ABSTRACT

To detect allergic bronchial asthma to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and its frequency in a group of asthmatics, a study was carried out in 800 asthmatic patients and 345 healthy subjects from seven different areas of the country. We considered only allergic bronchial asthma to Dermatophagoides pt. without taking into consideration other allergens. Patients with chronic bronchopathy were not included in the study. The average frequency of disease in the group investigated was of 32 per cent. Considering the high frequency of this form of allergic bronchial asthma, specialists should grant a special attention to the early detection and treatment of this disease.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of mould genera and their association with the house dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) were investigated in the homes of 192 asthmatic patients and 125 healthy people in a Romanian town with a relatively high degree of humidity. The dominant moulds which developed in the culture media exposed on the bedroom floors were Cladosporium, Penicillium and Aspergillus. Living Dermatophagoides pt. and their eggs were present mostly in the colonies of Cladosporium; in those of Penicillium the house dust mites were dead and disintegrated. It is concluded that allergy to Dermatophagoides pt. must not be connected to house dust as such but to the presence in the dust of certain mould spores.

ABSTRACT

The present paper reports on 7 cases of primary infections, pyelonephritis and pyelocystitis, in which acrids were found in the urine during acute attacks. The cases were detected in the clinical laboratory of a county Hospital. All the 7 patients, ranging in age from 6 to 60 years, exhibited characteristic symptoms of pyelonephritis and pyelocystitis. Numerous acarids were found in the urinary sediment and, in some cases, also their eggs. Some of the acarids were motile, others were encrusted with salts. A female acarid was detected while laying eggs. In 6 patients the acardis were found in the urine only at the first examination and disappeared following the of urinary infection; in the seventh case they were detected at three consecutive examinations performed at 3--6 days interval.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of bronchial asthma was investigated in a population of 4,486 schoolchildren aged 6 to 14 years from Rîmnicu Vîlcea, a Romanian town in the meridional sub-Carpathian zone of the country. The incidence of "probable asthma" was found to be 2.45% and that of confirmed asthma 1.62%. These percentages are among the highest ever encountered in Romania, in both children and adults. A family history of atopy was observed in 42.3% of the children and of asthma in 28.7%. Such big figures have never been found in adults in Romania.

ABSTRACT

Precipitating antibodies against different organic enviromental dusts were studied in 37 patients with suggestive symptoms of nonatopic bronchial asthma, comparatively with a group of 4 patients with atopic asthma and with a group of asymptomatic subjects, exposed to the same organic dusts as the majority of patients. Precipitins were found present in over 75% of the sera from patients with infectious type non-atopic asthma and were associated with positive semidelayed type skin tests as well as with positive bronchial provocation tests a few hours after antigen inhalation. No precipitins were found in the sera from patients with atopic asthma. Precipitating antibodies were also found but in lower percentages (30%) and at lower titers, in clinically asymptomatic subjects who were occupationally exposed to the respective antigens. It was demonstrated that the presence of precipitins in the sera of patients with bronchial asthma is a valuable diagnostic element which confirms the clinical and anamnestic data. The pathogenic role of precipitins is not yet clear. It might be related to the amount of these precipitins in the serum.
