ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to summarize evidence relating to the impact of experiential education on the development of professional identity formation (PIF) and determine areas for future research and development to improve the integration of a professional identity within the student's unique personal identity within experiential education programs. METHODS: A systematic scoping review was conducted using the systematic evidence-based approach following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Articles published between 2012 and 2022 related to the development of PIF in relation to the experiential experience were researched using PubMed, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Eric, and JSTOR (search engines) to find relevant articles. RESULTS: A total of 986 articles were identified from the literature search. After undergoing an exclusion criterion, the total number of articles was reduced to 23 to be included in this review. Following the full-text review of the 23 articles, the authors identified common themes or domains and key findings relating to PIF and pharmacy experiential education. Articles were then assigned to 1 or more of the following domains: Experiential Education and PIF, Experiential Education and Professional Socialization, and Factors that influence PIF. CONCLUSION: This review found that professional identity is highly impacted by experiential education and that pharmacy students cannot rely on didactic teaching alone but need to be exposed to authentic practice settings early within their curriculum by means of experiential education.

ABSTRACT

Solvated electrons in water have long been of interest to chemists. While readily produced using intense multiphoton excitation of water and/or irradiation with high-energy particles, the possible role of solvated electrons in electrochemical and photoelectrochemical reactions at electrodes has been controversial. Recent studies showed that excitation of electrons to the conduction band of diamond leads to barrier-free emission of electrons into water. While these electrons can be inferred from the reactions they induce, direct detection by transient absorption measurements provides more direct evidence. Here, we present studies demonstrating direct detection of solvated electrons produced at diamond electrode surfaces and the influence of electrochemical potential and solution-phase electron scavengers. We further present a more detailed analysis of experimental conditions needed to detect solvated electrons emitted from diamond and other solid materials through transient optical absorption measurements.

ABSTRACT

Silver nanoparticles embedded into the diamond thin films enhance the optical absorption and the photocatalytic activity toward the solvated electron-initiated reduction of N2 to NH3 in water. Here, we demonstrate the formation of diamond films with embedded Ag nanoparticles <100 nm in diameter. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dependent SEM, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis demonstrate the formation of encapsulated nanoparticles. Optical absorption measurements in the visible and ultraviolet region show that the resulting films exhibit plasmonic resonances in the visible and near-ultraviolet region. Measurements of photocatalytic activity using supraband gap (λ < 225 nm) and sub-band gap (λ > 225 nm) excitation show significantly enhanced ability to convert N2 to NH3. Incorporation of Ag nanoparticles induces a nearly 5-fold increase in activity using a sub-band gap excitation with λ > 225 nm. Our results suggest that internal photoemission, in which electrons are excited from Ag into diamond's conduction band, is an important process that extends the wavelength region beyond diamond's band gap. Other factors, including Ag-induced optical scattering and formation of graphitic impurities are also discussed.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Using the Delphi process, a panel of experienced preceptors achieved consensus on best practices to increase preceptor efficiency and effectiveness. METHODS: The Delphi panelists completed 3 survey rounds and a face-to-face meeting. Survey questions covered several topics, including preparation of students for rotations, preceptor efficiency and effectiveness, potential resident contributions to precepting, methods of developing critical-thinking skills and providing assessment and feedback, precepting time metrics, and barriers to preceptor effectiveness. Panel consensus was defined as agreement of ≥80%. RESULTS: Fifteen of 36 invited preceptors (42%) completed all 3 survey rounds. The expert panel reached consensus on 6 essentials for effective rotations, 8 precepting contributions that could be made by appropriately trained residents, precepting barriers, 4 strategies for teaching critical thinking, and 5 valuable characteristics of the One Minute Preceptor model. Panelists reported on time spent with students presenting new patient cases (median, 10 minutes per case), time devoted to assessment of students' clinical performance (median, 22 minutes per student weekly), and time dedicated to student professional development (median, 20 minutes per student weekly). CONCLUSION: Important strategies for preceptors identified by the panel included (1) a thorough orientation to logistics, expectations, and scheduling of activities, (2) using appropriately trained residents in student training, (3) providing opportunities for critical thinking and therapeutic decision-making, (4) giving frequent, quality feedback on clinical activities, and (5) giving feedback to learners on a regular basis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To review the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, efficacy and safety, dosage administration, and adverse effects of tofacitinib for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment. DATA SOURCES: Primary sources of information were obtained from clinical studies, which were identified through PubMed (1966 to June 2013) and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (1970 to March 2013) using terms: tofacitinib, tasocitinib, CP-690550, and CP-690,550. Information was used from tofacitinib package insert, guidelines, and published abstracts from the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the European League Against Rheumatism. STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: Data search was limited to include publications in English language and from human subjects. DATA SYNTHESIS: Tofacitinib is the first oral Janus kinase inhibitor indicated for treatment of moderate to severe RA. Tofacitinib demonstrated efficacy and safety comparable to other disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Tofacitinib was efficacious in RA patients, indicated by achievements of ACR20, ACR50, and ACR70 criteria. Similar improvements were observed in patients who met remission criteria based on the Disease Activity Scores 28 criteria and quality of life as measured by the Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI). Tofacitinib was associated with infections and malignancies; and elevations in serum creatinine and lipids were observed. Drug interactions with inducers and inhibitors of the cytochrome P-450 3A4 and 2C9 isoenzymes were reported. CONCLUSIONS: Tofacitinib is an oral treatment option for RA patients who have inadequate response or intolerance to methotrexate. Postmarket surveillance will provide further insight to tofacitinib's role in RA therapy, especially in patients who may require different types of combination therapy with DMARDS.
