was used to investigate the nature of bulk preparations of compounds 1-3.

ABSTRACT

The meso-disubstituted dipyrrolide ligand (L) has promoted the formation of a unique tetranuclear iron(II) compound that contains both diazaferrocenyl and distorted-tetrahedral iron centres.
